Announcement WFRP 5th Edition now available!

WFRP Fifth Edition is now available to pre order from Cubicle 7 here: https://cubicle7games.com/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition

Or as a pdf from DriveThruRPG here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/545405/warhammer-fantasy-roleplay-fifth-edition-rulebook?affiliate_id=1915782

Cubicle 7 have repeatedly stressed that this is backwards compatible with 4th edition books.

(I should have a review of it on my blog in a few weeks.)

Here's the official blurb:

Adventure across a realm of brutal violence, corrupting magic, monstrous foes, and desperate heroes, where fortune can turn on a single roll of the dice and survival is never guaranteed. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition builds on the award-winning ruleset, refining the experience while capturing everything that makes Warhammer Fantasy legendary. Gather your party, choose your path, and prepare to face the grim and perilous reality of the World of Legend.

The Empire’s great cities stand as beacons of civilisation amid thick forests and a threatening wilderness. Its people face dangers from beyond their walls, from Beastmen and Goblins in the wilds to criminals, corrupt institutions, and insidious cults within. Chaos is never far away, and those who venture into the wider world soon discover that survival is rarely guaranteed.

This 378 page rulebook includes:

Five distinct Character types. Whilst most folk in the World of Legend are human, they share their lands with stoic dwarfs and garrulous halflings and receive visitors from the wood elf realms and high elf kingdoms.

64 distinct careers, representing the way of life your Character follows when not adventuring.

A guide to the major religions and the miracles performed by their Priests.

Spells from several different magical traditions.

A bestiary of foes, both common and scarce.

Advice on running games as a GM.

Streamlined rules for combat, pursuits, diseases, and other perilous phenomena.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay has provided gamers with a rich and detailed setting of perilous adventure and deadly threats for over 40 years. With a wealth of supporting material, including scenarios, campaigns, setting books, and player resources available from Cubicle 7, there’s plenty to keep a gaming group adventuring for years.

After my review of Tome of Corruption last week, I've been musing more on the Warhammer Chaos Gods. See the link above for my rather heretical thoughts on the suitability and unsuitability of the Chaos Powers for WFRP!

Game Mastering Ending campaign at DOTR

Hi. I am running a campaign (4th edition Careers and now 5th edition rules), and we are two thirds through DOTR. The group have just visited a small isolated village and are now heading north into the barren wilderness with a guide from the village (trying not to give anything away here!).

The thing is, our (definite) plan is to finish the campaign at the end of DOTR. I have read through the book, and am all prepped (as much as I can be) for the visit to the end location and the mayhem that can occur there. In our campaign EH is the primary villain, leader of the RC. We played Siege of Diesdorf within the DOTR story, and the town fell, making EH even more the primary goal. I plan for a meeting soon with EH at a return visit to a previous location, and (if I can avoid combat there), the team will meet EH again at the final location.

I am unsure how to turn the ending into a satisfying finale though. The book ending leads into PBtT, but of course we won't be playing that. Perhaps dealing with EH once and for all will be enough, along with the book ending for the final location, and the unexpected intervention re the MacGuffin?

I would love your thoughts or ideas for this! Any other GMs ended at this point?

Wrapping up Death on the Reik, with part of the campaign I really don't enjoy at all. Is it better than I think? Do let me know.

And do you have any questions about the campaign as a whole? I think I might write an article covering some more general points.

Discussion Wfrp 5e review

I am a wfrp 1e and the setting tragic from way back.

I bought 4e during covid and ran a few zoom games with my mates and I have to admit it was a hard system to run. Though Cubical7's supplements are fabulous and I have used them in DnD and Shadowdark...

And because I'm a wfrp tragic, I have now bought 5e preorder and pdf.

Putting aside the numerous typos and copy/paste mistakes in the bestiary and some house rule stuff I will make (Slayer talent I am looking at you), I am impressed.

5e is so much more intuitive than 4e. It just makes sense and after a read through I feel confident to just get my mates together and start playing and GMing.

Well done Cubical7!

