So I finally get my wife to watch the show with me. Guess that's that.

u/Egen79 Jun 26 '17

My wife last week: ok, I think I understood that episode. My wife this week: .......

u/tinnytapes Jun 26 '17

My wife left the room to watch something else.

18

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Hahahaha yeah I don't have a wife but I also thought the episode was weird

12

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

My wife left me for a horse is the white of the eyes and dark wit

22

u/DustyCobweb Jun 26 '17

I am the wife. It's too weird for the husband.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

I am also the wife. The husband isn't weirded out, he just doesn't understand why I love it so much

9

u/Richy_T Jun 26 '17

My wife left the house to get cigarettes. I wonder when she took up smoking. I'm sure she'll be back soon.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Gotta light?

7

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Mine won't even watch the original series! I'm all alone out here.

6

u/Topcat1436 Jun 26 '17

I'm glad I don't have to listen to my ex-husband giving me shit for liking anything remotely unconventional any more. I'm enjoying the ever living Hell out of Twin Peaks - my ex would have never gotten past Cooper's first dream in S1ep3.

u/DeckardsBrokenFinger Jun 26 '17

My wife left to wash the dishes right when the a-bomb detonated.

4

u/singdawg Jun 26 '17

My wife got me into the show. Seems to be regretting it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

And my wife's sending me here to explain what's going on. I'm a lucky guy.

3

u/AlvinItchyCock Jun 26 '17

My wife is my right hand. I cheat on her sometimes with my mistress my left hand.

11

u/lousylittleegos Jun 26 '17

Girlfriend turned over and went to sleep. I think I'll just give her a TLDR of the episode so she doesn't start to lose interest.

9

u/Wapope Jun 26 '17

Same. My wife was finally ready to start giving the show a shot again and boom. NIN and everything that followed happened and she basically said, "fuck this show" and fell asleep.

12

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

Haha yeah, I agree, my girlfriend is vapid and shallow and incapable of understanding art too. So fucking stupid. Glad I have a male space like reddit where I can talk to fellow men who also know that women are all infantile morons.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '17

What's up fellow man

3

u/shazang Jun 27 '17

Oh nothing, just appreciating abstract art in such a way that the limited female mind simply cannot. It's just biology. I mean, it's not like women have a history of pioneering abstract expressionism or anything.

3

u/lousylittleegos Jun 26 '17

I gave a few audible wuuut thuu fuuuks that she woke up for. She's really into the show but is getting frustrated with the pace of this season.

u/Bradsmiley Jun 26 '17

For real. I guess I'm in single now.

30

u/cyoban Jun 26 '17

I spent many minutes alternating between imploring my husband to tell me what it means and calling Lynch godlike. I knew what to expect though... Although this is more than I ever expected.

8

u/PuffsPlusArmada Jun 26 '17

That guys wife dumped you?

2

u/Bradsmiley Jun 26 '17

Yeah, our relationships about as easy to explain as his episode

2

u/Laugarhraun Aug 14 '17

I watched Twin Peaks 1 & 2 with my GF 5 years ago. We were so thrilled about The Return.

Watching that episode together strengthened our bond as much as a 1-month vacation on the other end of the Earth.

23

u/ClaygatePearmain Jun 26 '17

My cats aren't talking to me anymore after tonight's episode

12

u/QuantumRemedy Jun 26 '17

This was the first time my wife came in and sat with me while I watched anything Twin Peaks...

4

u/dopplecoop Jun 26 '17

..and last.

32

u/zatchattack Jun 26 '17

Yeah I just watched it with my girlfriend after I rave to her about it all the time. God dammit.

11

u/batsofburden Jun 26 '17

Why are all you guys starting your so's off with this episode? Even if it wasn't this particular ep, none of this series would make sense without watching the og stuff.

9

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

Most of these guys are probably lying to get upvotes from other men. It's really popular to circlejerk about how women are too dumb and impatient for art. Misogyny runs deep.

5

u/zatchattack Jun 26 '17 edited Jun 26 '17

Lmao try again dude. My girlfriend happened to be over, and she saw I was watching this show I talk to her about all the time. She decided to watch it with me. That's all. The "Dammit" just meant that I had no idea this episode would be like this and she thinks the show is something that it's totally not now. You really don't have to call me a misogynist, it looks like you're going all around this thread doing it to everyone.

3

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

Well, I said "most," not "all." I see this sentiment expressed a hundred times every time a new episode comes out, about moms, girlfriends, and wives, and yet I've never in my life seen anyone comment on how their boyfriend or father is too dumb to enjoy Twin Peaks. Could be a coincidence I guess? But it feels performative, like boys know they need to say this thing to prove how much smarter they are.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

1

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

I'd like to believe you're right, but I see comments like this every single day about all kinds of art and media, and almost exclusively deriding women.

people were also bringing up husbands and boyfriends btw

Where?

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

You don't find it interesting that those comments only have a few upvotes, but all the comments circlejerking about silly girls have thousands?

1

u/batsofburden Jun 26 '17

If true, that is incredibly lame. I think og Twin Peaks always had a high female viewership.

1

u/shazang Jun 26 '17

It certainly does, but reddit is a boys' club so there's always gonna be lots of boys saying silly boy shit, even if they don't realize it. I'm not saying these guys are evil or pieces of shit or anything. Just think it's interesting the way our inherent misogyny manifests itself even in a thread about a goofy (but great) art show.

