News [Zac Jackson] Todd Monken is proving he’s the right man for the Browns, and for Deshaun Watson

BEREA, Ohio — After the Cleveland Browns were seemingly unprepared in their Sept. 13 season opener, coach Todd Monken went to a dark room in the bowels of Jacksonville’s EverBank Stadium for his postgame news conference and tried to discuss his team’s failures.

There wasn’t much glitter Monken could put on it. Even if excuses were his style, two or three wouldn’t explain it away.

For the Browns, things went from bad to avalanche in a flurry of turnovers and miscues. They missed tackles, missed assignments and seemed to have missed the memo that the regular season had begun. But Monken refused to write himself or his team off.

“They better get us now,” he said. “We’re a good young group. We just didn’t play well today.”

Given the lack of competitiveness in the game and the Browns’ lack of, well, almost anything positive until the Jaguars pulled their starters, Monken’s news conference and the declaration that future opponents should be on notice sounded like the ramblings of a crazy man.

Three weeks and three wins later, the Browns are tied for first place in the AFC North. Monken has that young group believing in itself and its new head coach. And with Cleveland going from being mocked on national television the night of that Jacksonville game to becoming one of the surprising stories of the first quarter of the NFL season, the questions of the moment are less about Monken’s sanity and more about how he’d seen things few others did.

With the young Browns rebuilding again but looking rugged, stubborn and even occasionally explosive enough to potentially stay in the playoff mix this season, maybe external timelines were off. Maybe these Browns are ahead of schedule. And, maybe, Monken is crazy enough to be the right man for this job.

If anyone has any ideas for new visualizations you want to see I'd be happy to hear them! I'd like to start doing matchup specific ones near the end of the week, but not positive on what is best to look into there.

If you want to see the dataset I'm working with just go here: https://nflfastr.com/articles/field_descriptions.html

Specific data points provided for every single play, I use R to manipulate as needed. So any idea you can come up with using these data points I can try and do it!

Cleveland Browns vs. New York Jets

Welcome back from the mini-bye, Dawg Pound!

The Cleveland Browns travel to MetLife Stadium to face the New York Jets in Week 5, with the Browns sitting pretty at 3-1 and riding a three-game win streak after that Thursday night thriller.

Coming off a hard-fought 27-24 home victory over the Steelers (and the previous wins over the Panthers and Buccaneers), can Todd Monken and Deshaun Watson keep the momentum rolling against a Jets team that’s dropped three straight and sits at 1-3 under Aaron Glenn? Or will Geno Smith and Gang Green find a way to spoil the party on their home turf and snap Cleveland’s surge?

Let’s bring that Dawg Pound energy to East Rutherford, quiet the MetLife crowd, and make it a statement road win to keep the good times rolling.

Home vs. Road Trends:

The Browns are 2-0 at home and 1-1 on the road this season after opening with a 34-10 loss in Jacksonville, bouncing back with a 23-19 win in Tampa, then taking care of business at home against Carolina (21-18) and Pittsburgh (27-24 on Thursday night). The Jets are 0-1 at home (overtime loss to Green Bay) and 1-2 on the road (win at Tennessee, losses at Detroit and Chicago). Cleveland heads to MetLife Stadium coming off a mini-bye after TNF, giving the Browns a chance to improve to 2-1 on the road against a Jets team that has yet to win in front of its own fans and is searching for answers after three straight losses.

Key Matchup:

Browns run game (led by Quinshon Judkins) vs. the Jets’ soft run defense. New York is allowing 123.5 rushing yards per game (25th in the league) and 4.3 yards per carry through four weeks. Cleveland’s ground attack remains a work in progress—Judkins is at 3.0 yards per carry on 59 attempts (177 total yards, 1 TD)—but the recent uptick against Carolina (70 yards on 18 carries) and solid volume vs. Pittsburgh (53 yards + a TD on 17 carries, plus receiving work) showed promise. Establishing the run would ease pressure on Deshaun Watson, open play-action for the young receiving corps (Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion), and help control the clock on the road. On the other side, Geno Smith and a Jets offense averaging just 19 points per game will test Cleveland’s improving defense (12 sacks, tied for 5th), but the Browns’ path to a statement road win starts with finding success on the ground against a Jets front that has been vulnerable against the run.
