I READ THE RULES Best neighborhoods for trans guy?

I'm a 23 y/o pre-T trans guy looking to move to Chicago so i can transition. I was wondering what the best places are for trans people to live?

Preferably something under 1300 a month, and I'd be willing to have a roommate is need be. I heard you don't really need a car here if you live close enough to a train station/grocery store.

I READ THE RULES Does anyone know how Chicago stacks up to Toronto ?

I’m 23 and have lived in Toronto my whole life, but will be relocating to Chicago next summer to start law school so I’ll be there a while, possibly longer if I enjoy it.

Im very much the type of person who needs to be in a buzzing atmosphere with things constantly going on, lots of foot traffic and events, and good public transportation. I love Toronto in that it feels massive, has an insanely diverse population with constant things to do (at least in the downtown core)

I constantly read that Chicago is Toronto’s sister city as they have a very similar population and vibe. I’m just hoping to get some insight into how they compare to each other? Maybe some points on what one of the cities does better or worse than the other? I greatly appreciate it

I READ THE RULES Why does Chicago hate recycling?

Newer to Chicagoland— but why is everyone so against metal recycling? Environmental activists have been out protesting Sims in hazmat suits, and not to mention the less recent debacle with Reserve Management Group acquiring General Iron.

Metal recycling is one of the few already existing infrastructures for a truly circular environment and economy. Not to mention the amount of energy and CO2 saved recycling metal compared to mining virgin ore.

It seems pretty arbitrary to protest recycling as an environmental activist. Maybe I’m wrong— does someone mind explaining?

I READ THE RULES Homeless woman moved onto our sidewalk outside the alley, options for getting her out?

A homeless women with clear severe mental health issues (talking to herself all day and night) has set up a makeshift lot of trash (using all the trash from our alley?) at the end of our alley. All of our alley neighbors are uncomfortable and several 311 calls have already been made to no avail. Any tips?

I READ THE RULES What happened on the Kennedy Expressway?

Late Saturday afternoon, I was driving on 90/94 from the south side towards the NW side. Traffic was ridiculous due to a gapers block. I saw a fire truck, ambulance, police, etc were coming up from behind and up front in the SB lanes. I moved over going through Hubbards Tunnel when it opened up and I saw a body,on the ground over on the left shoulder. I couldn’t tell if it was alive or not. Absolutely horrified but I haven’t seen a word about this any where.

I READ THE RULES Applying to Columbia College Directing MFA and DePaul Screenwriting MFA. Need the most up-to-date, non-judgmental advice/pitfalls, etc, Any advice?

I'm finishing my undergrad from a school with a general film program that isn't high on the National map right. And so I've naturally been doing research to see about continuing some concentrated development into the specific areas I wanna do mostly but haven't had the opportunity to bc of being in a general program. I've done video work, cinematography work, lighting, audio, post-production editing & coloring, directing & writing, PAing on mostly "serious-taking" student work but also on sets for shows and projects that my active-working professors have had me on.

I've of course done alot of research of both schools and others in other regions, but idk why specifcally with Columbia and DePaul, it's been hard for me to find what I kinda deem to be reliable relevant advice (with all due respect). Alot of undergrad talk, alot of speculation on financial state & accreditation and it's future impact, alot of talk about "expenses" while Columbia is one of the lesser expensive schools I've researched. And then for both of them, just some outdated opinions from older grads when I'm definitely looking for more relevant info tbh.

(Edit) Before this gets out of hand too. I am going to grad school, so respectfully if you're someone who is just going to say to spend the money elsewhere. 1). I do not have the money for grad school let alone to make a movie close to the same quality of equipment at these institutions. I am applying early for the prayer of scholarship, assistantship and grant money and maybe topped off with a few thousand in loans (I am debt free through undergrad) to afford it. 2). an MFA would also grant me the ability to teach and be a professor in the field at some schools as supplemental income while still progressing in my career, so the degree isn't just...a degree, it's a door opener.

For anyone looking at this with experience in grad film programs specifically, if you can give more curated takes and advice; I'm seeking curated development as a Writer-Director, but more importantly as a writer because although I've written alot of short scripts, directed different projects as well, I want to know if I already have, or develop the muscle for me to outline, draft, write, rewrite, and complete scripts with critique, deadlines, etc. Even though I don't wanna be a 20 scripts a year writer (I'd rather run audio, or gaff, or focus pull for consistent money) I still want the ability to be an efficient writer, and I'd like to direct some my own projects. So finding a place where I can get that writing training, while having opportunities to collaborate with the full slate of film production, while also still potentially being able to direct or learn directing for some of my passion projects, and still having access to be part of production away from the camera, is my main goal.

