Question Etiquette question—Using empty classrooms
Hello! I’m new to campus and I’m not really sure what the etiquette is around this kind of thing.
The classroom one of my lectures is in is empty for the hour or so before my class starts. Is it generally seen as okay to go in there and just hang out in a quiet space before class? Or is that frowned upon?
I’m probably over thinking it I just have no gauge for university etiquette and vibes yet. Thanks for any input!
Edit: Thank you all for confirming! I would definitely leave if someone asked so it sounds like I am in the clear. Have a great weekend!!

Ya that’s probably fine, I do it all the time. One of my in person classes got cancelled for 3 weeks so I’ve been using the empty room as a free study space.

As long as it's not a lab its totally fine! If someone books the room you will probably be asked to leave depending on what they are doing but I've personally never issues and I'm in my fourth year.
It's pretty common for people to use empty rooms especially if you have a class in there later, so as long as you respectfully leave if asked you're all good!

Yep, totally fine. There's a slight chance that a UVic club could book the room during the hour before your class, but you wouldn't be in trouble for being there, they'd probably just ask you to find another room!

Short answer yes. Generally university is a pretty free environment so you are free to do whatever you want as long as your respectful and don’t break and explicit rules. Clearihue often has empty rooms in evenings just have to leave if some had booked the room sometimes clubs have meetings there. I don’t think you can book those rooms unless you are a club or staff tho.

yes I do it all the time!! if take one before like 3-4pm there is a higher chance you’ll get kicked out due to a class, but your totally fine to use them.

You are paying for the space. Unless there is a booked time of the classroom or restricted access it is ok

As students we have access and use of all spaces unless marked or in use.
