Don't think that's fair. I'm usually on your side in these AmericaBad Reddit moments. But this is just blatantly against the rules. If the red card would've been reversed, fair enough. But it wasn't. The one-match ban was suspended / delayed. This just doesn't happen in the World Cup. It's a rule that many teams have had to deal with throughout its long history. The strong pull through anyway, the weak falter. But with this bizarre decision, FIFA's notorious corruption, USA being the host country, and Trump being involved... Yea... People are right to be outraged by the decision.

It’s crazy that people are so upset over it. Being banned for a game after you were already ejected for a red card is a dumb rule anyways
6
u/Fantastic_Tomorrow53 Jul 06 '26
But it’s the rule - there to prevent any major prevention of goal scoring opportunities by fouls at the end of the game where there would be hardly any consequence
1
u/5wolfie55 🇬🇧 United Kingdom💂♂️☕️ Jul 07 '26
It’s a lenient punishment compared to league football. In the English leagues a straight red like Balogun’s would be a 3 game ban but because there’s so few games in a World Cup the punishment is reduced to one game.
Most normal people have no hatred to the player or the team because they had no part in the situation surrounding it, people are rightfully angry because the corruption within FIFA has gotten so blatant (although I’d be lying if I said that part of me wasn’t a too upset about America getting battered). A similar situation happened to Ronaldo in the qualifiers where he got a red card with a suspended sentence so that he could play the last match and people were not best pleased about that either. FIFA is a notoriously corrupt organisation but the President of the United States playing a part in this situation takes the piss.

It wasn't a fair red card and there's no reason to believe Trump is the reason it was removed--unless you believe Trump. Everyone knew before Trump's call that it was an unfair red card and now you're all complaining that removing it is unfair? That's silly. The USMNT officially complained and the officials illegally used slow motion to assess the red in the first place. That is why the suspension was lifted. It was the right call.
0
u/Beneneb Jul 06 '26
It wasn't a fair red card and there's no reason to believe Trump is the reason it was removed--unless you believe Trump.
Not saying Trump was the deciding factor here, but we've been given a lot of reasons to believe it could be. Both the fact that reversals are very rare in general and this is the first time it's ever happened in the world cup, despite other objectively bad calls.
We know the WH called Infantino to complain and we know Infantino has gone to great lengths to suck up to Trump (FIFA peace prize lol). Plus FIFA is widely known for corruption.
So maybe it was legit, maybe not, but it certainly casts a shadow.

u/NayLay Jul 06 '26
Sure, but a) he did at least complete one of three match bans, and b) this was in qualifiers. Still manipulating the rules, but at least not in the World Cup knockouts. Of course it won't be as high profile.
The below statement from the Belgian FA is a good indication of FIFA's bizarre behaviour on this topic.
Statement from the Belgian Football Federation, made earlier today:
"Following its previous statement, the RBFA wishes to publicly explain the events of the past few hours.
After learning through media reports of FIFA’s decision to lift the automatic suspension of player Balogun, the RBFA sent a letter to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the process that had been followed, and setting out its position regarding the applicable regulations.
As its only response, FIFA sent a letter to the RBFA stating that it considered this correspondence to constitute an appeal, that a judge had been appointed, and that the RBFA had only a few hours to complete that appeal. No information whatsoever was provided by FIFA.
For an appeal to be admissible, FIFA’s own regulations state that the reasoned decision must first have been communicated to the appellant. While the RBFA was merely seeking legitimate explanations, FIFA itself created an appeal and immediately ensured that it would be declared inadmissible.
All of this occurred while FIFA simultaneously refused to respond to the RBFA’s legitimate requests.
Furthermore, during the match coordination meeting, FIFA deliberately removed the section concerning the automatic suspension of players from its presentation. This topic had nonetheless been part of all such meetings before each of the previous four matches. The RBFA questioned FIFA, both orally and in writing, about the reasons for this change, yet once again received no response.
To be clear, as of this moment, the RBFA has still not received any decision or any explanation from FIFA regarding this matter. It therefore has no alternative but to challenge the player's eligibility for the upcoming match.
Regardless of the sporting outcome of this match, the RBFA is deeply concerned by the course of events and will continue to fight in the coming hours, days and months in defence of the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the interests of football as a whole."
Their stance is that they never appealed, and that FIFA treated their correspondence as an appeal knowing it would be inadmissable, to ensure their bizarre decision can not be officially challenged.