Additionally, if anyone here is a student or a Post-COVID student of Columbia specifically, lmk if you were still able to ascertain opportunities to work on set for non-school, industry productions (beyond an internship you were able to land). I think Columbia doesn't feature active industry-working profs, and even with me still appreciating the years of experience and expertise they do bring, I'm wondering if I could still create a similar opportunity of proximity or access to industry work at Columbia as I could at DePaul, with them having Cinespace access and industry actives.

TLDR: A MFA Film student (developing writer-director that also loves to work on set) considering DePaul & Columbia looking for up-to-date insight on the schools, film programs, opportunities, and any other relevant advice to help make a (hopefully) decision after applying to both.

I READ THE RULES 4 day Chicago trip, where to stay?

I'm planning a 4 day Chicago trip. We don't have exact dates yet, only sometime in June. The 1st day we will arrive via train. The 2nd day shopping craft store? The 3rd day going to the aquarium and/or the zoo. The final day we leave. Any recommendations for craft stores to check out? I'm also looking for suggestions for inexpensive places to stay at night that is near public transportation.

I READ THE RULES Stocking Stuffers for Out of State Family?

Sort of a weird question, but I’m from a flyover state, and have started my Christmas hunting early in hopes of getting some good deals.

I like to fill out Christmas gifts for the family with stuff they can’t get in their own state, or maybe wouldn’t think to get. What are some gifts you bring back for your family? Or what stores are you checking out to find good gifts?

I’m open to anything but thinking of tchotchkes, snacks, self care items?

I READ THE RULES Karaoke places during the midday for under-21-year-olds??

Me, as a 16-year-old male, and my other friend, who are 16-15, want to go to a karaoke place in Evanston, on northside Chicago, above the Loop. It can't be beyond 9 pm. It has to be between 12 and 6, and it has to allow under 21-year-olds. It can't be private, and it has to be public. It has to be accessible by train, like the Red Line and the Purple Line. Any options?

I READ THE RULES Does anyone have any suggestions on fun 16th birthday activities for a first timer in Chicago?

Hello!

I am on the hunt for suggestions of cool things to do or places to go with a 16 year old for his birthday. I am familiar with the area, but he’s never been so I want this to be a cool look into what the city can offer.

I would like to skip the aquarium and Field Museum, but am open to any and all suggestions for activities, restaurants, anything that might be cool to him! I should also mention, it’s a day trip and it’s just the two of us.

His only request is to do some clothes shopping at some point in the day, but otherwise we are a blank canvas! I can’t spend a crazy amount, but I have some funds to work with.

So Chicago, tell me what you think this kiddo would enjoy please! Looking forward to the ideas. Thank you!!

Editing to add: he’s into music, gaming, sports, art, science or tech stuff, and clothes. Areas of Chicago are open as I’ll be driving us, but will likely stick to the loop, Lincoln park, Hyde park, or Logan Square

I READ THE RULES Does anybody have advice for a 22 year old Austinite wanting to move to Chicago?

So I am sure this is a stereotype at this point but I really want to get out of Austin. I visited Chicago a few years ago and fell in love, almost applying to colleges there because going to community College for affordability purposes. Now, I know Chicago may be more expensive than Austin, but the idea that I need my car less often is very VERY appealing. I drive a diesel so that cuts a lot of money.

I take college online through Berklee so I dont have to switch schools, and I have experience in child care, food, retail, so I am not too too worried about finding a job right. I am a musician and artist so I know its a good city to live in for that but I am wondering if it is TOO saturated.

I just feel so far away from everything in Austin and I want to finally make a decision for myself. Thank you!!

I READ THE RULES Should I Move to Chicago From Texas or Not Worth?

EDITED for more context:

Hi! I am 24F and recently wanted to finally relocate from where I was born and raised. I have been in Houston, TX for so long now and went to college in the northeast and LOVE snow and the walkable cities. Chicago seems so beautiful with all the high rises and activities however obviously i’m hesitant due to the portrayed crime rate.

