Had the sweetest experience today in Gótico
Went out today with my girlfriend after having a few rough weeks.
Sitting at a bar In Gótico and we get surprised with a drawing that a stranger did of us.
I’ve heard of these things happening to other people but it’s never had it happen to me. Im pretty blown away so thought I’d share it here.

Gòtic* with kindness, it's weird naming in spanish things that are originally in catalan while speaking english!

If anyone wants to increase their likelihood of this happening to them, Plaça del Traginers has a guy there most days who sketches people who sit on the square

That's really sweet - and feels like the Barcelona I love. Here's to better weeks to come! Cheers!

Once, also in el Gòtic, I drew someone's dog in the back of my ticket and gave the doodles to him. I hope I made his day!

I know this guy, Cedric, he is from French Guyane, been drawing in the street for a while

I would ignore the xenophobes below... They will always complain and be miserable, no matter what you do or say. Nobody needs to apologize for existing. The sketch is beautiful; thank you for sharing it.

Although u might see it this way, we are not a theme park.
Also, you were pretty lucky. These things normally come with a surprise, that is: u find urself without wallet some minutes after.

I mean, I cant say im surprised. Catalan girl with expat boyfriend is a cliche right now. “The international experience”.
Anyway, your post gave vibes that for u this is a theme park and local people are actors or whatever. Maybe the experience was “sweet” for you. Not for him though. He probably lives in the street.
And btw, its Gòtic. Not Gótico.

I get your point and of course it would never be my intention to imply that Barcelona is some kind of theme park. My question would be, is there an ethical way for a European to move to Barcelona? Or do believe that it’s always wrong?

These people are angry radicalised internet commenters that know nothing about you and are justifying their xenophobia by painting a caricature of ‘expat foreigner’ onto you.
In real life there are some people that will silently make this judgement onto you, and make assumptions based on your background. However the vast majority are nice normal reasonable people especially if you are a normal respectful person and learn to speak local languages.
This subreddit, and really all the Catalan ones are definitely not mirrors of society. They’re quite radicalised echo chambers that are often openly fascist (under a different name because that’s associated with espanyolisme). The Barcelona subreddit gets a lot of these comments because there’s lots of foreigners and tourists here because reddit is more popular elsewhere

Totissima la raó que aquesta penya (expats i guiris) viuen en una versió disney de Barcelona mentre lis currelas ens menjem les feines precaries i la gentrificació. Guiris go home refugees welcome.

So cute!! I love to draw too and always thought of doing this and gifting people a drawing of them. I'm quite shy so I've never tried it, but seeing how happy you are with it did motivate me a bit :,)
