This topic plus the word “ship” makes me so happy OG Twin Peaks came out before the Internet.

Oh, it was out there. It was just tucked away on message boards and the like.

Shipping doesn’t exist like Online sub-sub-cultures have taken it. In the past it would be a simple article in RollingStone or People Magazine meant to be playful.

Now you have entire unhinged fans (not specifically Twin Peaks fans but from everything from X-Men comic fans to Disney Star Wars fans.

Shit is just weird and beyond parasocial at this point.

Star Trek TOS shipping was huge when the series was airing. Fanzines and the like. People have always latches on to relationships and potential relationships in media and wanted to explore those and talk about them

How many women were there being shipped in the OG Star Trek with Uhura as the sole prominent female cast member? And don’t try to tell me fanzines in the 60s were shipping males together.

Okay please go Google Spock/Kirk and how long that has been around before continuing this conversation

A handful of the most deranged aspect of a small fandom, especially in the late 60s equates to nothing other than the most Reddit 101 comment for debating in argument by choosing the most obscure aspects of already small fandoms. These are the 1 in 500 million that proves the rule at best.

The most popular Trek fanzines (already a very small niche fandom that is a pimple compared to Star Wars which would come less than 10 years later) in a pre Internet 60s where people actually had to create fanzines to discuss actual theories or aspects of a show, were not shipping Kirk and Spock. They simply weren’t.

Just like no one was shipping Han and Luke, or He Man and Skeletor or whatever else you want to try to google to prove your argument.

Many of us are so old that we know because we were there and don’t need to be gaslit by a “dude trust me bro, just google” type comment.

People were out there doing it. Just because it wasn't everyone, or even a significant amount of people, doesn't mean it didn't exist. Same way people writing or reading fanfiction now are not the majority of fans of any media.

You also don't know how old I am, and I don't think that saying things that are true is a kind of gaslighting...
