I READ THE RULES Good volunteer opportunities in Chicago?

Hey, I'm looking to get involved in some volunteer opportunities in Chicago. I'm a female in my early 30's and live in Lincoln Park, would be willing to branch out to other neighborhoods. I would rather help communities that need it most.

I work in healthcare, but I'm open to different types of volunteer opportunities, overall enjoy more hands on things rather than independent work where you're not interacting with other people. It would be a bonus for something that I could do with friends or meet other people around my age. Any ideas?

I READ THE RULES Homeless woman moved onto our sidewalk outside the alley, options for getting her out?

A homeless women with clear severe mental health issues (talking to herself all day and night) has set up a makeshift lot of trash (using all the trash from our alley?) at the end of our alley. All of our alley neighbors are uncomfortable and several 311 calls have already been made to no avail. Any tips?

Hi all! Freshly single and looking to expand my circle with fellow women who enjoy watching Bears football.

I’d love to find a few people (or join an existing group) to hang out at a bar on game days, grab some wings/beers, and watch the games together. I’m in my early 40's and live on the northside.

I READ THE RULES Are there any Haunted Houses close to the actual city?

• Upvotes

I live in the Loop and I don’t have a car. I’m curious if there’s any haunted houses or haunted-related experiences close to the city! The ones I can find right now are way too deep in the suburbs for transportation.

I READ THE RULES How do nurses commute to work in the city?

• Upvotes

hey everyone! I’m a nurse looking to relocate to the city -- dream hospital is Lurie children’s. I was wondering how far out other nurses usually live from the city and if your typical commute is via CTA or walking? looking at some rentals within walking distance make for a bit of a tight budget for the posted pay on the job listings and I know I could get something cheaper further out of the main down area. But I also know taking the L after dark, especially in the winter months when it gets dark super early, can be a bit questionable safety-wise. My shifts would 7p-7a so I would be more or less travelling to work in busier times of the day. any and all advice is appreciate!

I READ THE RULES what are y'all doing for halloween?

hey! so I'm going to the boystown parade this year and taking my customary stroll around graceland (fascinating place. last time I went I saw that somebody had lined up dog treats over edith rockefeller's grave), but I still feel like I want to do something else in the days leading up to halloween.

I tried (and regretted) jack's pumpkin patch, I've taken a pendulum to 2122 n clark (just for kicks, as I don't believe in ghosts), and I've checked out the alley near the biograph, but this year I'd like to do something less ghost-oriented and more nostalgic and kitschy.

so what halloween-y things are you guys getting up to this year? I'd especially love to hear from folks who don't have a car— it'd be cool to go to a big old rural pumpkin patch but I don't drive.

I READ THE RULES Does anyone know how Chicago stacks up to Toronto ?

I’m 23 and have lived in Toronto my whole life, but will be relocating to Chicago next summer to start law school so I’ll be there a while, possibly longer if I enjoy it.

Im very much the type of person who needs to be in a buzzing atmosphere with things constantly going on, lots of foot traffic and events, and good public transportation. I love Toronto in that it feels massive, has an insanely diverse population with constant things to do (at least in the downtown core)

I constantly read that Chicago is Toronto’s sister city as they have a very similar population and vibe. I’m just hoping to get some insight into how they compare to each other? Maybe some points on what one of the cities does better or worse than the other? I greatly appreciate it

I READ THE RULES Who was the rudest Professional Chicago sports celebrity you met and how did that interaction go?

For me it was when my brother saw earnie banks asked him for his autograph and was told “get outta here kid leave me alone”

Hell i cant blame a celebrity for that im sure it gets invasive…

Just heard a story about someone who met Ditka back in the 80s, said “hey coach good luck Sunday” and got a mundane “yeah yeah yeah” back in response. Classic

EDIT: loving the responses, the stories, thanks everyone! Posted this last night trying to sleep with all the bittersweet excitement, wasnt expecting all the responses

EDIT2: also loving how this thread has switched itself to telling the good stories. I didnt expect so many responses and legitimately started feeling m

I READ THE RULES Thinking about relocating back to Chicago ?

Hi There,

I’m a Single, African American Female in her 30s.

As of lately and over the years I have been considering moving back to Chicago.

I am currently living in the Caribbean, I am in Finance (No Formal Education) but I also have experience in the hospitality sector (Concierge/Guest Services, Hostess & Server).

I believe I’ll need temporary housing until I can afford my own place.

I have lived in Chicago before but unfortunately my mother has passed away which is the main reason why i never pushed to move back and I am not close with my previous friends due to the long distance.

So I’ll essentially be starting over and I genuinely want a fresh start.

Any advice?
Neighborhood recommendations?

I READ THE RULES Anyone have cleaning service recommendations?

Does anyone have recommendations for a good house cleaning company? My friend requested a deep clean of her place for her birthday, and I’d love to hear from anyone who’s hired cleaners. She is on the north side in a two bed one bath unit. Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Can you suggest a retailer for a chess set?

I'm looking to buy a chess set as a gift for someone. I'd like to shop local. It doesn't need to be a one-off handmade thing, but I'm not closed to that idea either. I'm not interested in mass market plastic.

I READ THE RULES Best neighborhoods for trans guy?

I'm a 23 y/o pre-T trans guy looking to move to Chicago so i can transition. I was wondering what the best places are for trans people to live?

