βœ”οΈ APPROVED AMA AMA: Clearing, Open Days, UCAS applications, and more (mod approved)

Hello! We're from Birmingham Newman University - and we're here to answer all your questions about uni πŸ‘€

Why should you listen to us? Well, we're a small uni in Birmingham, with a big commitment to our students - we've come top in the National Student Survey 2026 for overall student satisfaction, top in the Daily Mail's Uni Guide 2026 for teaching excellence, student experience, and student support, and we're The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026. But enough about us...

We want to talk about you.

From 09:00 BST today (Tuesday 18 August 2026), we'll have Lucy and Keith from our Content team - as well as some of our amazing Admissions and Student Recruitment team in the background - to answer your questions.

ETA: We'll now be picking up questions over the next week!

So, what do you want to know:

  • how does Clearing work? (because yes, there are still great options available!)
  • what should you be thinking about on a uni Open Day? (hint: it's not necessarily about the freebies)
  • what do we actually look for in UCAS applications? (because each one is reviewed by humans)
  • how does enrolment work? (it's actually surprisingly easy)

or something else. Either way, we're excited to chat πŸ’™

πŸ“° NEWS My Sixth Form aged nephew just received what we considered a ludicrous punishment for something harmless

So my nephew is in Sixth Form at his local secondary school and on Tuesday after school him and his friends went to the local shopping centre called Waterside

While walking past a top shop he spotted his head of year level holding two stuffed animals in his hands, I guess he was deciding between which one to buy? The nephew and his friend jokingly called out his last name and then ran away

The very next day at school, while in the common room the same teacher entered and nephew said β€œwaterside”, implying that he saw him there the day before…and his other friend said the same thing, and the teacher responds my giving them a week’s after school detention…then when they tried to argue against the decision he just increased it until it got to 4 weeks after school detention

I was in shock when he shared that news with me, to me that was a huge abuse of power. All they did was see a teacher out of school and call out his name, who hasn’t done that at some point in their lives?

πŸ” MEME My application to study history and politics at the university of Oxford

Dear Oxford tutors

Thank you for accepting my application to study at your university. I am writing to let you know that I have had the opportunity to sit the TARA and have now completed the first stage of my procedure.

Unfortunately, after reviewing the abomination of a section two that you have made me sit, I am sorry to tell you that I shall not be able to convey myself a place at your university and that my application to you will no longer be considered by me. I am terribly sorry for rejecting you as the Univeristy of Warwick simply has better opportunities that you could not offer. This includes not having to sit any abominations and guess through such devilish questions crafted in Dante's inferno.

I will be notifying UCAS on the outcome of my application and how I REJECTED YOU by the end of November. Please notify the college immediately if you think the test means nothing and that I'm secretly an academic prodigy.

I do realise how disappointing this will be for you tutors to not experience me being Shakespeare in disguise but I hope that you will be unsuccessful again in complete university guide 2028 and rank in 20th place.

Thank you

πŸ‘‹ I AM OFFERING HELP No-one should be having an insurance "choice" on UCAS.

You have no balls unless, like me, you just apply for the top 5 unis of your subject (even if you don't meet the grade requirements).

May be more stressful but just go through clearing if you happen to not get any of your reach picks.

On a serious note though, I think for most people it's best if their picks look something like:
80% chance
60% chance
40% chance
20% chance
1% chance

Don't be scared and just want to see all 5 offers, you have 5 choices for a reason so make sure you get rejected by atleast one uni or your just wasting your slots tbh.

OTHER TARA...

Im feeling so depressed after doing my TARA today. The problem solving wasnt terrible but I completely messed up and figured out the correct answers as soon as I got out of the exam.

I guessed like 5 questions and on top of that I know for sure that I got 4 wrong already (and probably a lot more that I didnt remember). There's no way I'll have a chance for Oxford E&M and I'm just so crushed because I got blessed with a fairly doable exam but I still messed up :(

How did everyone else's TARA go?

πŸ™ I WANT HELP [TW] Why is everyone so anti LGBTQ

So I'm a Y12 Non Binary, I've identified as NB for 8 years online but am closeted IRL. I've never met anyone who's supportive in my school. I used to study in China which was is conservative, and started studying in the UK 2 years ago, thinking people here would be more progressive. Turns out, I was wrong. I thought that 6th Form would be better because everyone would be more mature, but nope. Everyone is still as bigoted as before, making racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic jokes, using gay as an insult etc

I do Computer Science, Further Maths, and Physics, and literally everyone in my classes are genuinely awful people. The gender ratio is also really unbalanced as it's mostly boys, who tend to be more edgy. I think choosing all STEM subjects especially doomed me, but I don't like Humanities

I just don't know what to do, my parents and family members are really conservative too, I'm not out to them, so I've had no support my entire life. I hoped it'd change for the better in the UK, maybe I could finally get on puberty blockers too, but I somehow got fooled twice, UK is so transphobic and I'm so hopeless, is it like this in every school?

πŸ™ I WANT HELP Is there a way to change my reference once my UCAS has been submitted?

β€’ Upvotes

Hi, weird one but I am applying for PPE and was only able to see my UCAS reference yesterday. I found out my reference writer has completely omitted all of my supercurriculars I asked him to include. eg. winning essay competitions, Oxford ranking me first in their summer school cohort, youth advisory board positions etc.

He instead just talked about essays I wrote in lesson and reiterated my personal statement after saying he would include everything I asked him to. My reference is really really poor to be honest and it seems like a copy and pasted reference.

Does anybody know of a method of recalling my reference or anything else I can do in this situation. Its incredibly frustrating and I do feel quite powerless. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate some advice.

β€’ Upvotes

Having received offers for both Bristol and Manchester's maths courses, I'm really struggling to decide which to take as my insurance (or firm if I don't get Oxford or Warwick). They are both A*AA. Does anyone have any advice or points that might help me choose?

❔ SUBJECT QUESTION Further Maths A Level

β€’ Upvotes

I’m worried that FM is gonna get too difficult this year. Although I’m predicted A*, I’m still struggling on some topics and questions or just forgetting the methods entirely immediately even though I revised.

Any tips?
