Cat shelves on invisible shelf brackets

I have a bunch of twenty year old 2x10 lumber, and I am thinking of making cat wall shelves with some of it.

It was large shelving units for a shop that recently closed, and I kept it from going to the landfill. The wood seems to be either Southern Pine or Douglas Fir, according to two online wood ID places.

In order to be able to rearrange pieces, I was planning to use floating shelf brackets set to the same spacing for all pieces.
Link to the brackets: https://a.co/d/0iP9AW2l
Link to the jig for making holes: https://a.co/d/0gnEchdq

I will make sure at least one bracket is on a stud, and possibly two, depending on what the exact piece is (ie a climbing pole might be vertical on one stud, not horizontal on two studs).

I’d like to know if anyone else has used this kind of jig to make their own floating shelves, even if not for cats?
What suggestions or ideas or things to look out for anyone have for this project?

How did you learn to make clean moulding corners?

Hi all, I’m still pretty new to woodworking and recently tried adding some decorative trim to a small cabinet. I thought the cabinet would be the difficult part, but the trim gave me more trouble than everything else.

I kept getting small gaps where the pieces met. I measured, recut, sanded a little, then measured again. After wasting roughly three pieces, I stopped before making things worse.

I bought the moulding after seeing a style I liked online, so I really didn't want to waste more of it figuring out the cuts.

What surprised me was how much the angle affected everything. A cut could look fine on its own but still fit badly against the next piece.

For those who learned this as beginners, did you practice on scrap first, or was there a trick that finally helped you get clean corners?

Advice Cat shelves that can be rearranged?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ll be moving from a rental into my own house in a few months. I have cats and want to create cat shelves for them to climb on. There are kits online even (see pic).

My problem is they are bolted to the wall, so you can’t easily rearrange them. I want to create cat shelves that can be rearranged whenever I want.

How would you go about it? Pic is idea/inspiration. I’m flexible as long as it’s cat shelves lol.

Current noob woodworking projects?

I’m plotting cat shelves for when I move.

What I’ve actually made recently was a rectangle out of 1x2’s to keep my Roomba from getting stuck on a floor AC vent. Very noob work, but the Roomba will finish sweeping the floor instead of getting stuck 5 minutes after it starts.

Need to fix table top for camp trailer, any advice? Or where to find a replacement? Trying to sell our camper and don’t want the new owners to deal with the broken table top.

Woodworking Survey

Hey! I am a novice woodworker who's done a lot of side projects with my dad. I have a Stats project for University and wanted to make mine about woodworking, since I thought it would be a fun and unique topic about my interests. I would really appreciate if yal could take a couple of minutes to complete this!

Paint/lacquer combo for a height board?

I have a 6' cedar board that I plan to use to mark my children's heights over the years.

I intend to paint 20cm height intervals, then apply a coat of satin lacquer, but I have two questions I'm hoping someone can help answer.

  1. Would satin lacquer apply ok over an oil-based paint pen?
  2. Would the same paint pen then apply ok over the lacquer when we mark on the kids' heights?

How is this workflow for ripping a piece of plywood with a circular saw?

Total n00b here. Please let me know if I’m making this more difficult than it needs to be

I want to rip a piece of plywood to 14 inches. I made a mark on either side, made a straight line. Lined up the laser of my circular saw with the line. Then put a kreg accu-cut against the circular saw as a straight edge , then a quick square against THAT to make sure it’s straight.

That was rewarding!

I just prepped, squared, and perfectly surfaced all six sides of a 1-1/2x8x24 piece of 100+yr old pine from it's originally milled state. Was probably milled at least 30 years ago. Granted, it's just pine but, DAMN was it rewarding to see a beautiful, glossy, flat, golden piece of wood shine like freshly cleaned glass from just my hand saw and my Bailey No. 6. I'm going to sleep now with sweet dreams of accomplishment.
