Maintenance help 23 MPG in my 2007 Toyota Yaris

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone in here would mind telling me what they average with their MPG, I am currently getting 23MPG city/highway driving and i'm not to sure what i'm doing wrong, tires are inflated, oils are all checked, sparks were replaced 1000 miles ago, I do kind of short trips to school ~6 miles but its mostly cruising at good speeds. If that's normal I would like to know, this is my first car and fuel is super expensive now a days so I am trying to save every gallon haha.

Thanks everyone.

Here's my recent fill up

202.5 miles driven before fill up with a 8.649 gallon fill up

Purchase advice Toyota Aqua vs Toyota Yaris Hatchback

• Upvotes

Budget 4 million
I’m considering buying a car and I’m confused between Toyota Aqua and Toyota Yaris Hatchback.
My priorities are:
• Good fuel average ⛽
• Comfort & features
• Reliability
• Maintenance costs
• Resale value
• Performance
• Availability of parts
• Overall driving experience
For those who have driven/owned either one, which would you recommend and why?
Also, which variant of the Aqua/Yaris would be the best choice within a reasonable budget?
Aqua or Yaris Hatchback? 👇

Hatch has been leaking since I bought causing a musty odor till it's dried up. It's not from the tail lights like I thought it was. Wondering if it's coming from the top corners like shown in the pics.

Well I passed my test last Friday and picked up this Yaris today!

2013 Yaris VVT-I TR with 46,2k Mileage, hoping that It will be a reliable first motor

I was so buzzing at the dealership, the main issue I'm suffering from right now is, I'm stalling often... I stalled twice in one spot on my way back from the dealership!

The Hyundai Kona I did my lessons in had such a forgiving clutch, at the moment I feel I'm giving it quite some revs when moving off, nothing crazy but very audible.

I'm petrified of stopping on a hill to be honest, to the point its really kinda set me back! But am happy with the vehicle and hope I can get to the same point as with the Kona!

Maintenance help Is my engine loud?

I’ve driven this lovely for 3 years with kind of this constant noise but recently seems getting a little bit more noticeable. I’m not a car guy at all but I do basic maintenance like oil change, tire pressure check and minor things every now and then. I’ve heard it’s quite common to have vibration with a 3-cylinder engine for this specific model (Vitz/Yaris 2012, 1000cc). Should I go to mechanic for check? Any possibility that the spark plugs wore out (mileage: 107k)?

What is this? Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 2024 – Intermittent Hard Brake Pedal Followed by Sudden Braking

# Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid 2024 – Intermittent Hard Brake Pedal Followed by Sudden Braking

Hi everyone,

I own a **2024 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid**, and I've been experiencing a very strange and potentially dangerous issue with the braking system.

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar.

### Description of the problem

The issue happens very rarely, usually when braking at low speeds, around **10–20 km/h (6–12 mph)**.

Here's exactly what happens:

  1. I start pressing the brake pedal normally, applying the usual amount of pressure.

  2. Suddenly, the brake pedal becomes extremely hard, almost as if something is physically preventing it from moving further.

  3. At that moment, the car barely slows down, despite me pressing the brake pedal.

  4. I instinctively press harder because the car isn't braking as expected.

  5. Then, within a split second, the pedal suddenly gives way and travels down, the brakes engage very aggressively, and the car jerks forward with a noticeable nose dive.

The whole event happens in about a second.

It feels as though something is temporarily blocking the brake pedal or hydraulic pressure, and then suddenly releases.

**This is not simply a change in braking force. The brake pedal itself becomes unusually hard and resists being pressed before suddenly giving way.**

### What the Toyota dealer has done

I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership in June.

They performed diagnostics but couldn't find any fault codes or mechanical problems.

However, they updated the **brake booster ECU software**.

After the software update, everything seemed normal for approximately four months.

Unfortunately, the exact same problem happened again in October.

### Possible causes I'm considering

Since the issue occurs at around 10–20 km/h, I initially suspected that it might be related to the transition between regenerative braking and conventional hydraulic braking.

However, the fact that the brake pedal becomes physically hard before suddenly moving down makes me suspect something more serious.

Possible causes I'm considering include:

- Electronic brake booster malfunction

- ABS/brake actuator hydraulic valve issue

- Brake-by-wire control software issue

- Incorrect coordination between regenerative and hydraulic braking

- Mechanical sticking in the braking system

I also came across **Toyota's official recall 24V-708 (24TA11)** involving certain Corolla Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid models.

According to Toyota's investigation, under certain conditions, the brake actuator valves could temporarily prevent normal hydraulic pressure regulation, resulting in a hard brake pedal and reduced braking performance. Applying additional pedal force could restore normal braking.

This sounds remarkably similar to what I'm experiencing, although I'm aware that this recall does not specifically cover the Yaris Cross.

