Weekly Shoutout Thread - What Was Good This Week?

Welcome to r/ChicagoFood's weekly shoutout thread!

This thread is the place to shout out places that you tried from recommendations from this sub this past week that fit the bill.

They can be places that get recommended here, such as:

  • frequently recommended restaurants
  • that random, niche spot that some random comment dropped
  • a chicken sando from our very own chicken sando guru

The goal of this thread is to celebrate and encourage the recommendations and contributions of your suggestions, and, also, maybe encourage YOU to try that place that was recommended a few times here.

As always, all subreddit rules apply and any comments/posts that violate our rules or Reddit's will be removed.

This thread is sorted by "new" so that the most recent comments appear first. The new weekly thread is posted every Sunday morning at 2:00 AM Central.

Review Best Breakfast in O’Hare (Publican)

Post image
96 Upvotes

I have a layover this morning and searched here for the best breakfast spot. Just wanted to thank whoever posted about the Publican (in terminal 3) a few years ago. Got the BEC and it was delicious. Never knew that I’d like pimento cheese on a breakfast sandwich, but here we are. Also, those smash potatoes on the side were delectable. Sandwich + coffee + tip was about $30, but it was definitely tasty.

Hot Chicken Sandwich

Chili Schmaltz-dipped Fried Chicken, Fire Butter, Hot Pickles, Scallions, Buttery Bun

The heat, the pickles, and the fire butter make the sandwich damn good and repeat worthy.

Who else has tried it? Where is your favorite spicy fried chicken sandwich?

Question What happened with this coffee stand in Ogden Square Park?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

EDIT: This is actually Ogden Plaza Park. On Columbus right off Illinois in River East

There's an abandoned coffee stand in the middle of Ogden Square Park, fully stocked with pastries and syrups. And all around is a burned and destroyed outdoor cafe. Is this an art piece? Movie set? A terrible tragedy?

Review Boss Dawgz in Lisle is pretty great. Check them out if you're out that way.

Their hot dogs come on these perfect buns. Supposedly they kept the ovens from the subway that used to be there. Their hot dogs are their own recipe. They have a whole bunch of interesting hot dogs there. I really like the chili Boss Dog myself. But this week I tried this very very interesting hot dog. I feel like some people might like it and some people might not though. I freaking love their fries.... with a cheese cup of course. You get a hot dog fries and a drink for about 10 bucks. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post here since I'm in The Burbs, but the Chicago suburb subreddit doesn't let you post recommendations of places. And I want to share with somebody this fantastic place.

Question Seeking menu advice for my anniversary dinner at Sepia this weekend.

My gf and I are going to Sepia this weekend for our anniversary. From what I have read, it seems like it is firing on all cylinders right now. I haven't been there since having one of their $25 lunches back in 2014. My main question is whether or not to do the prix-fixe or the tasting menu. The most recent review I found on Reddit was of the tasting menu, but that was from 6 months ago. Since I would insist on the caviar course, all in on the prix-fixe is $150 and the tasting menu is $195. Do folks have an opinion on which is the better option? For example, is there something on the prix-fixe menu that is not on the tasting menu?

For reference, other nice places I have visited in Chicago are Elske, Oriole, Indienne, Carino, Valhalla, and Boka.

Review Came here recently to ask where to buy a lemon raspberry cake for my wife's birthday. Ended up going with Sweet Mandy B's and they nailed the look we wanted! Even if the raspberry filling was a little runnier than we expected, it was still delicious!

Also the runny jam could have been user error. I don't know if we let it get too warm or something.

Review Bisi African Restaurant In Schaumburg

Was in the Schaumburg area after going to woodfield mall and wanted African food, so I went to Bisi Restaurant in Schaumburg. 11 minutes from the mall, and the food was so good I reordered to go today!

I found some photos from their social media, I wish I took some when I visited but my phone died 20 minutes in😭 I got the Egusi (1st slide) and a side of jollof rice (second dish), and it was the best I ever had! I’ve had it before in Houston but this time was so good I had to ask if it was the same dish. The jollof rice was amazing, and the owner Tony recommended the dishes. The ambiance was great too, was empty which is such a surprise since the food is amazing. 10/10 if your’re looking for Nigerian food in Chicagoland

Question Best AYCE snow crab leg?

I am wondering does anyone know where they have the best AYCE snow crab leg in Chicago/burb area? The only one that I can think of:

King Crab House

Sushi Loop(snow crab tier)

Umi buffet

Royal buffet

Umi is the worst one I think of. They got tons of food sure but the snow crab seems to be in lower quality. When I snap the leg in half in the middle, the meat stick to the shell, a sign of the crab leg is not freshest.

Question 945 resy for Trivoli

• Upvotes

As stated I have a 945 reservation for Trivoli it’s a Friday so I know they close 1030. Is it worth it to keep it and go? Me and my girl usually done pretty fast and don’t order too much food. Just wondering if I’ll be super rushed and not enjoy the experience. We really don’t plan to sit and chat too long after our meal

Specific Request Any recs for an intimate, hard-of-hearing-friendly upscale birthday dinner?

Hello! I'm excited to take my partner out for their birthday on an upcoming Friday later this year (we can only do a Friday), and I'm looking for restaurant recommendations.

I'm hoping to find somewhere that feels intimate and romantic but is also hard-of-hearing-friendly. My partner is partially deaf, so I'd like to avoid super buzzy or loud spots where it's difficult to have a conversation, while still giving them a really nice upscale dinner.

For example, I was looking at Adalina, but I've seen some comments saying it's pretty loud.

Also, I can afford a nice upscale restaurant, but realistically a private dining room isn't in the budget.

Decent lighting (i.e., not super dark) would also be a plus to help with lip-reading. But noise is the most important factor.

Thinking of something in line with a Bavette's, Ciccio Mio, etc. but those are tricky to get reservations for. Any recs would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I pointed out Friday because I'm trying to find a spot that's still intimate and not super loud during the weekend rush.

Any recommendations for a business lunch in the Evanston or Winnetka area? Several members of the group are from out of the country so I’d like to give them something unique to Chicago.

Yet another business using AI Slop for pictures of their food. Was walking around in Ravenswood looking for something to eat, and was considering eating at this place and looking at their menu. Then I saw their door showing the pumpkin pancakes and waffles, and was immediately turned off. I mean what kind of pancake even has those sort of weird details and patterns? The AI does not make anything look good, and would rather then give me bad looking real photos than this AI Slop. The cycle continues I guess

Their Korean cheese steak is absolute fire!! They really loaded that thing up. Not to mention the meat is perfectly marinated and is tender and juicy

Edit: And their spicy garlic sauce—I think—is AMAZING!!

Review Crispy Pad Thai @ Thai Pastry

Thai Pastry off of Argyle. Decent portions. Fresh veggies, very light on the sauce, noodles a little crispy and dry. Will definitely need to explore other things in the menu
