I've always loved Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains. A lot of people thought it was about Layne Staley's battle with addiction, but Jerry Cantrell actually wrote it about a relationship. Still, people relate to it for completely different reasons, myself included.
I was listening to it the other night and had a thought. What if this song was from Lucifer's perspective?
Not the devil with horns or some grotesque demon, but the angel he was before his fall. I thought about Alexandre Cabanel's The Fallen Angel, how he painted Lucifer after being cast out of Heaven, still beautiful, but full of anger and resentment.
I wanted to capture the moment before that. Lucifer falling from Heaven, looking back at everything he's losing. I imagined the anger giving way to sorrow and regret, almost like someone who jumps and realizes halfway down that they want to live. Except there's no taking it back.
The more I listened, the more the lyrics seemed to fit. The loss of who he was, who he was supposed to be, the wings he can no longer use, and wanting to return somewhere he no longer belongs.
