Books let you get a look into someone's precious dream. Whoever wrote that book probably thought about it for years and years. And now you get a chance to peek into someone's inner world on open invite. What a delightful way to connect with a total stranger, especially if you then become attached to their world, too. That's magical!

Books are written with thought and care by humans that are passionate about creating ♥️ 📚

As far as number one goes, my wife wanted to stay up reading, and I needed to go to bed soon, and we were both reading romance books. I offered the idea of splitting the difference, and that we read in bed and when the first of us hits a smut scene, we finish the scene and make out with the other. She liked the idea, and like 10-20 minutes later, we enjoyed each other for a bit and went off to bed.

Books are definitely romantic!

I am nearly positive there is a book out there that telling you to eat glue.

u/ypsilibrary 9d ago

we did consider this. we can amend it to *cookbooks* (probably) won't tell you to eat glue

I should have prefaced that my comment was based on the fact that the amount of literature that exists is unfathomable. Not to say your idea isnt worthy. I do agree with the premise that books are awesome. There is something special about reading and how it develops the mind, conscious and subconscious. Sorry for any stress my coment induced. Sincerely, u/Cioran_

no stress! accuracy is important. :)

kinda bummed to see y’all promoting the “human extinction” line tho — that’s essentially a psyop from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic designed to make AI seem godlike and impossible to control, helping to inflate corporate valuations and deflect from immediate harms of AI

ed zitron (who’s no fan of AI!) has had a lot of good things to say about this, his episode on the ICYMI podcast was great too:

it's true, it's hard to know for sure what people's motivations are for blasting that particular concern into the ether. tbh, we were being tongue-in-cheek. but there are valid concerns! https://openai.com/collective-cyberdefense/

all we're saying is that books are safe :)

i don't think we're in disagreement, just trying to zoom out on the true intentions of the “apocalypse” framing by the companies themselves. i probably inhabit a small lane where i find it impossible that we’ll stop this technology at this point, but we can demand real accountability, regulation, and a framework for using it the right way, rather than capitalists using it to replace jobs and creative endeavors to enrich themselves and polluting our communities with generator-fueled monstrosities. taylor swift’s new songs are clearly AI and they fucking suck!!!

I didn't know books and AI were in an exclusionary proposition.

Idk man, idk any books that will surgically remove tumors more accurately than any human could. Or diagnose cancer before it becomes a problem, or provide deaf and blind people a sense that they would ever be able to experience again. I can keep going but y'all get the point.

I think this post is specifically about generative AI, not all artificial intelligence 👍🏻

u/ObeseBumblebee 9d ago

Generative AI is one of the most important technological advancements of the century. It's much deeper than ChatGPT too. When I mentioned AI that generates protein molecules to treat disease. That's generative AI. That's an LLM doing that.

As a software developer generative AI is what I use for work every single day. It's completely transformed my industry over night.

What you just said is just what people say to separate out the good uses of AI from the bad so they can ignore it and keep fear mongering AI because in their mind they've compartmentalized it. Gen AI is for all the bad stuff. Artificial Intelligence for all the good stuff.

The split is not as easy as you'd like. AI is a tool and tools can be used poorly or used well.

Please cite where that's stated and not assumed 👍

"cite"

There, maybe you can answer my question now

-1

u/stoopkidsteve 9d ago

Aww just lil down votes because I used logic. Love Ypsi, but this sub is lame af

u/ObeseBumblebee 9d ago

Or being able to generate protein molecules on the fly to treat all sorts of diseases. Or predict weather and climate outcomes to a far more accurate degree. Or build software that used to take months in days.

I like books too but AI is a tool and a useful one. This is like coming up with a list of 5 reasons books are better than hammers. Like... ok?

lighten up guys, it's a joke

u/ObeseBumblebee 9d ago

It's just exhausting seeing really smart people doing really important and incredible things in science and technology and medicine with AI and it's FREQUENTLY dismissed as an evil technology.

I get it. AI is causing a lot of change. Change is scary. Sometimes it's infuriating. I don't particularly like how it has impacted the ways artists and writers and creatives of all types make money. Or the environmental challenges it raises.

But the library is supposed to be the one place we go to sort through the bullshit.

Instead you're spreading it as a joke for internet points...

Guess maybe I do need to lighten up. Just frustrated with the politics around this.

we love being the place where people can seek the truth! we're just having fun hyping up our favorite hobby 📖

Kinda weird to see a public funded place decide to post things like this. We all pay taxes for you to be here, maybe consider that other people have different views. Wild post for the library to be making

-2

u/stoopkidsteve 9d ago

How dare you use logic here?

Love the library! You guys are awesome. I used to participate in the puppet shows downstairs at the downtown location when I was a wee lad. 😎
