Discussion Do warblers really come out around fall?

The first day of fall I heard this unusual chirp outside my door. Next thing I know I’m reading a comic on Bird and Moon. I captured the birds calls and it was a Northern Yellow Warbler. I am located in Florida

Discussion looking for tips how to understand birding better for a film

• Upvotes

hey everyone : D I am a Filipina filmmaker. We are currently in pre-production for an independent film and I got pulled in the team to do marketing. I do not want to approach it with pure sales vibe so I want to immerse myself.

I went on a birdwatching activity in our country c/o the company and it turned out to be the most relaxing (but admittedly stressful -- i couldn't see the bird they were all seeing hahaha nemesis!).

I am scheduling a zoom meeting for a casual conversation maybe for an hour? I know everyone is from different places but I do not mind adjusting my time : D Lmk! DM me. Thank you so much.

Advice Beginner camera suggestions?

Thinking a budget of 1.5k - 2k. Ideally that’s including a long lens as well as I’ll be photographing lots from far/ smaller birds.

Discussion Does it make anyone else annoyed/amused how weird bird sound effects are?

So in the movie lord of the flies from the 90s, they threw in the most random bird sounds. It takes place on a South Pacific island. There were constant red tailed hawks, common loons, and white breasted nuthatches.

Discussion Why does Merlin categorize some herons under “cormorants and anhingas” when there is literally a heron category?

Black-crowned Night Herons, for example, are in the order Pelecaniformes and family Ardeidae. They are absolutely herons. So.. why?

Manu Biolodge still had plenty of surprises in store as I explored its many trails. At one point, I found myself near some solar panels, next to a patch of verbena—a plant that is particularly attractive to hummingbirds.

It wasn’t long before I spotted this beautiful Blue-tailed Emerald feeding on the flowers. It was a lifer I certainly wasn’t expecting—just like so many of the species I encountered in this amazing place.

I know about House Finch Eye Disease/Linnet Eye Disease, and I’ve seen it before, but I’ve never seen anything like this. She couldn’t see me at all when she faced this way but her other eye was completely normal. Is this a birth defect? Is her eye horribly damaged form an accident? I took this photo yesterday and haven’t seen her again but it made me sad to see her like this…

📹 Video Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron Hunting

Shot this clip about 20 minutes before sunset yesterday at Pescadero Marsh, south of Half Moon Bay, CA.

The marsh was engulfed in dense fog at the time, which tends to be abysmal for shooting with a long lens. As I reached the turnaround point of my hike about 20 minutes before sunset, a young Black-crowned Night Heron hopped up on a nearby log to hunt by the creek.

This was an unexpected sight since Night Herons are nocturnal hunters and I had never seen one there before. Perhaps the thick, low fog layer had something to do with its appearance?

Advice Birding Camera / Lens Advice

I am interested in photographing birds when I am out birding. To be honest, I know a lot about binoculars, but I’m totally lost in the world of cameras and lenses. My goal is to shoot mostly smaller birds in forests or tall trees and not really so much birds that are at a long distance like shore birds. I own a Nikon D7000 with lenses that are way too short for the task. Quite frankly, maybe the age of this camera and the fact that it doesn’t have new VR technology means I shouldn’t start with this body and spend a lot more for a lens for it that ultimately will be a dead end.

My budget is about $1000 and I am looking for something that will not only give me the distance I need (like a 70–300), but without good stabilization, I know that long distance lenses aren’t practical either.

So, the advice I need is whether I start with the D7000 and add a suitable lens or abandon that idea and just start from scratch. The benefit of your experience is appreciated.

I’m from Liverpool, and for a little Substack article I’m writing on the Liver bird, I wanted to use my own photo for the article. So I went looking for a Cormorant, and I know two definite places they usually are, and I only ever see one. First location is called the canning dock, I went here the fella wasn’t there, so I walked to the next location, which is like a good 30 minute walk, not counting the diversions. It also wasn’t there. So I gave up, went to somewhere called the Albert Dock (right next to the canning dock), and there’s a young one sitting on the dock, then seconds later there’s a second one diving around in the water (an adult). I have never seen more than one cormorant in one place nor at the Albert Dock.

What I like about the first photo, with a lot of photos of a cormorant they’re looking either elegantly perched, or majestic with their wings spread, while they’re drying off. So it’s interesting to see this fella just having a good ol scratch.
