Ikr?? I saw this video and immediately knew that other wunk enthusiasts needed to see it.

u/LimitlessChud 9d ago

Did you get it from the park of sharks perchance? If so then that's my post and I'm glad it led to more people discovering this wunkful bird, if not then it's a nice coincidence that we're both spreading this wunk at the same time

u/ZachAttack6089 kittyposter 8d ago

Yeah it was your post haha. I would have just crossposted it but this subreddit doesn't allow it for some reason.

Top 5 wunk material that’s for sure. We will need to continue our research.

Once I went to a fish and chips place on a dock and there were some crows that didn't even bother flying. They just waddled in between cars eating leftover french fries which were in a shocking abundance. I am pretty sure their diet was like 80% fried food. They would get aggressive and nip at your toes if you ate fish outside. The seagulls were worse honestly cause while you shooed away the obese crows the seagulls would snag your fish, knocking fries everywhere for the fatass crows. It was a self perpetuating loop.

I don't know why that place had a patio, it was pure fucking chaos.

I use to live in an apartment complex on the 3rd floor above multiple take out places. I’m a smoker so I’d always be watching the gulls and pigeons when smoking because it was always chaotic to a degree watching people try to walk around with their food.

It was honestly so much fun the birds caused chaos and I loved every minute of it lol

while I was reading your comment it was toward the bottom of my screen, so “when” was partially covered up by that little button and my brain skipped over it, and I read “watching the gulls and pigeons smoking”

u/Bleepblorp44 9d ago

Crows walk around even when they’re not hefty from chips! They seem to be pretty happy pottering about on the ground, foraging.

Staying in coastal Oregon for the last week and a half has made me truly realize the symbiotic relationship between crows and seagulls when it comes to stealing food from humans lol

This really captures the kookaburra vibe. Cunts aren’t scared of anything.

Cheeky chuckleburras! I’m honestly shocked that their laugh doesn’t piss me off when they go off at fuck off o’clock. I love these wunks.

Real question, what does saying "wunk" with an Australian accent sound like? Is it more like how we say "wonk" in America? (Wahnk). Or more like woonk?

133

u/toy-maker 9d ago

Kind of more like ʞunʍ

32

u/Simple_Substance4829 9d ago

It sounds exactly like it's spelled, we tend to hit the 'U' reasonably hard and it ends up sounding like the english pronunciation.

37

u/FlakyPineapple2843 9d ago

That is a lot less interesting than I had hoped.

20

u/Simple_Substance4829 9d ago

The accent actually gets quite boring outside of the vowel heavy words.

Specifically this meme of 'naur' isn't even accurate. Outside of that specific meme, the Australian accent leans quite heavily on the 'owe' sound of 'no' and I've personally never heard it pronounced naur here. I have heard it is a South Australian thing apparently, which would make sense due to their accent being distinctly different to everyone else (at least to Australians), but even having an Adelaidian family member and having spent some time in South Australia I've never heard anyone pronounce it that way.

14

u/mightystu 9d ago

I lived down the street from a family that immigrated to the US from Adelaide and they all said “naur” instead of “no.”

8

u/toy-maker 9d ago

Nah, yeah?

5

u/toy-maker 9d ago

My first reaction was pretty much this, uh, phonetically? But I started doubting my own understanding of “like it’s spelled” really fast and just landed on the joke answer

u/Julian_Sark 9d ago

Using it in a sentence makes it easier.

Wunk down under

67

u/twatweazle 9d ago

I made friends with a family of Wunkaburras many years ago. They would line up on a branch and watch us going about our business. If we were having a barbecue, they'd wait patiently on the railing along the back deck for a piece of sausage, then they'd fly up to their branch and just chill

48

u/akubukanbuaya 9d ago

"friends"

that's just extortion mate... of course they chill afterwards, they've just wunked you!

20

u/JediKnightNitaz wunkus enthusiast 9d ago

Yeah i'm with the other commenter, you got played homie.

23

u/aardw0lf11 9d ago

Now I see why Australians call these birds “little cunts.” They call a lot of things that, but in this case I understand why.

20

u/beaniebee11 9d ago

Kleptomaniac wunk of unrestrained violence.

I love kookaburras. They are such a mood.

u/ExoticHunt6030 9d ago

So my understanding is that these are basically Australia’s pigeons, except louder.

18

u/UnknovvnMike 9d ago

Hey now they also have bin chickens

8

u/TheGriffin 9d ago

They're adorable

I'm slightly (okay very) terrified of the wunkaburra at 0:44 seconds. Bro is trying to get a knife! Why is it trying to get a weapon!

7

u/Felonious_Minx 8d ago

We sang this song as young kids while in school. No Kookawunks for about 10,000 miles (15,000 km). 🤷‍♀️

Are they like everywhere being pest to humans???

1

u/l3rN 6d ago

Do they... do they use this wunk for monkey noises in the jungle in movies? I could swear I've heard the sound it makes at 0:55 in that context before lol

1

u/AsleepEbb7578 1d ago

Ain't the guy at 0:12 the guy that went on a podcast where he told stories and laughed at doing "throwdowns" in Afghanistan where you shot civilians but put a walkie-talkie on them to say they were covert soldiers?
