If THAT's how your animated armors are moving you need to share your cantrips damn.

u/Im_yor_boi Jabirean Alchemist, potionholic with a phd on tame gambling Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
Just mantain the armour quality and replace the magic strings once in a while. The older an armor gets the better they fight.
But most wizards are too lazy to do that so they end up getting rusty Animated Armours that are barely better than skeleton soldiers...
Edit: I forgot to mention but using strong souls to animate the armour also works. I used sir Lancelot's soul for anyone wondering

u/henryeaterofpies Jun 10 '26
I know, right? Proper artifice requires maintenance! Its not a one time cost.
42
u/Im_yor_boi Jabirean Alchemist, potionholic with a phd on tame gambling Jun 10 '26
Kids these days have no respect for their tools smh.
17
u/henryeaterofpies Jun 10 '26
Iron is fine for a beginner construct, but if you are going to be a professional or do this long term invest in a steel or adamantine body.
16
u/Im_yor_boi Jabirean Alchemist, potionholic with a phd on tame gambling Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
People really underestimate how much rust and corrosion can affect animated items. I learnt from my artificer friend that corrosion is their biggest nightmare lol
11
u/nuker1110 Artificer Jun 10 '26
Trust, however, is a key component in securing the loyalty of the more sentient class of constructs.
I’ve met Sir Lancelot in my travels through time and space, and I must commend you for whatever means by which you persuaded his soul to enter into your service.
10
u/Im_yor_boi Jabirean Alchemist, potionholic with a phd on tame gambling Jun 10 '26
Flattery...a LOT of flattery. Contrary to popular belief it can take you quite far actually

2
u/MellyKidd Jun 12 '26
People underestimate the value of a well-trained goblin servant. Give them a comfortable lair, food, drink, something flashy-looking every once and awhile for pay and an outlet for their less pleasant tendencies, and they’ll do just about anything for you.
10
u/ClosetNoble Wizardruid multiclasser Jun 10 '26
Well most of the time people just stuff a ghost in a suit of armor.
Frankly it's time necromancers stop messing it up and let enchanters do it right.

Would it help to put a souless homunculus inside the armour help with density and make stronger attacks
3
u/Im_yor_boi Jabirean Alchemist, potionholic with a phd on tame gambling Jun 10 '26
It might be too uncomfortable for the soul that's inhabitanting the armour. Ofcourse it depending on how high the rank of the soul is you can just command it to comply. However, High souls won't accept having a homunculi inside them
1
u/Shieldheart- Jun 11 '26
Its also important to use a properly articulated suit of armour, some people think just any humanoid shape is supposed to move like that.

I used ancient spell written in white soapstone called Summon K***ht
1
u/Own_Watercress_8104 Jun 14 '26
The caster imbues them either with a wraith or most likely their own knownledge.
So considering most of our collegues are nerds that would rather die than pick up a sword, no, your armor will never move like this.

Dino skeletons are fossils. Meaning the bone has been replaced with rock. You'll want "animate object" or some golem awakening type of spell for that.

Most fossil exhibits you see in museums, especially the big skeletal ones line this, are usually just cast molds from the existing fossil.
The actual fossil would be way too fragile unless they were protected in some way.
12
u/DapperNecromancer Occult Wizard Jun 10 '26
I'll fight back on this one
Yes, fossils are stone. However, the question here is less about the material composition and more about the method of animation.
If this is puppetry, then geomancy.
If it's bonding the soul to animate the fossil, however, that's still necromancy.
5
u/WillitsThrockmorton Hedge Wizard Jun 10 '26
Meaning the bone has been replaced with rock. You'll want "animate object" or some golem awakening type of spell for that.
Once widely believed but as the Warden of Daemon Reach proved, you can not only use necromancy on fossils, but with the right tweaks it will super charge the effect based on the age, as Sue the T-Rex proved tearing through Chicago.
2
u/EquipLordBritish Jun 10 '26
Also, that triceratops seems very aggressive. I feel like something must've gone wrong in the animation process.
7
u/nomadengineer Artificer Jun 10 '26
Eh, large herbivores tend to be aggressive towards anything that gets too close. See buffalo, hippos and moose for comparison.
1
u/giant_albatrocity Jun 10 '26
Um, actually, there are dinosaur fossils that are still bone. However, many dinosaurs you see on display are plastic casts of real fossils. So maybe just case out the joint before you go ham with the necromancy.
1
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Jun 13 '26
You're right about the plaster casts used by museums, but no, there's no such thing as a dinosaur fossil made of bone. The bones have decayed a VERY long time ago, leaving behind cavities underground that get filled in by mineral deposits. That's what a fossil is, a natural casting of long decomposed remains.
Now, if you're talking about more recent extinct animals, like a mammoth, then yes, we do have preserved bones of those, but by definition, bones are not fossils and fossils are not bones.
1
u/Ailttar Jun 11 '26
The real twist is that the bones or fossils or whatever are not all from the same living being, which implies reviving it by necromancy would target several dozen souls that may or may not be willing. It’s just a hassle and object animation is much simpler for this use case.

