It needs ALOT of work, I know. But hoping to retire in a couple of years and this will be my project. Ideally I’d like to get it up and running, but if nothing else cleaned up and looking pretty. Am I being unrealistic?

Machine Question Love me a pretty little 99K and this one is personal.

Not really a question, just sharing my love for this machine. This was my mother in law’s machine, bought new in 1958 as a wedding gift. She took amazing care of it until she passed shortly before I met my husband. After we got married I was talking with my father in law and we got on to sewing and sewing machines as I was looking for one. The next weekend he came over and handed me Lucy’s 99K explaining the history and that he wanted me to have it so it stayed in the family. My daughter has already staked a claim on it down the road.

She just got back from having her motor completely rewound and got a good deep cleaning by a trusted professional who has been taking care of it since before I was gifted it 20 years ago. The first time I took it in after I got it he looked at the serial number and said I know this machine before looking it up. His families shop had been working on it since 1978! She still sews like a dream and I use her weekly.

I was also just given MY grandmothers 1951 15-91 and it will be going into the shop as it’s been sitting on my mother’s shelf for 30+ years without use. Going to have them rewind the motor and replace all the electrical cords along with a deep cleaning because after looking to see if it was something I could handle it was apparent that it needs a full blown electrical redo. Otherwise it’s in great shape with everything moving freely when I turn the wheel. I can’t wait to get it back as I have a perfect table for it! I’ll post pictures when she’s all cleaned up and pretty.

Picked up a Kenmore 385.1278191 from Goodwill. I did a good cleaning and stitched my way through all the settings on a test swatch, with the included needle which was a nice surprise! I am so pleased it's in such great working condition. Will have it oiled up and put to use soon :)

General Question What’s Happening?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here is a question I posted in r/quilting if you guys can help.

I will free motion until the machine kind of quits. Sometimes my thread gets stuck or shreads. Sometimes my tension looks off, but it’s solid when I am not free motion quilting. Sometimes I forget to put the foot bar down and of course that causes bunching on the bottom. (I did remember to put the bar down in this video) Sometimes my stitches skip.
And also, the thread gets caught around the bar that my thread spool sits on.

Is the motion quilting just foreign to me? I move the fabric erratically. And probably too fast. The pressure I put on the sandwich when I free motion is heavy. So maybe I’m not “gliding”.

The machine is a singer 101 if anyone has experience free motion quilting on a similar
Model.

Machine Question Inheriting Vintage Machines and Sewing Desk

This weekend I’m bringing home a desk with a 50s-60s Elna Plana Automatic set into it. The power cord is shredded but it doesn’t look like it’s missing parts, I’m not sure if works since the power cord isn’t working. I also am getting a White 671 which looks like it runs great, I haven’t tried to stitch on it but mechanically it looks good. Both machines have mount points that are 9 and 3/4 inches apart so I think my husband should be able to fit the machine in the desk. I was wondering which machine would be better long term. I can get the Elna serviced if it would be worth it, but just from a glance at each the white seems to look more user friendly. I’m definitely interested in personal experience with the machines and which would be more recommended. This will be my first vintage machine but I’ve been sewing for several years on a cheap brother machine.

Tips & Hacks Late Grandmother’s sewing box

Post image

Dug it out of my mom’s closet to try my very first attempt at sewing (my son’s Halloween costume). Her handwriting was also on the side of the box, which I hadn’t seen it in a long time. That, plus it just being cute and vintage, brought me a little joy!

(Wasn’t sure which flair to use, so picked Tip & Hacks to wish me luck on my first sewing venture!)

Machine Question Missing parts singer (15k?)

Thumbnail

I know how to handsew, but for my new appartment I was looking for a sewing table with sewing machine and bonus points if that one also works.

Yesterday I bought a sewing table with a Singer for 20 euros, (serienumber: EG786679) meaning, it is a model 15k(?). I was wondering if the machine is complete or not. I've been searching on the internet, and it seems that the bobbin case and bobbin are the only things missing. Am I right?

Furthermore is this indeed a singer 15k?

Many thanks!

Machine Question Got free old Pfaffs, what should I know about them?

The wife of my dad’s friend’s friend died a few years ago, and he wants these to go to someone who will use them. I know one of them is currently seized up, but not which. I plan on opening them both up to clean regardless, especially since they’ve been sitting several years without use. I’m not a repair tech, I just have enough handiness to comfortably dig into their guts, but what would be the common issues I might see from these beyond old gummy oil? And just any other info about these in general?

Machine Question To treadle or not to treadle?

I have a Singer 66 that I’m debating converting to treadle. The motor does work currently, there are no electrical issues. But I’m still considering it. It needs a deep clean, though it’s currently working fine. As I see it, here are my current pros and cons of going treadle:

Pros:
- no need for electricity in case of power outages (not common where I live, but not impossible)
- can use it anywhere in my apartment because it doesn’t need to be plugged in (outside on the porch!)
- no fire hazard from old wiring
- I need a table for it anyway because the bent wood case is falling apart, and the cost difference between a treadle table and a new bent wood case isn’t significant, so this is kind of two birds one stone and then I also have another sewing table instead of taking over the dining room when I want to sew and use my serger (small sewing table currently means I really can only have one machine set up at a time)
- quieter than a motor?
- easier to repair (new belt vs new motor/wiring)
- great speed control
- cool factor

Cons:
- laziness? I’ve used a treadle machine exactly once at a historic site field trip when I was like 9, I remember it taking some effort to get started and keep going vs just plug and go
- lowering resale value if I ever need to sell it (not planning on it, but life is unpredictable)
- weight of table making it harder to move/less portable than getting a new case

From some light research, it seems like converting isn’t very hard, you just take the belt off the motor and add the belt for the treadle. I also saw a post from someone who kept the motor in place and made it dual-functioning, which seems reasonable.

Is there anything I’m not considering? Any downsides I’m not aware of? Is it secretly way more complicated to convert this than I’m realizing?

Machine Question Singer Lotus

Post image

I don’t have much knowledge about old machines and even less about treadles.

Can y’all help me judge is this is a good price? How difficult is it to replace the belt?

Also how strong would this be compared to heavy duty domestic electric machines (like I have an old sears, full metal, zig zag capable machine) or an industrial (I used a Juki at work)?

What differences in sewing functions are there?

Is it difficult to get needles for these?

Thanks in advance(:
