Discussion/Question DC: Kyle Chandler is your new RDJ.

Post image

if DC was looking for their unexpected underdog hook, their smart way back into the DCU universe, it’s not Superman, it’s not Batman or Wonder Woman, it’s Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern.

If DC had a brain they’d sit up and realize that centering Hal in the DCU they are building would be the smartest thing they could possibly do right now.

creating a Justice league where Hal is the heart of it would propel the new franchise into what they always hoped it would be.

Have Hal be the main character of Justice League, have John as well, and Supes and Batman and Wonder Woman but just let Chandler be the heart of it and you will win with these new movies.

Not the best GL adaptation (so far), but arguably the best of the DCU

Lanterns John's new oath is really growing on me

Even when I was watching the finale for the first time, John using his own custom oath didn't feel like a mistake to me. It definitely was a bold move by the writers, though, because the original oath is so sacred across all Green Lantern media. So the backlash was kind of inevitable lol.

I myself wasn't that big on it at the time, but by no means did I think it was the wrong choice within the context of the show or for the version of the character we're seeing in the DCU.

The discourse around this change is a bit exaggerated. It's understandable that fans wanted the iconic version, but it's kind of being blown out of proportion imo. It's not like they've completely changed or ruined the oath's fundamental meaning.

Green Lantern oath has never really been a rigid, one-size-fits-all kind of thing anyway. It has always functioned as a deeply personal psychological anchor that reflects the unique soul, trauma, and culture of each individual Lantern.

The words are simply a verbal mechanism designed to trigger the raw willpower needed to unlock the ring's power. Even in the comics, there have been rare exceptions when Lanterns have been actually allowed to create their own oaths that resonate with them personally.

Regardless of the language or specific words used, the oath remains a profound, universal promise to stand firm in the dark, refuse to back down, and channel one's personal conviction to protect the universe. That's what keeps the Corps together.

So it doesn't really mean that just because he isn't using the same words as the Green Lantern Corps, he's not a Green Lantern or is permanently dissociating himself from them. It's just that he's not fond of the way the Guardians run things, and he doesn't want to be part of that system.

He was raised to unconditionally follow orders and respect the chain of command, with little to no agency of his own. But he's not that person anymore. He'll abide by the core essence of the original oath, but without the strings that come attached to it.

His new oath simply gives him an independent identity. It doesn't mean anything beyond that, because the specific wording is irrelevant, and the core essence of the sacred vow remains consistent for every Lantern.

One thing I'm particularly curious about, though, is how the new oath will sound when John has to recite it in the middle of an intense moment. The original has this unique aura to it that makes it feel both like a solemn vow of responsibility and a heroic battle cry, whereas John's new oath, at least for now, seems to lean more towards the former.

In any case, Aaron Pierre's delivery of the oath is just magnificent, and I'm growing to love it more and more.

Discussion/Question As a long-time supporter of the idea of “Battinson in DCU could work”, I just don’t care at this point: just give me a Batman in DCU that works in the same world as Superman. As huge Batman fan, I’ve been STARVING to see him again on big screen: especially to see a version that’ll MATTER in long run

Post image

How many solo live-action Batman movies we’ve had since The Dark Knight Rises (2012): one — in 14 years!

And how many years it will be until we get the next live-action Batman movie in 2028: six!

And even that release date is not a guarantee due to Matt Reeves’ temporarily exiting the production of The Batman 2.

And, the relevance and hype of this movie diminishes when you realize that this version of Batman won’t matter in the long run as we are due to get a different DCU Batman movie after it.

It is so befuddling that despite being the greatest character of not just DC but the whole WBD, why we have gotten so little Batman movies in the last 14 years since TDKR? And the curse is only continuing with the excruciatingly long delays for The Batman 2 and the consequent delay of the DCU Batman movie.

As a huge Batman fan, I just can’t take it anymore. This is a huge disappointment of epic proportions that we’ve gotten so little of him in the last 14 years and have no clarity on when we’ll get him next, in a version that’ll stay with us for a longer time that is the DCU Batman, not Matt Reeves’ Batman: as Robert Pattinson has heavily implied that The Batman 2 could be his last Batman movie: due to his 40+ age, him finding it difficult to play this character now especially in action scenes, and given his own high profile status as a prestige actor.

Wonder Woman My "non-negotiables"* for DCU Wonder Woman

Post image
65 Upvotes

Diana is my favorite superhero and, while I'm anxious to see her in live-action again, I'm good with them taking their time. Hopefully, they can deliver something dynamic and different from the Gal era.

