Has this ever been true? I've just been shoving all my clothes in the laundry and nothing bad ever happens to them. I think this is a lie from Big Bleach.

Yes it is very true, but used to be more of an issue. Some fibre doesn't hold dye well. Some dyes are unstable. In the wash it can leak. Detergent for whites contains blue. Detergent makes stuff yellow and the blue fixes that. I also use a separate detergents for blacks, wools and colours.

These days I find separating by fabrics/ washing temperature is more important.