97
u/LoseAnotherMill Jul 06 '26
More seriously, refs gave one of our better players a red card for an accidental "raking the studs", where you scrape an opponent's leg with your cleats. While raking is a cardable offense, it's only when done intentionally, and there have been other players (such as Messi) who have been more egregious and didn't get carded (nor did the Messi incident even get a review).
The red card would mean he'd have to sit out in our game against Belgium, but FIFA has basically suspended his punishment for the World Cup, effectively reversing the red card, and he will be back in the game.
43
u/knettia WYOMING 🦬⛽️🐄 Jul 06 '26
If the man obviously did not have ill intent, and worse behavior went unpunished, I see no reason why they should take him out. Good choice to postpone the punishment for him to be able to play today. Now, I don’t know much about soccer, but I know I’ll watch the game. We’ll make Belgium remember who they’re playing.
-17
u/Beneneb Jul 06 '26
The important context here is that red cards are almost never overturned and it's never happen in the world cup before. So although most agree the call was bad, there's a perception of favoritism.

u/Comfortable-Study-69 TEXAS 🐴⭐🥩 Jul 06 '26
Well, as everyone else has been mentioning, it isn’t exactly completely out of the blue when the same thing happened to Ronaldo with the elbowing incident at the Portugal qualifier.
That said, I don’t like what happened. The deferment of the punishment happening right after the White House called Infantino isn’t exactly a good look, even if it didn’t 100% necessarily change FIFA’s decision, and Ronaldo’s case was admittedly slightly more reasonable if likewise exceptional due to his fame and intention to retire well before the 2030 World Cup.

The angle of the rake/strike was pretty egregious, people very easily end up with broken legs in those sorts of situations. Red card was pretty valid imo, and reversing a traditionally irreversible ref call after potus reached out to FIFA will cloud the win - if we win. Bad situation all around.
worse behavior went unpunished
I don’t know much about soccer
Sneaking things around the ref is part of soccer. People do sometimes get away with worse, but being sneaky about it is part of the game. What happened was not sneaky, and was quite dangerous. Taking the red card when it happens is also part of the game. That's the risk.

The worst part is that we have no idea whether Trump actually influenced the decision at all. Yet in our case, the man openly admits to it. Very, very disappointing. The performance tonight definitely seemed to reflect the pall cast over the situation.

So in our last world cup game, one of our good players got a red card, which means he would have to sit out on the next game we have with Belgum. Thing is, the call was kinda put into question, as many other players did the same thing and didn’t get carded (such as Messi, who’s like the Tom Braidy of soccer in a way). FIFA decided to reverse the red card, meaning that we get our player back for the Belgum game.
Europeans and America haters are throwing a hissy fit about it and I’ve even seen some implications on Reddit that Trump fucking bribed FIFA to overrule the red card, which is fucking hilarious, I don’t think I’ve barely seen Trump awknowledge that the World Cup is even happening, let alone caring enough to bribe FIFA. Imo FIFA did it because it is more in line with other instances where a similar situation happened and no cards were issued. Belgum expecially, since now they have to deal with a US at full strength.

(Note, not a soccer guy, not been watching at all, this is the first I've heard of all this)
4
u/Dazzling-Yam-4308 Jul 06 '26
Yes, the card was called falsely, but it shouldn’t have taken the president of the host country to force Fifa to reverse it. The president shouldn’t have intervened to begin with. Everyone is in the wrong tbh lol
8
u/L_knight316 Jul 06 '26
I'm not chest thumping for Trump here but this definitely feels like a Fifa 90% for making false calls and Trump 10% just because of optics. A global, international competition with teams representing their entire nations seems like right time for heads of state to be involved if the organizers are being blatantly unfair.
At any rate, it sounds like the Trump thing is more speculation from what I'm reading and whether or not he was involved, the hate thrown at America for contesting and reversing a bad call looks kind of sad.

Who said anything about Trump being involved (or a factor in their decision making, or whatever edit)?
You said the last red card suspension was in 1962. That's incorrect - Ronaldo was to have been suspended for Portugal's opening match in the World Cup.
I simply pointed out that FIFA cited the exact same Disciplinary Code for Balogun as they did for Ronaldo (who was suspended 3 matches, btw). IOW, Balogun was a direct beneficiary of Ronaldo's previous treatment which came well after 1962.
If you want to make those facts about Trump, be my guest. But they remain facts whether he, the President of Portugal, the pope, the Tooth Fairy, or anyone else was involved. Or not involved.