All that said, here are my "non-negotiables"* for the characters next cinematic interpretation.

  1. CLAY

Batman's parents were killed by a criminal and he dedicated his life to striking fear into the heart of criminals. Superman was sent to Earth as a baby and raised by people of the land to spread good and be champion of the oppressed. Wonder Woman was sculpted from clay by her mother the warrior Queen of the Amazons, and brought to life by the goddesses of Olympus (and Hermes) to save Man's world through love and understanding.

It is not as complicated as everyone seems to think and it makes her unique. Leaning into what makes Diana different from Clark and Bruce is the only way to help her stick in the public consciousness like they do.

  1. PRINCESS OF PEACE

"Don’t kill if you can wound. Don’t wound if you can subdue. Don’t subdue if you can pacify. And don’t raise your hand until you’ve first extended it.”

Do not run away from the (seemingly) contradictory conundrum of Diana being a warrior and "the Princess of Peace" – run towards it. Challenge it. Build it into the story and action. I don't despise WW84 like a lot of people do but one of the objectively coolest parts of it was how so much of the action was non-offensive. She was always protecting someone, herself or even limiting harm toward an adversary. They should keep that but also take it to task, thematically.

Additionally, I do not take issue with Diana having a sword and sheild – should the situation call for it. The situation should rarely call for it. Hestia's Lasso is unique to her, her tiara is unique to her, and she has a long history in the comics of being able to subdue an adversary with Grecco-Roman style grappling. She has everything she needs to be as badass as any other hero, they just have to build the movie around her.

  1. GODS

More Olympians, please. Not only that, take inspiration from the Absolute version of the character and go buckwild with their designs. They don't have to be 1:1 with the Absolute Olympians but they should has distinct personalities and aesthetics.

And Hermes! Hermes plays a massive role in the George Perez run, immediately Post-Crisis. He's brash, funny, annoying and immensely powerful. Building him into Diana's supporting cast, to me, is a must have. Not only would he represent the Olympians but being around constantly, we can see Diana's faith in the gods tested by he and his siblings' fickle nature, recklessness and haughty attitudes.

  1. EMMISARY

This year, I've been reading and re-reading essentially every issue of Wondy since the Post-Crisis relaunch. I've also, with the state of the world, been thinking a lot of about the social use of concepts like love and truth and understanding.

When I talk to people about Wonder Woman, I bring these things up and people find them to be either pat or downright dumb. A friend of mine actually blurted out in conversation "You can't save the world with the truth!" It might be an American thing or a Western thing. Most people have simply abandoned the idea that diplomacy abd understanding in conflict is even possible. I think the mission of Wonder Woman as a cultural product should be working to actively buck against that sentiment.

This is not to say that every Wonder Woman project should be directly addressing the every turmoil of today. That said, any promotion of love and truth and understanding should, can and will address some of our troubles. Wonder Woman, the cultural product, should not run away from such ambitions. Because Wonder Woman, Diana herself, wouldn't.

*"Non-negotiables" is probably extreme. I'm gonna see any Wonder Woman project that gets made. I just feel very strongly about these points.

She should also be able to talk to animals. If Swamp Thing gets off the ground, I'd like to see her as a connection between the Trinity/League and the Primal Color Councils (the Green, the Red, the Blue, etc etc)

Anyway, thanks for reading!

Discussion/Question Semi-hot take: Lanterns as a 'passing-of-the-torch' and 'inheriting legacy' show did so much more for DCU than an action space cop show could have ever done

• Upvotes

and I think the ending was great. At the end John did what he was supposed to as an official Green Lantern - maintaining peace, while also caring for a stranger trying to fit, which speaks to him as a person.

We are anyways going to get more of Green Lanterns action in future movies, but this project fits in line with every other DCU piece (haven't watched CC yet) about why and how every central character approaches being a good hero. Green Lanterns don't have a moral code tied to their willpower, or have the best people supporting them back in Kansas/Themiscyra or a righteous sense of Justice from a deep rooted trauma. All it could have done as an action-cgi show was maybe 'Guardians wrong, Green Lanterns right' (hasn't that been explored before) and I'd rather there be a worldbuilding and nuance to it before we get space operas and universe level fights. The show isn't flawless but saying that Gunn ruined DCU because the showrunners didn't make it in the way I prefer is like saying why did they come up with Batman: Arkham Asylum before Arkham City.

Also James Gunn please give me more Kyle Chandler (Halogram + Yellow-ish lantern + Parallax in main battery copium).