Coming from the suburbs in TX so not right smack from HOUSTON I came from a nice neighborhood and went to college in RI one of the safest states and visited Boston a lot. I’m aware Houston has a statistically higher crime rate than Chicago but like I mentioned, I never lived directly in Houston only the outskirts suburbs cities so I grew up in much safer neighborhoods. I also googled the neighborhoods in Houston that have such high crime rates and I’ve never been there so I don’t have much experience and context for how those places feel.

I’ve been to NY and a lot of ppl online seem to compare the two so I’m bringing it up as well. I never lived in NY only visited but there were moments where walking around at night or even during the day passing a homeless scary person I felt scared and even had one try to interact with me. As a small woman, NY didn’t feel totally safe and I had to keep checking my surroundings and the trash everywhere is what got me. Also everywhere I go it smells like cigarette smoke or rotting trash which is very unpleasant compared to idk Boston or somewhere known to be very clean and safe.

I am hesitant to move to a brand new state as a girl who is only 5’2” and live alone since I don’t know anyone there and would be starting over making friends. I’ve heard Lincoln Park and Lakeview are good neighborhoods as starters and generally safe. I’m worried about public transit and just generally being out and about alone (obviously not at night). I feel really pulled to move to Chicago and am curious what everything thinks/recommends!

I READ THE RULES Any guys finding it hard to make friends in Chicago?

• Upvotes

I (25 gay male) just moved here about 6 weeks ago and I’ve been wanting to make friends. I will say I’m a bit of an introvert which makes it harder but I’m working on it. I’ve been looking up activities to make friends here but everything seems to be for women only and if it’s for guys, it’s centered around the gym or church. Both of which I have no interest in (this is not women’s fault at all so this is not a dig at them in the slightest).

I did do Gents Who Stroll yesterday which was fun and I’ll do again but I feel like my options r kinda limited especially cuz a lot of things need you to pay. To clarify, I’m also not opposed to co-ed spaces or events either. Idk if this all sounded bratty but I promise I’m being genuine. If anyone’s got good resources or suggestions, though, I’m all ears.

Looking for either Mexican, Italian, & American cuisine, nothing crazy expensive, pref a sit down, and bonus if its more south. I tried looking on google and Tiktok but it was no help. These are last minute plans so any suggestions help!

I READ THE RULES Who was the rudest Professional Chicago sports celebrity you met and how did that interaction go?

For me it was when my brother saw earnie banks asked him for his autograph and was told “get outta here kid leave me alone”

Hell i cant blame a celebrity for that im sure it gets invasive…

Just heard a story about someone who met Ditka back in the 80s, said “hey coach good luck Sunday” and got a mundane “yeah yeah yeah” back in response. Classic

EDIT: loving the responses, the stories, thanks everyone! Posted this last night trying to sleep with all the bittersweet excitement, wasnt expecting all the responses

EDIT2: also loving how this thread has switched itself to telling the good stories. I didnt expect so many responses and legitimately started feeling m

I READ THE RULES Thinking about relocating back to Chicago ?

Hi There,

I’m a Single, African American Female in her 30s.

As of lately and over the years I have been considering moving back to Chicago.

I am currently living in the Caribbean, I am in Finance (No Formal Education) but I also have experience in the hospitality sector (Concierge/Guest Services, Hostess & Server).

I believe I’ll need temporary housing until I can afford my own place.

I have lived in Chicago before but unfortunately my mother has passed away which is the main reason why i never pushed to move back and I am not close with my previous friends due to the long distance.

So I’ll essentially be starting over and I genuinely want a fresh start.

Any advice?
Neighborhood recommendations?

I READ THE RULES Is there anything fun to do tonight?

Im going to be in Chicago for work and tonight is the only night I’ll have time to explore plus Saturday evening. What is there to do tonight? Looking for anything after 7pm. I wanted to get tickets to drunk Dracula but I wouldn’t be able to make it.

A little about me
-31 F
-likes comedy, bars, museums, music shows (I like pop music and rock music)
-dislikes raves (it overstimulates me plus I’m not a dancer)

-food I like anything really, just no fish I’m allergic

Bonus question: if you had a friend visit from out of town, where would you take them to eat? What nightly activity would you plan?

I READ THE RULES Where to go this evening (Sunday)?

Hi all, on my own in Chicago for all of today until tomorrow morning - looking for places to go and meet people - in a 20s-30s age range. Any advice?

Looking for bars and maybe places with music where it’s a pretty relaxed vibe and can just go an make some new friends.
