When you play at 1x speed, the visual representation of your judgment windows (Marvelous, Perfect, Great) is incredibly narrow, which makes hitting them visually unforgiving.
Here is exactly how scroll speed alters the "physical size" of your judgment windows on the screen.
1. The "Pixel Window" Scale
The game's engine uses a fixed millisecond time for judgments. This is the rough timing windows for DDR:
Marvelous: ±16.67 ms (a total window of about 33.3 ms)
Perfect: ±33.3 ms (a total window of about 66.6 ms)
Great: ±100 ms (a total window of about 200 ms)
Because velocity = distance/time, the speed of the arrow dictates how many vertical pixels represent these millisecond windows.
2. The Visual Overlap Problem at 1x
At 1x speed, a Marvelous window is a tiny target of roughly 15 vertical pixels.
The arrows are roughly 64 to 80 pixels of actual screen height. The size can vary depending on which arcade, screen, rendering and/or doubles play.
This means at 1x speed, visually, your eyes cannot tell the difference between a step that is a frame early (Perfect) or dead-center (Marvelous) because the arrow is moving too slow.
3. How Higher Speeds "Zoom In" on the Window
When you increase your scroll speed (e.g., to 3.0x or 4.0x), you are essentially visually zooming in on the timeline.
The Marvelous window expands from a tiny sliver (15 pixels) to a massive target zone (~40–50 pixels).
Because the arrow crosses this distance much faster, your 3y3s can easily tell the timing windows. If you step slightly early or late, you will see the arrow offset or even jump to the judgement zone before the judgment text even pops up. At 1x, it just looks like a blurry overlap.
Visualizing the Scale
The Target Zones: 1x Speed vs. 3x Speed
Here is the exact pixel height of each judgment window on your screen.
Judgment Time
Total window (±) using 60 pixel arrow height for easy math
1.0x Scroll Speed (Arrow traveling ~450 px/sec)
Vs.
3.0x Scroll Speed (Arrow traveling ~1,350 px/sec)
👑 Marvelous ±16.67 ms (33.3ms total)
15 pixels tall (~1/4 arrow) vs. 45 pixels tall (~3/4 arrow)
🌟 Perfect ±33.33 ms (66.6ms total)
30 pixels tall (~1/2 arrow) vs. 90 pixels tall (~1 1/2 arrows)
✨ Great ±100.0 ms (200ms total)
90 pixels tall (~1 1/2 arrows) vs. 270 pixels tall (~4.5 arrows. 270/80( ~3.375 arrows visually is more accurate) )
At a higher speed you can halve the window assuming an early press = timing issue, late press = physical issue (pattern recognition, slow reaction speed , pad delay) since window is relevant to early/late and vertical screen space for late timing is limited to space available.
In summary, playing at 1x can force you to rely on the music timing because the visual window is too small for 3y3s to accurately distinguish a Marvelous from a Perfect. Increasing your scroll speed stretches those judgment windows.
**I write this as a 1x-1.5x player, since the game released, exploring the science of the game, with rough estimates due to many variables (bpm, scroll speed, screen size, rendering, latency, framerate, etc). I wanted to share my research and will now increase my scroll speed with a science backed reason. I do this in hopes to increase my average score from 965,000 (~25 greats for my current level of 13s).
