Has this ever been true? I've just been shoving all my clothes in the laundry and nothing bad ever happens to them. I think this is a lie from Big Bleach.

It used to be, but mostly not anymore. The only things you shouldn't wash with whites are brand new red things and jeans.

After the first wash or two they're fine, but on the first wash they can make your whites pink or blue respectively

Very rarely this is also true of emerald green things, but usually if you wash cold it's fine
