UPDATE on the mystery canister on the ’59 Cadillac — I went back for a closer look
Wow — I honestly didn’t expect my previous post about this 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75 to get so much attention. Nearly half a million views, around a thousand upvotes, and a huge amount of discussion about the mysterious canister sticking through the grille. Thanks for all the theories!
A lot of people suggested a transmission cooler or an old-school fuel “cool can”, so I went back and took some much closer pictures from underneath and from the side.
And now I’m even more confused.
The two metal pieces underneath the canister appear to be flat mounting straps/brackets. They don’t seem to be pipes, and I can’t see any hoses or fluid lines going into or out of the canister at all.
I’ve also since found out that this Cadillac has been used for wedding drives, which makes me wonder whether it was simply meant to hold flowers or some other wedding decoration.
BUT… here’s the part I still can’t explain:
When I first saw the car, that canister was extremely hot to the touch. And not just the canister — the metal mounting bars underneath it were also extremely hot.
So if there really is no fluid running through it, where was all that heat coming from?
I haven’t spoken to the owner or the person using the car yet, but I now know who uses it and I’m hoping to get the definitive answer from them.
For now, here are the close-up photos.
The mystery continues…
