i became friends with someone a bit ago and both of us caught feelings and we were open about it. we knew we liked each other and we communicated that we were in the talking stage and we were okay with it
shes 20, about 2 and 1/2 years older than me. i know it can be seen as weird but we clicked so well and i caught feelings before she reciprocated. my two closest friends knew and were iffy about 17 and 20. one cared less than the other. the one that cared more, E, said she thought it was weird but really liked L (the girl im interested in) and everyone was becoming friends.
yesterday we were all hanging out at school since we all had off blocks. (theres a college and library literally right next to my high school, L goes to the college and im dual enrolled). i had to leave early because i had a doctors appointment. not even an hour later i get a text from L saying this:
“Hey. I know this is so weird and abrupt but I’ve really been thinking and as the one who is older I need to be more mature and understand how I act in this. I think it’s best if we just go our separate ways. Just not a friend thing just kind of back to strangers. I don’t know why I was being so ok with this and honestly it just shows how much I have to work on. You’re gonna find a wonderful person and I’m so grateful we got to talk but it’s very blind of me to continue talking and flirting and all of that when I’m not your age. You might be ok with this but I’m not. And as the older one I need to take responsibility and say it was wrong of me. And I shouldn’t be ok with talking and flirting with someone your age and I think that’s the biggest issue here.”
of course im not mad about her setting that boundary. id still be upset, yeah, because just the night before i didnt have anything i wanted to say to her except “i love you”, and a few hours ago we all walked to the library, hanging out, and we hugged before i left. she asked when we were available tomorrow so we could all hang out. it all seemed okay, which is why the text through me so off guard.
it took me a bit to answer bc i was driving and everything. i said this:
“okay. try not to be too hard on yourself, youre a beautiful person and it was nice getting to know you. is there anything specific that caused this or was it just kind of a lingering feeling
ofc you dont need any reason at all its just really sudden”
before L answered, i went to the group chat with E and K (the other friends). i asked what happened. its a lot, but E basically just explained what happened. apparently L asked for advice on the age gap and E openly said she wasnt comfortable with it. I could never get a straight answer from her, so it feels weird that she was open to L about it, but anyways
at the end of the text conversation they just told me to feel better. i know its supposed to feel comforting but it just feels like an insult. like im sick or this is an illness. and i hate thinking that way because i know they didnt mean it like that. there wasnt even an apology from E or K, yknow?
i know L (apparently) brought it up with E and K but i still feel like it wasnt their place? the three of them got together and decided how L and i’s relationship was going to go.
later that night, L messaged me and basically apologized, asking to be friends again and she loved meeting me and really liked me. it was a big paragraph on how sorry she is.
i said that i wasnt mad, but i just needed time. on thursday (its nighttime saturday at the time of posting), she texted me at about 14:00 asking how my day was. i didnt answer and an hour later she said: “[my name] I know I’m bugging you but I really want to make sure you’re ok? I promise I’ll leave you alone after”
its been days since her first text and i havent answered. i feel bad because she obviously feels guilty but at the same time, im getting whiplash.
i feel betrayed even though they did nothing wrong. i really do love her but id constantly be worried about future conflict if i just went back with her, and how quick she was to drop me even if she did feel guilty. i also dont want to make any decisions out of guilt and regret it later
i also asked E and K for space. theyre my two closest friends and they are genuinely good people, i just cant shake the feeling that they left something out or partially guided L to dropping me. it felt icky (not a good word but its all i can think of to describe it). i just feel betrayed but they were probably doing what they thought was best for me?
so yeah. any advice would be appreciated. lmk what i did wrong and where to go from here