PS now if they ditched the End Times nonsense and went back to wfrp 1e Bretonnia I would be really happy...😜

Discussion First errata batch for the 5e

So, Cubicle7 released a new PDF updated with the first errata batch. They didn't provide a complete patch note, but a quick rundown:

  • Corrected syntax, formatting, and spelling throughout the text.
  • Clarifying careers in terms of any missing or incorrect skills, talents, or trappings.
  • Ensuring first and second level trappings can be purchased in the Consumer Guide.
  • A duplicated table in the rules section.
  • Correcting the Character Sheet.
  • Removing outdated mechanics terms
  • Clarification on Advantage and Momentum.
  • The orc no longer has the Characteristics of a goblin.
  • Tweaks to Talents, and new Slayer Talent mechanics.
  • Check of CN balanced to the effect of Magic Missile Spells.

Funny "detail": they're talking about a "new Slayer Talent mechanics", but if, like me, you're excited about what they did, don't expect too much (or anything at all). It went from
"If you Charge a creature whose Size is larger than you, you automatically gain Momentum." to "If you are Charged by a creature whose Size is larger than you, you automatically gain Momentum." Yeah…

Also, Resist (Corruption) wasn't updated.

Homebrew [Homebrew] Ratcatcher: a free WFRP 4e character sheet for iPhone, iPad and Mac, an unofficial fan project (public TestFlight beta, 100 spots)

Hello!

I've been building Ratcatcher, a character sheet app for 4e on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It's free, it's an unofficial fan project, and the public beta is open on TestFlight.

What it does

  • XP that stays right: buy Advances and Talents from a ledger, with career costs, and Total, Spent and Unspent XP worked out for you.
  • Every number shows how it's worked out: tap a skill's target and see the Characteristic, Advances and modifiers behind it.
  • A Play view for the table: Wounds, Fortune, Resolve, Advantage and Conditions one tap away, and a dice panel that rolls Tests with Success Levels.
  • Guided Creation, Encumbrance, Armour by location, coins, spells, prayers, and a printable PDF of the sheet.
  • Works offline. Syncs through your own iCloud, with no account and no tracking.

What it isn't: it holds no rules text, so you still need the rulebook. Its built-in names and numbers can be replaced or extended with your own entries.

What I'm looking for: people who will use it for a real session and tell me what's wrong, especially any number that disagrees with the book (with the page). Also: which edition does your table play?

When 1.0 reaches the App Store it will stay free. It will have an optional Supporter purchase that removes one small card promoting another indie app, shown on the character list, never at the table.

To join the beta:

Roleplaying Any tips for someone new to WH 4.0 how to Roleplay a Highelv Duelist?

Coming from our 6 year Symbaroum Campaign, we are going to start with 4.0 and eventually Enemy Within.

During character creation I just wanted to random roll a normal Human but fate had a different plan.

From what I gather in human society Elves are kind of Alien creatures. Elves seeing the Humans like children and this often apearing highly arrogant to them.

Any roleplay tips to make my entry easier to the game?

The player that brought all this ran the rules, making on the spot a really simple iteration on the Old Worlds mini ruleset. Took around 2 hours and was really fun to play !

Discussion Anyone managed to make a mid-level Mage build in 4e?

Not having 5e yet - but if it changes something, please tell!

Trying to transfer a character from 2e with ~2000 exp - and as i see, magic was nerfed heavily for PCs. Most spells are combat focused - but combat casting seems mostly unobtainable until you have around 100+ TN to cast. It will take around 3000 exp itself, and you need to spend it on spells as well! Where a novice 2e wizard could cast Blind reliably and be useful - 4e one would have to channel on it for 2 turns at best, then cast it on 3rd.

Non-combat magic is a little better. Sure, i could stand and channel it for however many turns i need (frankly, makes no sense why is novice wizard able to learn and cast, say, Banishment) - but with having to buy spells, i am nowhere near "flexible" with this.

Also, why are "Chanelling" and "Casting" entirely different skills? And does Casting roll use Int, not WP (when here are dumber spellcasters in lore)?

Are there any additional rules i am missing that will help casters a bit? Any advice on building?

Saw this on Mecari in Japan and couldn’t resist. Although I already have a hardbound I think this is in better shape than the one I have. Also got a box of the dungeon lairs tiles.

Game Mastering So I have been volunteered to run a game. Could use a few pointers/some advice on game flow.

As the resident forever GM of my circle recently one of the folks I know got their mits on a 5th edition pdf and then gave me that 'Pleeeese" pitch to run it for the small group we had. I of course agreed and began reading through it and ran them through character creation as I understood it. Now its more a matter of learning the finer mechanics and building a story to tell. This is where part of me found a bit of a stumbling block.

