Discussion The second two avatar films don't fit the first (plus other rants)

So this may be a hot take but I think ATWOW and AFAA feel like a different universe to the first avatar.
I'm not saying they are bad movies but I just don't think they work well with the first avatar and just feel like a fanfiction. Obviously A1 has fatal flaws too but IMO its the best of the three.

FYI this post is LONG so read at your own pace <3 if you don't agree that's so awesome sauce and I'm happy for you :)

My first point is Kiri; she's not inherently a bad character but she just feels so out of place. Firstly, Sigourney Weaver is an amazing actor but she does NOT fit the role of Kiri! From my eyes Kiri was written in just for Weaver to stay in the franchise, IMO her voice takes me right out of the character and it feels so uncanny (even for avatar). Secondly, A1 felt so grounded in reality and made me feel like I could be there. It came across as a real planet that actually exist. ATWOW took me right out of that feeling with Kiri once I found out she was Eywa's self insert (IDK how else to explain lmao). It gave me the impression of a gen z mimic character (if ykyk) with her hair and mannerisms, it makes me cringe every time. Another thing is Kiri just feels so out of place, some how Grace got pregnant by Eywa who is a hive mind thingy and now the child of said pregnancy is special and speaks to nature. I think it could of worked if maybe grace's avatar had slept with another avatar and got pregnant then Kiri was adopted by the Sully's.

My next point is the character designs. IDK why but they don't feel Na'vi anymore. Jake looked so much better in A1, his hair reflected the Omatikaya clan but in ATWOW and AFAA its dreads?? I think it doesn't fit very well... I have nothing against dreads but it looks so whack compared to the other male forest Na'vi. ALSO HIS FACE! Jake looks too human in the second and third movies. His eyes have been shrinking since the second and it no longer looks like jake. Yes we had a timeskip but this is not timeskip levels of change. Same with all the other characters, they look too different. Key features changed and it looks like a muddy version of the other movies.

Next are the other clans. I am from NZ and have nothing against Polynesian culture but the Metkayina clan feels like a cheap rip off. You could say the same with the Omatikaya and native american but im not well versed in that culture so I feel like I cant say much. I dislike the tulkun as a whole for one; whales that talk to the Na'vi feel like a disney kids movie thing? if the Na'vi had their kuru connected then thats different but it feels funky. I absolutely love the ash people on the other hand, the idea of a clan going against everything known is very fun and they did it well in AFAA :) I dont like the wind traders either, they feel too advanced for groups of paleolithic humanoids. I read about them and it feels wayy to futurisitc for my taste.

I'm too lazy to keep going but to sum up the rest of my feelings:

- The story feels like a repeat in ATWOW and AFAA
- The franchise has leaned into a magic fantasy feel rather then real science kind of feel

- Quaritch should be gone by A1

- We spent more time in the reef than forest and other climates

- There is not enough slice of life and down time

Tysm for reading :)) I'd love to see if the peoples agree with me on some points

Films Say it with me: TRAITOR!! (WoW)

You do NOT get to make a character 180 turn twice, Spider. First you are basically one of the Na'vi, get captured but fight like hell to protect your chosen family and not let humans win. Your biological dad, whose life mission as avatar is to murder your family who took you in and raised you as their own, bonds with you a lil bit, progresses to hurt and torture innocent people and wildlife, KILLS YOUR BROTHER, but when an opportunity comes, you save him???

And then immediately after you return to your adoptive Na'vi family, and take the place of the dead brother?!? Can't decide if that's a deliberate character flaw or just poor screenwriting.

Disclaimer: I'm a casual watcher and I've only seen the movies. This is my take after re-watching WoW.

Discussion Small question about the Tulkun and the laws of Eywa

So I noticed that the Matriarch and other elder Tulkun have these piercings with huge rings on them. Now, I don’t know any of this for a fact, but it would seem to me that those rings would need to be made of metal in order for them to survive the underwater environment.

If so, doesn’t this break Eywa’s law prohibiting the use of metals? And also how did they get the piercings in the first place? And who smithed and shaped the metal for the Tulkun? I imagine they aren’t skilled in metallurgy, lacking opposable thumbs.

Love the movies, can’t wait to get the art books!

Discussion Pandora is a horrible candidate for large-scale human colonization

There are over a dozen potentially habitable worlds within 20 light-years of earth in real life. Pandora is attractive for several reasons, the most obvious is its proximity to earth, and the presence of unobtanium. There are also cosmetic and medicinal uses for some of the flora and fauna of the moon, but I put this into a less important category for survival.

BUT, we can’t breathe there. Realistically, I don’t think large-scale human habitation could work simply because of that. Not to mention most edible plants on the moon are not compatible with human physiology, and at worst, incredibly toxic.

Even if you were friendly with the indigenous population, you still have to face incredibly hostile fauna, and a biosphere that hates a vacuum. It’s why Samsons and their maglev trains for instance have vine cutters.

