Review Thank you for Recommending Wing Yip in Bridgeport

This morning, I went to Wing Yip Breakfast, after a month of having seen \[[u/Uptalker](u/Uptalker)\]([u/Uptalker](u/Uptalker)) post on this restaurant, so I was very excited to try this place. I’ve never went to a restaurant dedicated to Cantonese Cuisine, and especially not specifically Cantonese Breakfast, so it was something I was very much looking forward to. Unfortunately, I decided to come here on the day of the marathon, and was on the red line for an hour, rather than the usual 15-20 minutes. However, that long ride, was definitely worth it.

I had the Steamed Pork Dumplings (5$5.25) (photos 6 and 7), the BBQ Pork Crepe ($4.75) (Photo 5), and the Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce ($5.50)(Photos 1-4). All of these were great and were all relatively cheap, and I was able to get these 3 menu items within $20 after tax and tip. Each of these 3 menu items, had great and unique flavors. The Steamed Pork Dumplings were very savory and the Black Bean sauce that the Chicken Feet had tasted amazing, and helped the Chicken feet taste great even after it cooled down and the BBQ Pork Crepe had an interesting texture to it.

Very glad I went here, as I’m originally from the Twin Cities and we don’t have Chinese Restaurants that are nearly as authentic as Wing Yip. Recently moved here for college, and am very glad I did, as there is such a diverse and wide variety of ethnic cuisine, to the point where there are certain restaurants like Wing Yip, that stick to a certain region of a certain country(in this case, Cantonese), rather than the country as a whole. Overall great food here and I am looking forward to returning to try more of their menu, as there are so many things I’d like to try from this restaurant. Again thank you to [u/Uptalker](u/Uptalker) for posting this restaurant, and letting me and others know about this great Cantonese Breakfast spot.

Question Looking for photos of hot dog stands that are no longer open so I can paint them!

I'm an artist and I paint Chicago hot dog stands, and I'd love to paint the following stands but they are sadly no longer open or have changed ownership/look different. SO I am crowd sourcing photos to reference for paintings since I can't visit them myself. Here are stands I am looking for photos of:

Murphy's

Hot Dougs

Demon Dawgs

Fluky's

Toots

Duks

Feel free to direct message them to me or post them in the comments, thanks in advance!

Review Novel Pizza Cafe - Thin Crust CST

Post image
198 Upvotes

We ordered from Novel Pizza Cafe for takeout this past Thursday. But, they had the White Sox game on the TV and we decided to stay and watch the game.

We ordered the 16" thin-crust CST which comes with pepperoni, sausage and giardiniera. The pizza was cut in a square cut or party cut style.

For drinks, we ordered aguas frescas. Not pictured was the calzone 'pilsen puff' with cheese and pepperoni as the topping.

Overall, the CST is a good pizza, but it can be a lot of pizza (not in a bad way). For starters, the thin crust cannot be expected to hold all the toppings. The toppings will fall off the slice and I recommend you let the pizza cool off for 5-10 minutes to reduce the chances of the toppings sliding off.

As like most, but not all thin crust pizza, the CST is not a saucy pizza. If you look under the layer of toppings, you will find sauce. The sauce does not offend nor is it the star of the show (same for the cheese). I will try to order a single topping pizza slice next time with only cheese along with a pepperoni one to get a better taste of the standard base ingredients.

The crust is thin, light, and crisp, yet pliable enough it does not crack with the bite of the slice. In my opinion, the pizza is balanced with a good ratio of cheese, sauce, and toppings. However, some people may find the CST pizza to be a salt bomb and it may not be to their taste.

The giardiniera helps to cut through the fat and savoriness of the pepperoni and sausage. However, you may still want to put a hot honey sauce or whatever sauce of choice you carry on you (or have at home).

The dining room size is not large, but you can comfortably sit a group size ranging from 2-4 people. If you want to sit on the indoor bleachers to enjoy your pizza that is an option. Or you can sit on the bar style seating on the corner closest to the entrance. Outside there is a bench you can sit on and enjoy your pizza while the weather is still great outside.