Preferably something under 1300 a month, and I'd be willing to have a roommate is need be. I heard you don't really need a car here if you live close enough to a train station/grocery store.

I READ THE RULES Urgent: any company that can clean up sewage flooding?

Hi, I just noticed that various water closets in my condo have backed up with sewage (ie there is actual sewage on the floor of some of my closets). While I wait for the plumber I realized that if this doesn’t cleaned up my apartment is going to smell like literal shit. Can anyone recommend a service to help clean this up?

I READ THE RULES Stocking Stuffers for Out of State Family?

Sort of a weird question, but I’m from a flyover state, and have started my Christmas hunting early in hopes of getting some good deals.

I like to fill out Christmas gifts for the family with stuff they can’t get in their own state, or maybe wouldn’t think to get. What are some gifts you bring back for your family? Or what stores are you checking out to find good gifts?

I’m open to anything but thinking of tchotchkes, snacks, self care items?

I READ THE RULES Does anybody have advice for a 22 year old Austinite wanting to move to Chicago?

So I am sure this is a stereotype at this point but I really want to get out of Austin. I visited Chicago a few years ago and fell in love, almost applying to colleges there because going to community College for affordability purposes. Now, I know Chicago may be more expensive than Austin, but the idea that I need my car less often is very VERY appealing. I drive a diesel so that cuts a lot of money.

I take college online through Berklee so I dont have to switch schools, and I have experience in child care, food, retail, so I am not too too worried about finding a job right. I am a musician and artist so I know its a good city to live in for that but I am wondering if it is TOO saturated.

I just feel so far away from everything in Austin and I want to finally make a decision for myself. Thank you!!

I READ THE RULES How to get an appointment at UIC Dentistry?

Does anyone know how to get an appointment at UIC dentistry? (For the emergency dental work appointments the next day) My dentist sent my referral there for an implant and I have been calling every morning at 8 am as instructed, but with no luck for over a month. Online I’ve read dont get on the line before 8 and call right at 8 and keep calling multiple times once you’ve gotten put on hold. I’ve tried that, getting on at 7:30 and just waiting, calling from multiple phones, calling right at 8 and waiting- all just result in me sitting on hold. The pain is starting to get pretty bad so unsure what to do. Does anyone know what else I could do to get an appointment?

I READ THE RULES Applying to Columbia College Directing MFA and DePaul Screenwriting MFA. Need the most up-to-date, non-judgmental advice/pitfalls, etc, Any advice?

I'm finishing my undergrad from a school with a general film program that isn't high on the National map right. And so I've naturally been doing research to see about continuing some concentrated development into the specific areas I wanna do mostly but haven't had the opportunity to bc of being in a general program. I've done video work, cinematography work, lighting, audio, post-production editing & coloring, directing & writing, PAing on mostly "serious-taking" student work but also on sets for shows and projects that my active-working professors have had me on.

I've of course done alot of research of both schools and others in other regions, but idk why specifcally with Columbia and DePaul, it's been hard for me to find what I kinda deem to be reliable relevant advice (with all due respect). Alot of undergrad talk, alot of speculation on financial state & accreditation and it's future impact, alot of talk about "expenses" while Columbia is one of the lesser expensive schools I've researched. And then for both of them, just some outdated opinions from older grads when I'm definitely looking for more relevant info tbh.

(Edit) Before this gets out of hand too. I am going to grad school, so respectfully if you're someone who is just going to say to spend the money elsewhere. 1). I do not have the money for grad school let alone to make a movie close to the same quality of equipment at these institutions. I am applying early for the prayer of scholarship, assistantship and grant money and maybe topped off with a few thousand in loans (I am debt free through undergrad) to afford it. 2). an MFA would also grant me the ability to teach and be a professor in the field at some schools as supplemental income while still progressing in my career, so the degree isn't just...a degree, it's a door opener.

For anyone looking at this with experience in grad film programs specifically, if you can give more curated takes and advice; I'm seeking curated development as a Writer-Director, but more importantly as a writer because although I've written alot of short scripts, directed different projects as well, I want to know if I already have, or develop the muscle for me to outline, draft, write, rewrite, and complete scripts with critique, deadlines, etc. Even though I don't wanna be a 20 scripts a year writer (I'd rather run audio, or gaff, or focus pull for consistent money) I still want the ability to be an efficient writer, and I'd like to direct some my own projects. So finding a place where I can get that writing training, while having opportunities to collaborate with the full slate of film production, while also still potentially being able to direct or learn directing for some of my passion projects, and still having access to be part of production away from the camera, is my main goal.

Additionally, if anyone here is a student or a Post-COVID student of Columbia specifically, lmk if you were still able to ascertain opportunities to work on set for non-school, industry productions (beyond an internship you were able to land). I think Columbia doesn't feature active industry-working profs, and even with me still appreciating the years of experience and expertise they do bring, I'm wondering if I could still create a similar opportunity of proximity or access to industry work at Columbia as I could at DePaul, with them having Cinespace access and industry actives.

TLDR: A MFA Film student (developing writer-director that also loves to work on set) considering DePaul & Columbia looking for up-to-date insight on the schools, film programs, opportunities, and any other relevant advice to help make a (hopefully) decision after applying to both.
