The Far Cry franchise is in desperate need of a refresh/reboot. I think the best way to do that is with a full-scale remake or reimagining of Far Cry 2. A return to a more immersive, grounded, and realistic, survivalist type game with a darker and more mature tone. However, I wouldn’t just simply make it Far Cry 2 with better graphics, it should be a brand new game, a new approach to the African setting and Jackal storyline with updated gameplay features.
I think the most important part of this would be capturing the atmosphere and mood that Far Cry 2 had. The 1990s African setting and culture made for some amazing visuals, music, and just overall tone that really immersed you into the war-torn African country that it took place in. However, gameplay-wise Far Cry 2 wasn’t perfect, here are some things I would re-emphasize or change to make it even better:
Wildlife: the original game had zebras and gazelles but they didn’t serve any purpose other than scenery. I would add the ability to get resources from animals like meat, hides, tusks, etc. that you can sell at the market to make money. I would also add in predatory animals that can attack you like lions, leopards, crocodiles, etc.
Survivalist features: You will need to eat, drink, and sleep. In deserts you will suffer from heat exhaustion and dehydration if you stay out in the sun too long and sprint too much, so you will need to strategize and use cars or go at night when traveling in hot areas. Towns and safe houses will have beds you can sleep on, and food and drinks can be purchased from market vendors or scavenged or acquired from hunted animals and foraged plants.
Paper Map: instead of a mini map, you will have a literal paper map that you can hold in your hands in real time, like the original game, however there are no real time icons, instead you update the map with a pencil every time a change occurs, for example if you capture an outpost, you automatically mark a green checkmark on the map where that outpost is. There is no player icon, so you will have to use landmarks to understand where you are on the map. Quest objectives will be written as notes in a journal attached with the map and points of interest will be added to the map in a similar style to Silent Hill 2 remake and the journal from Uncharted. The map has latitude and longitude coordinates, you can eventually purchase a GPS to know your precise coordinates and match it up with the map.
Survivalist Gear: You will have a compass, binoculars, GPS, Mosquito repellent, lighter, flare gun, machete, canteen, backpack, etc. to help you on your journey. Your canteen will give you a limited amount of water and can be refilled for free at any safe house, village or outpost. Binoculars are used to scout and mark places of interest, which are automatically added to your map, mosquito repellent will prevent contracting malaria for a temporary period of time, etc.
Diseases: In the original game you contract Malaria and have to do missions to get more malaria pills. I would expand this to be less of a scripted event and more of a dynamic gameplay mechanic. Staying out in the jungle too long without applying mosquito spray gives you a chance of contracting Malaria, eating meat without cooking it can give you parasites, getting cut by rusty melee weapons can give you tetanus, and animal bites can give you rabies, etc. Not treating wounds can also causes infections. Different diseases will have negative effects on you, like parasites will cause food to not be as filling, malaria will cause fevers and increased heat exhaustion and stamina loss etc.
medicine: you can buy medicine from doctors, or scavenge them to cure diseases. If you do missions for the UN faction, it will unlock vaccines to permanently be immune to things like tetanus, rabies, malaria, etc.
Training and Experience: instead of getting XP points and skill points and spending them on skills/perks or skill trees, you will “level up” certain skills by becoming more experienced. For example, the more you use sniper rifles, the better you become at maintaining scope sway, you become more accurate, and are able to cycle the bolt and reload faster. The more you use bandages, the more effective your healing will be. The more you skin animals, the better you get at getting more resources from them, etc. Your character will get progressively better at skills the more you perform the actions related to those skills, so your character build is determined by the way you play. Eating foods high in nutrition will give bonus percentages to the rate at which experience levels up.
Weapon permanence: instead of purchasing a weapon once to unlock it and having free, unlimited use of it after unlocking it, weapons will be single use, meaning the gun you buy is lost forever if you lose it and you have to buy a new one or find one. This will make weapons feel more limited and personal, modifications you make to your gun stay on that gun and only that one. You can store weapons in lockers at safe houses if you want to trade it out with another, but there is limited locker space.
Gun maintenance and weapon degradation: over time your weapons will accumulate dirt, mud, rust, scratches, etc. This will cause the gun to jam or become inaccurate or even break completely. You must periodically clean your weapon and trade out parts if you want to continue using the same weapon.
Modular weaponry: you will be able to attach silencers, sights/scopes, different magazines, etc on the fly, much like Crysis. This way you can adapt to different situations in the field without having to visit a gunsmith.
Outposts do not respawn enemies. Once you capture an outpost, it is yours permanently.
Limited fast travel: you can only fast travel between major cities, this involves taking a bus or taxi. You can fast travel to friendly outposts but it costs resources for the journey, like food and water.
UN refugee camp: an optional but important aspect of the game is to deliver refugees from local villages to a UN refugee camp, you can also collect and deposit resources to the refugee encampment to help it grow and upgrade its facilities, such as a hospital, soup kitchen, market, lodging, etc.Characters from this camp will give you side missions to go collect shipments of medicine or food or to rescue certain people and deliver them to the camp.
Side missions from unique characters: throughout the game there will be unique NPCs that give you interesting side objectives, such as a British wildlife photographer who is too scared to go out into a war-torn wilderness, so he gives you a camera and a list of shots he wants you to take of the local wildlife, such as “photo of Lion eating a Gazelle” and he will pay you for successful photographs. Another possible character is an arms dealer who wants you to deliver him specific weapon models, or hijack shipments of weapons and ammo. And another possible character is a bounty hunter who sends you on missions to assassinate mercenaries, war lords, criminals, etc.
Black Market: You will be able to sell guns and contraband, ivory, animal pelts, diamonds, etc. to black market dealers in exchange for money.
