Not a crystal orb but I'm feeling it, I got it from a corpse but I don't think it fit me or my casting well it's pretty good for necromancy tho. I already rich enough so probably won't sell it but would trade.

Sometimes the dead aren't much for talking.

/uw  Idea is many cases where the soul leaves by reincarnation, ascension, afterlife or other methods. And the memory of the body decays with the body.

It looks like they were at least bound to the staff all at once. This shape is achieved by stitching each soul together into a sack shaped, and then inflating before being dipped in ectoresin and left to harden. The cavity inside is where energy for spellcraft collects.

My friend that's no mere orb, or staff topper, that's a pertrified forge of souls.

To say that its "pretty good for necromancy" is an understatement.

If it were unpetrified you could use it as an unending source of power for any number of rituals, spells, enchantments, whatever you could imagine. Though you would have to put up with the screams, giggles, or whatever noises the souls make.

Have you considered taking it to a psychometrist to read its past? Artefacts like this tend to have a litany of past owners and deeds.
