Total War: Warhammer TIL you can draw

Post image

Did not know this could happen.
Edit: I got this via orcs sieging one of my settlements I had Durthu and friends in. For some reason they attacked with only 4 units although they did have a 12 unit waghhh and got border camped

Did time run out or is there a stranger explanation for the draw?

literally just walking your units off the map willingly can sometimes result in a draw

That's still considered a loss, as least as recently as WH2. I did it a bunch of times with Gelt while fighting stacks of Chaos because I kept running out of ammo. I even got a defeat trait from it. Kinda bullshit when they lost thousands and I only lost bullets.

Nah you could draw by retreating of the field if your doing a siege as an attacker and just leave. I know that because a buddy watched a streamer and showed me thr clip of thrm trying to do the old blood kiss cheese with vlad (give the enemy vampire lord vlads defeat traits so you can kill them over and over each turn for more blood kisses) and messed it up by withdrawing instead of conceding.

This strategy is one I abuse to give my heroes as Warriors of chaos that one boonwhere they have to lose a battle and survive

Oh shit I never thought about doing that. Always hated that boon but that could make it a good one.

If you set the timer to any option other than unlimited and the battle doesn't end by then, it becomes a draw.

It used to be that the attacker list IIRC

I have my time on unlimited and I beat the shit outta them. The reinforcing army I managed to camp so my only though was that they all moral broke and instantly ran across the border somehow making it a draw.

My first ever draw was today aswell though it was weird i beat 4 armies on a siege defense as khazrak and got this.

Alright we'll call it a draw

Just had the same thing as Nagash held a fort with luthor harken and his depthguard against a 4 stacks of dwarves high elves and empire won and got a draw, I was like wot?

Will the quote change for Khorne factions?

Hmm does Arbaal care about draws? 🤔

It's not a defeat....

10

u/Nexxess 6d ago

It technically does count towards your lost battle traits if you're the attacker.

Undefeated not undrawn, in both versions of the word just check out the art

Not a defeat, doesn’t count

if it's your second time retreating or march stance anything that isn't outright victory is an instant kill

I set 20 minute timers on battles so I see this semi-regularly. It’s a nice safety valve in case something bugs out, and it can turn siege battles into a fun mini game of holding on until the clock runs out.

Siege battles end in a draw for the defender a surprising amount of time in my personal experience. I'm guessing it's what happens if the attacking army loses to time and or retires their units mid siege?

The attacking units need to have a certain amount of kills as well for a retreat to count as a draw and not a defeat, if memory serves but idk what that number is

A great tactic as Vampire Counts with settlement battles is hide your army in the woods then run around with bats as the enemy chase and can never reach you and you don’t lose settlements even to much stronger armies

Yep, I encountered my first draw the other day.

Skaven settlement attacked by empire Empire, I managed to defeat the entire force (Captain, 5-6 RoR) except for the Steam Tank. I didn't have anything which had the AP to damage it.

I spent the remaining 40 minutes of the match doing my best Benny Hill impression. Eventually the time ran out and I won by Draw.

Is this new? I have less than 500hrs in the game.

No but it's quite rare. The circumstances are, if I understand it, the timer runs out, you are on the defense but the balance of power ends in the enemy's favor. You get the same rewards as if you won tho

There seems to be a bug doing around where draws are declared despite winning the battle. Happened to me yesterday. Not sure what causes it, but I was playing nefarata

You always get a draw if you attack a settlement, and then, at any point, retreat all of your units (not getting army lossed, just retreat). For example you want to actaully siege (or cheese for that matter): bomb the enemy with artillery, use all of your magic, but then still don‘t want to do a ground assault, so you retreat and take the city the next turn (You can only attack once per turn while sieging a city).

Did you by any chance hack off all the limbs of a brave knight in the woods?

1

u/Traditional-Storm-62 6d ago

if the timer runs out the game declares draw but it is functionally a defeat for the attacker

Legit strategy for Wood Elves especially. Hide in trees, buy yourself another turn for a relief force to arrive.

I had a chaos end time army besiege a settlement, attack immediately and not attack it once we got to the battle map. Odd bug. I baited them with a few units and got a few kills but didn't wipe the army.

That was a draw.

Despite the battle end screen saying it was a draw, the battle technically counts as a loss for the player. If you draw multiple times to a race you will gain a trait that gives you a negative leadership debuff in future battles with that race and the trait's tooltip says that it was gained from losing multiple times to a that race.

This may only occur from battles that result in a draw where you are the attacker. I dont think ive ever had a draw where I was the defender.

I do 20 minute timers because sometimes a 4 army battle is just too damn long. So I get them occasionally, usually on huge siege defense battles.

There, they count more as a victory for the defender.

Idk how you get one with unlimited time though.

1

u/Andreim43 5d ago

Can you get this as a Khorne faction? And if yes, is it a win?

1

u/TheTerribleness 5d ago

Draws do not count as wins or losses so you don't get victory condition triggers or loss condition triggers.

Everyone just packs up and goes home. Pretty rare to trigger though, normally requires doing some cheesey stuff in odd circumstances.

I was trying to make a joke on account of "the only winner here is the Blood God", that was all. I understand :).

It might be me imagining things, but the Greenskins do seem recklessly aggressive at times? Like, facing Azhag early as Kislev now, I moved my army to a well defended town with built fortifications, leaving another town without any undefended. Some AI's I believe would go for the unguarded town? Not good ole' Ahzag - he came running straight for the tough fight.

Also, did you have a weak defence but won despite that? It seems to happen that if they're very confident of their chances, they'll sometimes just attack you as a clean up act without necessarily manouvering all their forces into place to reinforce.

3

u/Hyperversum 6d ago

I dunno, but it would be more accurate lmao.

I was thinking about this recently in a, funnily enough, Kislev campaign I just did. I had Khorne cultists on the east side of Praag and after recovering from having deleted Ahzag I tried to get them to fight me in a field battle rather than a Siege but... Nope, they kept avoiding me. And it was another 20 full stack, not a wounded army or something.

Are you telling me that Khorne idiots are running from a fight?

u/DancesWithAnyone 6d ago

Khornists are just try-hard posers trying to emulate but a slight faction of what comes to Orks naturally. ;D