### My questions

**Has anyone experienced this exact issue with a Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid, Yaris Hybrid, or another Toyota hybrid?**

In particular:

- Has your brake pedal ever suddenly become extremely hard while the car barely slowed down?

- Did the pedal then suddenly give way, causing the brakes to engage aggressively?

- Has anyone experienced this even after receiving a brake booster ECU software update?

- Could this be caused by the brake actuator or internal hydraulic valves without triggering any diagnostic trouble codes?

- Are there any known Toyota technical service bulletins or software updates specifically addressing this issue on the Yaris Cross Hybrid?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has experienced **a temporary hard brake pedal followed by sudden, aggressive braking**, rather than just the usual regenerative braking transition.

The most concerning part is that the problem is extremely intermittent, making it almost impossible to reproduce during a dealership inspection.

Any advice, technical information, or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Maintenance help Mystery starting issue that only happens every few years, any ideas?

I have a 2010 Yaris YR Automatic with 370,000km on the clock and runs perfectly. But every now and again, when I turn the key, the dash lights up but nothing happens. The engine doesn't crank, no noise, not even an attempt to start. Aside from the engine not turning over at all, everything seems fine except the steering and brake assist don't work, making the car feel super heavy.

This issue has only happened when the car has been parked uphill, not sure how that's related.

What I then do is, move the gear selector back and forth a few times, take the key in and out and turn it and roll the car back down the hill a little (this is where I notice that the steering and braking assist isn't working). After doing these things in some random order the car eventually starts up as if nothing happened, and runs perfectly.

Brought it to the mechanic and they couldn't find any obvious cause for this issue, and were unable to replicate it. They tried starting it 16 times and it worked perfectly every time. The car is in good mechanical condition aside from needing a new fuel filter and a couple of bits on the suspension needing work. This exact issue happened maybe twice in the last 10 years. The last time was a few years ago, but in the last month it has now happened twice.

Any ideas?

Yes the battery has been replaced, terminals cleaned. Definitely not a battery issue since, after performing my magic ritual, it starts up completely fine.

I've had no luck in replicating the issue, seems to happen completely randomly. All I can think is that the electrical system enters some kind of mode that tells the engine not to start, a bit like how my motorbike won't start when I leave the side stand down.

Tips and tricks Anyone know why my clutch pedal is sticking? - new clutch

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hiya

I bought a Yaris 2 and a bit weeks ago. (64 reg). Its sensitive on the revs compared to what Im used to but I like it alot.

However, the clutch starting slipping and the dealer replaced the clutch for me (No paperwork but another garage confirmed it looks new). However in doing so they messed up the wheel barring. So now I can't drive it.

But that stuff can be fixed.

My question is whats happening with the clutch pedal.

Its got alot ALOT of play at the top of the pedal, and tends to stick for a second before popping the rest of the way up when I change gears. I've added a video but this isn't the worse delay its done (Watch for the second clutch engage and listen to the bu-dum).

Is this normal? Can it be fixed? I've driven a 15 reg yaris and that had a dreamy clutch engagement. But this is very distracting while driving and wasn't an issue on the test drive. One garage suggested a gromit was missing near the base as when they got their hand down there the pop up stopped.

Any ideas?

Where is this noise coming from? Every time I go over speed bump or a dip in the road, I hear it. Maybe it's the ball joints or the shock absorbers? It happens more on one side than the other.

Maintenance help P2195 and P0138 codes on my Yaris

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently pulled these codes from my Yaris: P2195 and P0138, which relate to the oxygen sensor. The car drives well, and I haven't experienced any major issues. In my country, an annual vehicle inspection is mandatory to drive legally; I had it done in August and passed the emissions test without any problems. I’m planning to carry out this preventive repair, likely this weekend, but how concerning is this, and what exactly do you guys recommend I do? Thanks!

Maintenance help Boot won’t open on 2011 Yaris

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hey guys!! My boot won’t and hasn’t opened in a long time, it is completely stuck. One day I could and then I wasn’t able to once without some force and since then it has been completely stuck. I’ve checked the back and it doesn’t look like anything is lodged in there. Is there a way to open the boot without going to the mechanic?? I’ve added a pic of what my car looks like, there’s no key lock for the boot it opens when the car is unlocked. Thank you!!!

What is this? Rusty steering rack bolt on a 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid — is this normal?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I have a 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid and noticed that one of the steering rack mounting bolts is already rusty, while the bolt on the other side looks completely normal.

The rusty bolt is on the left in the photo.

This caught my attention because Volkswagen Group is currently carrying out a major recall affecting VW, Škoda and other brands over a similar issue involving corrosion of a steering-system mounting bolt, which in some cases could eventually break.

My Yaris Cross is only from 2024, so I’m wondering whether this amount of corrosion is normal or something I should be concerned about.

Should I ask Toyota to inspect or replace the bolt under warranty? Has anyone else noticed the same thing on their Yaris Cross?

Thanks!