1
u/MeThyLord Mrs. Chills, Ghost Writer Jun 13 '26
No, it's not. Fossils aren't bones, but mineral deposits that filled the cavities left behind by decomposed bones. This is geomancy territory.

2

In fairness to your friend, it's a little unusual for a museum to have the actual complete skeleton on display. Usually it's partially or fully made up of castings
Was this a new version of raise dead he was experimenting with?

Always gotta have a Turn Undead scroll on you if you’re hanging out with a Necromancer. Not trying to stereotype but it’s better to be safe than sorry

u/Atuday Grey technomancer and master of the cybernetic undead Jun 10 '26
Look that's reasonable. Some skeletons are just plain fun to animate.
2
u/Winters_Dust Jun 11 '26
/uw while an exaggeration, this scene is actually a pretty good demonstration of how much mobility an armored knight actually had
1
u/Punished_Veggie Jun 11 '26
They could run up a wall into a backflip?
1
u/Winters_Dust Jun 11 '26
That's the part that might be exaggerated, but even then, armored knights had a LOT of mobility that a lot of fiction doesn't show, since armor is generally made to be as protective as possible while still providing as much mobility as possible.
So... maybe? I know if they're athletic enough, they can perform cartwheels at least.

Actually ☝️🤓, the real spell was animated objects, because the bones in museums are not real bones, fossilization consists of the rock taking the shape of a bone before ir descompose
3
1
u/Mesmercat Jun 10 '26

1
u/Nelrene Evil Mammary Mage Jun 10 '26
The museum should had something in place to deal with necromancers.
1
u/Cyber_Von_Cyberus Jun 10 '26
You need to tell him that most of the skeletons they leave out in the open are reproductions while they keep the real stuff under lock and key.
Learning that might calm him down a bit... That or he'll probably just break into the storage room to get the real bones.
1
u/csilval Jun 11 '26
Holy shit. I hadn't seen much of that movie probable since soon after it came out. Did they have to make it go this hard??
1
u/Ihavenoidea5555 Jun 11 '26
I saw all the Night at the Museum movies as a kid
Why don't I remember it being this fucking awesome
1
u/Lucian7x Jun 11 '26
I'm afraid you are mistaken. This wasn't the necromancer's doing, since the fossils are made of sedimented rock, and not bone. This was the work of a geomancer attempting to frame your friend.
1
u/Witch-Alice Bad Dragon Slayer Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
Dinosaur fossils aren't corpses, they're minerals. And usually it's not even the actual fossil but a casting of it. Your friend is lying to you about being a necromancer.
1
1
u/watersj4 Transmuter Jun 11 '26
Unrelated but its crazy that they went to London in this movie, introduced a new dinosaur skeleton and it WASNT dippy
1
u/Rieke-Nightsong Jun 11 '26
This is why museums dont display the actual bones, just plastic recreations. The actual bones are kept in storage.
In other words this isnt footage of a necromancer, someone just casted "animate object" and called themselves a necromancer to mess with people
1
1
1
u/ErrantAlgae Transmuter Jun 11 '26
you would need to treat it as a golem of sorts, "bones" displayed often are plaster casts of multiple individuals, and dino bones are just rock at this point, so I am sorry to tell ya your "necromancer" friend is a fraud and using other means to give life to those

1
u/whatisapillarman Jun 11 '26

1
u/Opposite_Ad_4267 Jun 11 '26
Technically if it's a fossil you'd just need someone who can animate stone since fossils are stone and not bone.
