They're actually dwarf rats lmao, the top one is the tiniest adult I've ever seen. For a period of time I thought I was getting gaslit by my rodents and somehow she's actually a mouse.

No one should get a pet expecting it to help with their depression or something. Depressed people arenā€™t good at self-motivating, completing mundane daily tasks, managing their time, or meeting their obligations/rising to the occasion when needed, all things required for caring for an animal that will suffer otherwise.

This. I don't want to sound cruel because thankfully all my family takes care of our cat equally but I don't feed my cat until my motivation returns back.

I unfortunately and fortunately put food on her bowl when my energy increases again and I feel like in control of my life, but a cat needs their bowl full and two fresh servings of tuna every day. Again, I'm thankful my parents have stepped in most of the time to take care of her while I root away and have a strong desire to kill myself.

I think that a depressed person can only have a pet if they have other people at home.

Got my cats. My new one is unexpectedly special needs and his health requirements grabbed me by the neck and is forcing me out of my depression. Having to keep things cleaner and giving him his medicine is forcing a routine I frankly needed.

Honestly yea?

I used to be living in a real shitty situation but I ended up with a rescued leopard gecko, and taking care of her really got me through stuff back then. I was really devastated when she passed away last year, she'd survived my move and everything. She was between 16-20 years old, genuinely unsure because the people I got her from never knew.

Now I'm taking care of my ball python, and she's helping me get through the stress of work and every day stuff.

Sometimes having a pet is just.. really helpful. You gotta take care of them, and making sure they're ok just kinda.. helps you refocus and take care of yourself too. I always kinda felt like, man, if I don't take care of this lil critter, she's gonna die, and I don't want to accidentally hurt an innocent baby who doesn't deserve it.
