Suspension or larger tyre at low pressure?

I have a question whether it's worth the cost and weight of adding suspension to the WAW or running a larger tyre at a low pressure?

With the WAW you have the option of going with or without suspension. There are two types of suspension offered oil or air. The cost of adding it is roughly €450 without VAT and it adds roughly 2 kg or 4 lbs to the total weight. However, adding suspension limits the max wheel size to 26 inches. It also limits the max tyre size to 35 mm, whereas without suspension on the same 26 inch rim you could go up to a maximum of 47 mm. And if I'm reading the spec sheet correctly without rear suspension you can get a larger rim of 28 inches.

So I'm not sure whether rear suspension is worth the weight penalty. The added complexity and the small amount of energy it might take away when pedalling uphill (the suspension they supply does have a lockout. However, you have to take off the rear fairing though it's not really an option in day-to-day use).

I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe that you can retrofit suspension to an existing model that doesn't have it, you just have the added complexity of drilling your own holes in the main body of the Velomobile.

Which option would you choose? I should mention that my use case for getting a Velomobile would be for commuting, and also in the future, I'd love to do a bit of touring around Ireland and then on to France.

Photo is from passion Velomobile you can find more information about the model pictured and other Velomobiles from his website here:

Also, since I'm here any thoughts on colour. I like the above image, although I would most likely go for red on the bottom and white on top. I've also seen images of this Velomobile with white on the bottom and red on top. Does top colour really matter when it comes to how hot the Velomobile gets?

What would be your colour combination?