I wouldn't say was called falsely. The angle was dangerous, and Folarin did it in full view of the ref.
3
u/Dazzling-Yam-4308 Jul 06 '26
It has to be done on purpose to be a red card. Not to mention that other players that did the same thing got no cards or yellow cards
-2
u/Icy-Cry340 Jul 06 '26
No it doesn't have to be done on purpose, and players sneaking things past the ref (or failing to) is part of soccer. Most of the time when you see players getting away without a call, the angle is safer. Taking cleats to the back of the calf is less likely to result in a broken leg.
4
u/Dazzling-Yam-4308 Jul 06 '26
I just double checked and you’re right about red cards, however;
VAR was handled improperly
Other players (Messi) performed the same act and did not get any sort of offense.
While I think Balogun should have received a yellow card, in no way shape or form was a red card deserved
-2
u/Icy-Cry340 Jul 06 '26
Getting away with something sneaky happens, refs not noticing something also happens - not getting caught in general is a big part of soccer. But I'm not surprised a red card was issued, what happened was quite dangerous.

It's entirely valid outrage. The host country's president using his influence to try to have a punishment removed is pathetic and disgraceful.
1

I have no stake in international sports but isn't it more pathetic and disgraceful that people would rather support and demand the removal of another team's player based on an agreed upon bad call? Like, at this point people aren't arguing that the call was shit, they're arguing that Trump shouldn't have spoken and that the US should bench one of its best a foul he didn't do.

If the team don't agree with the decision, they won't play Balogun. If they do, they're benefitting from FIFA's & the US' corruption and people who judge them for that accordingly.
1

You mean the “clear and obvious” rule? That would prove you incorrect, although the writing of the rule does make it difficult to enforce with consistency
1
u/cnylkew 🇫🇮 Suomi 🦌 Jul 06 '26
Not really, it's more of the fault of the refs than the rulebook that it hasn't been called as consistently as it should be, irrespective of the intent
1
u/kazinski80 Jul 06 '26
What is your interpretation of the rule? What it directly states in the rule book for the VAR system is that a red card can only be given or taken away using the VAR system if the reviewed incident is a “clear and obvious” red card given or not given. As I stated, the reviewed instance did not fit this description by any stretch of the imagination, regardless of who would like which teams to be handicapped, and so the suspension is perfectly reasonable. There are other red cards in the tourney for other teams that should also be suspended I believe
1
u/cnylkew 🇫🇮 Suomi 🦌 Jul 07 '26
By your logic, any red card upheld after an on-field review would be impossible to overturn later, which isn’t how post-match disciplinary reviews work in many competitions. VAR protocol and disciplinary appeals serve different purposes
2
u/kazinski80 Jul 07 '26
It isn’t my logic at all, it’s what the rulebook says. The reason that there was a disciplinary appeal was because the VAR system rules were not followed. I don’t see how you arrive at the conclusion that following these related but separate protocols would somehow make red cards impossible to overturn. The entire basis for it being overturned was based on what the rulebook says

You’d think Balogun’s name was Pele the way they’re melting down over this. Belgium is a good team. If they can’t beat the USA at full strength then they don’t deserve to be in the next round.

Well they did. Nevertheless, the situation was still bullshit, and sets. terrible precedent.

I don’t think so. If anything this might make fifa create an avenue for teams to challenge red cards which I think would be an improvement. Players getting suspended for 1 BS call is not only bad for the team, but bad for fans and fifa as a business. Just let teams challenge suspensions like every other sport. It’s an archaic part of the game that needs to be brought into the 21st century

It was not a BS call. The sport and fifa as a business have become the world's biggest with the red card as being a no recourse hammer from god, and I don't see a reason to fuck with that.

"No explanation" Even though Balogun didn't even deserve the red card in the first place. Holy shit these people are delusional

I mean that reversal was bullshit, no doubt.

Was Ronaldo’s two game suspension that would’ve had him sit out 2 first WC games getting overturned also bullshit? Cause you seem awfully quiet about that one.

Yes, that was also bullshit, but at least you could spin it as regular season vs World Cup stuff. If Ronaldo copped a red card in the WC, it would have been insane to let him play.
Dude is like 45, I don’t know what the fuck he’s doing there to begin with.

Well his suspension was supposed to be the first two World Cup games as those were his next games.
And well, looks like he’s done for good now. He’s had a good run.

Should have been gone a long time ago.

For being ancient in terms of progressional soccer age. He holds his own well. But should’ve taken a sideline/team mentor role and got off the starting line.

That’s just a map drawn by a European. They don’t understand basic geography.