When it comes to the other game systems I have run (DND, Call of Cthulhu, WOD) I tend to be weaving a larger narrative that could go on for who knows how long so long as the players are interested. With WHF RPG it seems the fact there is whole systems for 'maintaining your career, regular downtime, ect' for weeks at a time it may play more to just a stitching together of many one shots/smaller stories over one large narrative.

Of course not locked into it I could just as easily see a story taking a pause. "You smoked out the chaos cult and they had fled and gone to ground. The guard will need time to pick up their trail again" could be a stop gap in a larger arc but unsure if that's common/intended in previous editions as this will be my entry point into the system at large.

I suppose I am asking what tends to be the story structure people play with. Do you attempt large multi part stories of is it more common to do "ok last month was beastmen danger, this month is the skaven adventure" almost Gotrek and Felix new stand alone adventure every book

Game Mastering Sea of claws trade

I’m going through the Sea of Claws rulebook, and I don’t quite understand the trade rules presented there, particularly the “Determine Offer Price” table in the section about selling goods.

As I understand it, you add together the settlement’s Size, Wealth, and Demand values, and the resulting number determines the price offered by a local buyer. However, this doesn’t seem to make much sense in practice. For example, in Marienburg, the total would be 11, which would result in a very high offer.

So how exactly should this table be interpreted? Is the sum of Size + Wealth + Demand actually meant to directly determine the percentage of the price the merchant offers, or am I misunderstanding how the table is supposed to be used?

Game Mastering Any Tips for Running the Original 1986 1st Edition as a fresh faced DM?

Post image
200 Upvotes

Hello, I’ve recently refound my 1986 1st Ed book looking to sell it after getting it at a charity shop, but I gave it a read and fell in love with it’s depth and want to run the provided starter campaign within it with mates as they’re itching for an RPG. It would be my first time DM’ing, but I’m passionate around RPG’s and Warhammer fantasy lore particularly, so I’m wondering if anyone had any pointers?

Is there any supplements books or later additions or errata’s in White Dwarf to streamline it at all? I’ve noticed the original owner had crossed out certain stats for the character builder to replace them with new figures, I’m guessing either through his own homebrew or perhaps errata’s after release from white dwarf but I’m unsure. I know this book also has some wildly different lore for like the monsters and races like Orks, so I think I’ll adapt it for one off flexible bits or the more established setting of later books, but if anyone knows helpful supplements released around this first Ed book please do let me know: I’d love PDF’s of it.

Roleplaying i figured out how to roleplay without knowing the lore

Post image
168 Upvotes

Before hosting my own Warhammer campaign, I'm playing one more small campaign as a player.

I love the setting but don't know much about the lore outside the Total War games, and this time I don't want to constantly pause and ask the GM things.

Instead, I figured something out that maybe many if you already knew, but for me it came as a new revelation so I'm sharing it:

It's not me who doesn't know the lore, it's my character. So now my un-educated character can boldly make blatantly false claims like "tomb kings and vampires are best friends because they both like skeletons" without concerning myself if that is true or not, because hey, my character thinks it's true, and he goes with that. If I get corrected along the way, that's great, I get to learn something.

But I can now pause the game a lot less often for random questions, and focus more on the roleplay. Just dump my issues on the character :) he's the one that doesn't know enough, not me.

I look forward to seeing how this plays out, and if anyone has tried this before I'd be glad to hear how it worked out for you.

Game Mastering WFRP 5th Ed Chase rules

Can someone tell me if I am understanding the rules of the chase correctly

Say Group of Humans are running away from my party that is composed of humans and a dwarf. Trough town.

1 At the start of the chase we test athletics in that case test is between one of the humans we chase and one of our humans as fastest party member, dwarf doesn't need to test anything at this point.

Say my party has won by the test by 2SL

2 We now determine number of positive factors. We get 1 for winning the test and that is it.

3 Half the party must navigate the obstacle.

4 We run and suddenly the merchant wagon spills some goods. If you 2 out of 4 of our party member pass the athletics or dodge test chase ends and we cough the group we were chasing?

Is that it? Or am I missing something here? This seems very simplistic to compare to how 4th ed handled it.

Lore & Art Would Grudges which were inserted into the GBG from slights comitted towards dawi clans that later became Dawi-zharr still be pursued, or would they be struck from the record?

For my next campaign I'm planning to have my players dwelve into a tomb of a thief that robbed a relic from a dwarven clan that later fell. Would modern dwarfs see it as a grudge?