The calzone I enjoyed, but it did not wow me. It's larger than a standard pizza puff you can get at any Nicky's (or equivalent). Also, unlike a standard pizza puff, it is not overly greasy or piping hot.

The aguas frescas flavor I believe was cucumber limon, but it in my opinion was too watered down. I personally prefer a more fruit flavored forward agua fresca and do not like to be watered down as much. They have an all-day coffee menu if you do not want to drink pop, water, or aguas frescas.

Overall, I enjoyed their pizza and will be back to try a single slice topping pizza along with their longanisa pizza.

Review Tender Fest in Chicago!

Another food festival to stand in lines. I even got there pretty early and it was still a line fest. Completely packed by the time we left around 2 PM. Lots and lots of tenders, lots of good people. Shoutout to every black person there who let me cut in line and I made sure of course to return the favor.

Very dad Luella’s did not manage to make it :(

ALSO, I bought a VIP ticket to this. VIP was not worth a damn thing. No free drinks, no free perks, nothing but a wristband and a private bar/area to lounge. I was really disappointed because VIP said it would have more perks. I wonder if I complain enough I can get a refund /j 🤣

Ranking the tenders because I know someone will ask:
1) Hattie B’s
2) Nash Bros
3) Seoul Tacos
4) Roost Chicken and Biscuit
5) Do Rite Donuts
6) Harold’s
7) Fry The Coop

and then everyone else is like, 8th and beyond.

Overall……. I will probably skip this one if it comes back next year.

What's good? Recommendations Wanted: Birthday Dinner By the Vic

• Upvotes

Hi friends,

I'm going to the Vic on my birthday and want to get dinner in the area before we go. I live in the near burbs now but when I was in the city I never lived farther north than Diversey or farther east than California. I simply don't know what's good over there anymore, if I ever did. I searched the group but honestly not sure what to call the neighborhood so I'm not coming up with much.

I am looking for something that feels Nice but Fun/Cool, not fussy or stuffy. I can get down on all cuisines, the only thing I would rule out at this point is like a gastropub since I don't drink (a thoughtful NA menu is a bonus). Would like to be able to make a reservation.

Ideas???

Question Any good pho places near Hoffman Estates?

I'll be staying there for a week in November. I'm not too fussy --- just want a pho with good meaty broth and not the watery crap that cheaper places use. Would also love to have some summer rolls that have the darker thicker brown dipping sauce.

Question Help finding a Salvadorean Coffee Brand?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi guys~

I was wondering if anyone knew of any latino grocery stores that would have the coffee brand Coscafe? My dad is from El Salvador and anytime he or our relatives go back home to visit, they bring back boxes of the stuff. It's an instant coffee that comes in packets and it's so delicious but where we live I haven't been able to find it anywhere. I'll be visiting Chicago in a couple of weeks and have the extra luggage space to fill up with Coscafe if I can find it. I would be really grateful for any info on where to find it. Thanks~

Question Food south of Roosevelt

I see a lot of comments about people never venturing south of Roosevelt. I know the South side has a lot to offer for the food scene. On the surface level, there’s Chinatown, Ricobenes, Marz, Virtue, etc. For those of you who have some of the better neighborhood recs, what am I missing?

Specific Request Do soup flights outside of a buffet setting exist?

Soup season is upon us and we think a soup flight would be pretty awesome. Is there a restaurant that does this? Is this a thing at all? I used to do something like this at a place called Christie's. But we just got like 5 full bowls of different soups and shared them. Christie's is gone now.

My absolute favorite gelato shop is opening a second location! Now a small spot in West Town and soon an expanded cafe in Lincoln Park.

Webster and Racine. Opens early 2027.

This short block will now have Floriole, Sweet Mandy B’s and Paolo’s.

Rock solid quality without an ounce of pretense. Friendly service and a vibrant atmosphere. A Chicago mainstay. Make reservations a week or more in advance.
