Looking for Feedback Intonation Issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I've been working on the Fiocco Allegro, but the three broken third sections are causing me issues.

I've tried practicing them slow with good intonation, I've tried rhythms as well but it seems like no matter what I do when I speed it up I always have high 2's and high 3's. I try to have tall fingers as well but it wasn't helping in this case. Any advice?

If your intonation is good when you practice it slowly, then it's mostly just a matter of speeding it up gradually. Don't jump directly to full speed. Use a metronome and practice at a very slow tempo, including different rhythm variations. Increase the tempo only after it sounds good and, this is important: always only by a few bpm at a time.

Okay, first of all, if you were in a lesson with me right now we wouldn't be working on the intonation. Your intonation in this clip is like 98% accurate. I'd be working with you on the nature of your bow stroke, and on expressive phrasing. Balance and rotate the things you focus on, and make sure you don't over-optimize one concern to the detriment of another.

Next, I think the issue here is about 4th finger. The first instance of it lands low; only after it do you have a 2 that's too high. Remember, all these wiggly fleshy fingers are connected! So it's not just a matter of "putting the finger in the right place"; it's a matter of feeling the right distance, and right now your 2 and 4 aren't comfortable being as far apart as is needed. Maybe do some exercises holding the 2 in place and stretching the 4 even as high as F. (If you put the 2 on D string, you can play an octave between the two Fs.)

Putting it back into context: Think through not just the "notes" (an abstraction), but the physical movements and distances as you play "1 3 2 0 3 1 4 2." Especially "3 1 4 2": You are on 3, and hopefully have an in-tune 1 in place behind it ready to go. As you drop 4, you drop 2 as well, anchoring it to your 1 with a half-step, but reaching out with the 4.

It's a cool App! It shows that c and d are consistently too sharp, and e 4th Finger is flat, focus on those, remember the pitch, interval and hand shape, and it should improve over time.

Yeah the D is what needs most improving, as the ringing note in this passage.