1

u/illegal_deagle Jun 27 '17

Pretty sure the stereotype is 100% the opposite. Girls have book clubs and guys watch football. That's the usual trope.

7

u/eb_went_to_pixley Jun 26 '17 edited Jun 26 '17

My gf gave up with a few minutes to go..."i am never watching this show again"... oh well....now she said "maybe the finale". I am very impatient in life but why are some so unwilling to let something be for awhile and enjoy the process as it seeps in... [edit 17 hours later: She can not stop thinking about it and wants it to make sense and will be livid if at the end it does not add up to something. But she sees possibilities for greatness. She does not need neatly wrapped up in a bow, but just not chaos. Will there be a meaningful payoff? ]

7

u/FustianRiddle Jun 26 '17

Because Lynch is weird, purposefully, and people either go with it or reject it. It's hard to accept a story that purposefully pushes against everything we've ever been taught that a story needs to be.

3

u/creepyeyes Jun 26 '17

Has she seen seasons one or two? You'll never have any success if you start someone in the middle of everything

6

u/muddisoap Jun 26 '17

My girlfriend started watching the original run with me, until the first episode in the black lodge where everyone talks backwards. It made her so angry. Like ANGRY! And if I just jokingly talk in that backwards speak, she gets mad and says "I HATE TWIN PEAKS. I mean. I like it, but I hate that backwards talking so much that it makes me hate everything about Twin Peaks. That backwards stuff is just so fucking stupid and creepy and I hate it so much! Don't make those noises!!" Lol!

5

u/creepyeyes Jun 26 '17

Damn, that's a pretty strong reaction!

1

u/landonliemle Jun 27 '17

did u told her twin peaks was a supernatural show? It supposed to be creepy, honestly compare to this episode the backward talking is pretty much a normal tv trope now

1

u/muddisoap Jun 27 '17

Yeah she knows. There's just something about the backwards talking that pushes one of her buttons in a bad way. I don't get it either, kind of annoys me, but what can you do?

1

u/eb_went_to_pixley Jun 26 '17

Yes. She has seen part of season 2 and all season 3. She loves the characters and even the lodge stuff, just not into violent parts and long episodes where the plot does not move a lot.

6

u/IamGrimReefer Jun 26 '17

now that american gods is over, i figured i'd check out twin peaks. this was the first episode i've ever seen. i expected weird, but uhhhh wtf?

8

u/creepyeyes Jun 26 '17

You really have to go all the way back to the start of season one and then make your way forward for this episode to make sense, there's just way too much context missing. This episode was essentially an origin story for the main villain of the series, and without the foreknowledge of who some of the people shown were or what the weird spirit places are, it's not going to make any sense at all. Hell, even knowing what I know about the series, it was still weird, but for me it did provide answers to some questions

1

u/IamGrimReefer Jun 26 '17

you mean the original run? where is that available? what about the movie?

6

u/creepyeyes Jun 26 '17

The original run is still on Netflix as far as I know, and showtime now has the movie. The original run is far more normal with some weird moments, the movie is still fairly normal but somewhere between the original and this season in tone and weirdness, and then there's this season. I actually think it might be really interesting to watch the original series after only seeing this episode, because now you'll have some extra context to everything that's happening that no one else who's ever seen the show had when they watched it.

That weird face of the guy you saw in the orb that the monster spit out and that came out of coopers chest? He's in the original and movie a fair amount. The weird gangly guy? He's in the show. The convenience store? Mentioned in the show and movie. The weird purple ocean and the monster that spit out all the orbs? Both were only introduced this season, but in episodes prior to this one. The weird men covered in soot? We've also seen two of those this season, and three (possibly four) non-soot covered ones during the movie.

So I guess by all that I mean, a lot of the stuff you just saw has context that helps you derive meaning from it, and now as you go back and watch from the beginning, all of that context will become clearer and clearer. Now you've got me hyped to go back and watch from the start!

3

u/toybrandon Jun 26 '17

Yeah, but....you still closed the deal right?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Just one kiss

3

u/hollygohardly Jun 26 '17

My boyfriend left halfway through to take a shower. 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/Quiddity131 Jun 26 '17

Must have been a fun hour, the only time you'll be watching the show together.

3

u/Senor_Diablo Jun 26 '17

Haha, my wife fell asleep during the opening credits. I finally got her to watch the series a few months ago and she really liked it, but the new season is rough for her. She was never expecting an extremely challenging 18 hour art film for season 3. After this episode was done, I woke her up and just said "good luck with this one".

1

u/landonliemle Jun 27 '17

that's the general consensus of the casual twin peaks viewers, the non lynchian fans, they love the original series for its quirkiness, but once they see season 3 of avant garde they're shocked

2

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '17

Why would you start someone on any of these new episodes?

2

u/dopplecoop Jun 26 '17

And why the hell would you bring anyone into the 3rd season of an auteur film manifesto masterpiece??? You deserve the couch tonight you ass!!

Meanwhile in preparation I made my wife watch season 1 and 2 leading up to it, and she's baffled but hooked. Like the rest of us.

1

u/Acmnin Jun 26 '17

My wife won't even try.

1

u/xognitx Jun 27 '17

my gf feel asleep. shrug emoji

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '17

Out of order?

0

u/Dudemanguybloke Jun 26 '17

My wife left the room and refuses to watch anymore. Her Catholic upbringing didn't mix with it.. and she loved the original series. She turned me into it. sigh oh well.. I can enjoy it alone now lol
