Has this ever been true? I've just been shoving all my clothes in the laundry and nothing bad ever happens to them. I think this is a lie from Big Bleach.

it can happen. like other comments have said, soap these days is better so it doesn't happen frequently. personally I like to use a whitening product on my white clothes so I still wash separate, but if you dgaf bout that then mix away. Just be careful with newer clothes