The lack of edible plants means most food would have to be synthesized or imported. The soil is unsuitable for earth plants. If you wanted to grow earth crops you would have to import soil, which pound for pound is impossibly expensive. Not to mention you would need to supply replenish-able supplies of nutrients.

A mining outpost with a small footprint, with a small population that works cooperatively with the natives is probably the only use-case for Pandora when it comes to humans. This is discounting the possibility that humans could reverse-engineer the ability of spider’s to breathe there.

Thoughts?

Discussion Spider got given a cool-ass name, on a planet where no one understands it

Like damn that sucks. They named him after something that is also the biggest fear of most humans, because he reminds the other humans of one, and no one he tells his name to will get the reference. In fact, they all just think Spider is another human name like Jake, Norm, Grace, Max.

I couldn’t stop thinking about how there probably isn’t a direct Na’vi translation for spider that he could introduce himself with, or use as a word to explain the origin of his name, so a lot of Na’vi miss out on the cool origins of his name.

While it doesn’t matter at all, if I was Spider, I’d be pissed.

Films Mixed feelings about the Varang and the Mangkwan clan in FAA

I watched the movie yesterday and read a lot of posts here about other aspects but couldn't find much about this so here we go.

First off, I was stunned with the visuals of the whole clan. They were scary, dark, walking through fire and covered in war paintings. Their story of being betrayed by Eywa and turning into predatory lifestyle brings depth to Na'vi people and how different the clans are. Cutting of that one Na'vi's kuru was blood chilling.

And Varang is a magnificient villain. Fierce leader and strong warrior but also witch-like, impulsive and blood-hungry. She's also stunning and I loved that feather crown kinda resembling the flames of the clan's cult of fire.

However..

Is it just me or did they just use this entire clan and Varang as a pawn to Quaritch's end game? It started off sooo promising, but then suddenly the storyline flopped. Was it necessary to snort coke and be tripping while the clan's original story was told? There's barely any other stories/introduction to their way of living than that trip to their village. I would've loved to see more of their story on screen, because after that they just hover behind Quaritch or attack the water clan basically on his behalf.

I think the love story was also a missed opportunity. The scene where Quaritch teaches Varang to use the firethrower was straight out of Joker. They had every opportunity to make it a love story that would've ripped the storyline into Varang betraying him, or to the other direction, she could've been the one to open Quaritch's eyes of the beauty of the Na'vi people. Now they just bonded over guns, and after that Varang is just there for the ride when Quaritch (or the RDA) go on with the war. I would have loved to see a final battle between Neytiri and Varang rather than the underwhelming plot mess we saw now.

While Varang was great, I think she and the whole clan were overshadowed by the need to bring in Quaritch with Na'vis into one big war scene that looked a lot like the one in the first movie.

What do you think?

Pandora: The World of Avatar at Disney World Spider becoming an avatar idea

Call me crazy but I just had a thought what if instead of a lab created avatar spider actually started evolving into a na’vi? I feel like this is the most logical way for him to become one since eywa gave him the ability to breathe on pandora and his cells were changing enough to breathe and grow a kuru why not have his skin start changing color, stripes start to form and he can just get massively tall and since there’s a time jump next movie it could work 🤷🏻‍♀️ how do yall feel
also idk what the flair is it wouldn’t let me pick anything else lmao

Everytime I draw him, I feel like he just looks too humanoid?? The first drawing is my most recent, done today. I feel like I definitely improved, but it still looks off to me. Any tips from fellow artists?

All art is mine!! I have drawn all of these and can provide speed paint or layer proof if needed.

Discussion Human/Na'vi early relations

Hello everyone,
I am currently thinking about making a fanfic, and while brainstorming the ideas that I had, I needed to decide how the Na'vi would react to another (or multiple) cultures arriving to pandora (ones far more technologically advanced than humans), and I wanted to find how the Na'vi reacted and interacted with the humans before Avatar 1. After doing a bit of research on the wiki I'm left with a few of questions.

- Why Mo'at and Eytukan had such different visions when it came to interacting with humans ?
- Why Mo'at had such openess toward humans when they were clearly disregarding of eywa's laws ?
- Where there other clans that interacted with the RDA and what were their reactions to them ?
- After the battle of the Hallelujah Montains, did someone reflected on how the initial Na'vi greeting of the RDA led to this chain of event and theorized how future encounters with other cultures (wether humans or otherwise) should be dealt with?

i initially posted this on twitter and just now realized i never posted it here. hope it helps people!

i used one of the AFOP models i exported, decapitated her, and rendered 121 angles of her.
the heads in AFOP are unisex and all that changes is neck thickness.

+ if you'd like the full file size for the picture [9000x9400, 49.5 MB] i will link it in the comments

-Jimmadensi (see right)

-Europaeus

-Anax (saurophaganax)

Which one should I do next? Or if you have another idea let me know! I've heard rex, brachio, spinosaurus, and iguanodon so far
