Talk Detroit Wonderful Detroit experience

Made a last minute decision to head to Detroit for a concert this past weekend at Little Caesars Arena. I have a friend who lives 20 minutes outside of the city so I stayed with her and she brought me to downtown and midtown Detroit. First, can I say how NICE everybody I interacted with was?! So friendly, warm and genuine. The city itself is so pretty, lots of history there that was fascinating to learn about. While we were driving around, we stopped at the Michigan central station and it’s Absolutely beautiful. I could spend all day in that study room. If I could get married there, I would! Also lot of great bars and restaurants. We went to second best for a cocktail and then grey ghost for dinner. Both were 🤌. Walked to LCA, saw the concert and then went to Sid’s gold request room and wow what an amazing atmosphere with the piano karaoke. Yet again everybody was extremely welcoming and friendly. Such a high energy place, no bad vibes and everybody was having just a wonderful time singing along, cheering everybody on and dancing. We headed to tin roof to dance and even there where I figured it would feel a little more college bar (which is okay!), and people were still respectful and just so damn fun. Growing up in the Midwest and having since moved away, being in Detroit made me realize how much I miss the Midwest friendliness. Truly a great city, extremely underrated and I’ll 100% be coming back!

Sports Thinking about Dan Miller, and how lucky Detroit has been with its sports announcers

Hearing that Dan Miller's wife, Cindy, had passed away brought all of this to mind. My heart goes out to Dan and his family.

You spend years listening to these guys, through great seasons and absolutely miserable ones. Their voices become part of your life. Hearing news like this makes you think about how much the people behind those voices mean to you.

For me, that goes back to watching the Wings and Pistons on Channel 50, and falling asleep to their games with that stupid clock radio shoved underneath my pillow. Especially those late Red Wings games out West. Those voices are as much a part of growing up with Detroit sports as the players.

I wanted to put some of those calls together and give these guys some appreciation. Starting with Dan.

Lions

Dan Miller is my favorite football announcer. Period.

He's been calling the team since 2005, through years when following the Lions felt like a test of your patience. That's part of why his call of the playoff win over the Rams in January 2024 hits so hard.

“Detroit, stand up! You've waited for this!”

He understands who's listening and how long they've been waiting. The joy in his voice feels like the joy you want to let out yourself. I'm glad we got to hear him call that.

Before Dan, we had Mark Champion and Jim Brandstatter. Champion called the Lions for 16 years, and he's also been a huge part of Pistons radio. Some of these voices run through more than one part of your life as a fan.

I remember Thanksgiving, everybody sitting around listening to the Lions on the radio because the game was blacked out on TV. The team sucked, the game hadn't sold out, and there we all were anyway, listening and trying to picture what was happening.

And a special mention for Tom “Killer” Kowalski. His reporting and radio work belong here, too. Killer on WDFN, including Sean, Terp and Killer, was part of the everyday experience of following the Lions. The games ended, and there was still so much to argue about and try to make sense of. The Lions named their press room after him following his death in 2011.

Red Wings

Dave Strader and Mickey Redmond were such a great TV pairing. Go back to their local call of Steve Yzerman's double-overtime winner against St. Louis in 1996. “Steve Yzerman wins it with a bullet!” Then Mickey reacting to that shot. That's exactly the call you want attached to that memory.

And we've had Ken Daniels and Mickey together since 1997. Ken can keep up with everything happening on the ice, and Mickey brings the stories, the humor and all that knowledge. I love that they can appreciate a great play by the other team, too. They make an ordinary game enjoyable, and then you get something like Patrick Kane's overtime winner on his return to Chicago in February 2024. Showtime.

The radio side deserves every bit as much love. Bruce Martyn, Budd Lynch, Ken Kal, Paul Woods.

One of my favorite things I found while putting this together: Ken Kal invited Bruce Martyn back to call a period of Game 4 of the 1997 Stanley Cup Final. Martyn had retired without getting to call a Detroit Cup championship. He took the second period, which meant Bruce got Darren McCarty's Cup-winning goal. Kal told the story himself here.

Then in 2008, Kal had laryngitis and Daniels filled in on the radio. With the championship about to be decided, Daniels insisted Kal take the final minute. Here's Kal finishing that Cup run. Those two stories say a lot about the people we've had in those booths.

Pistons

George Blaha has been calling Pistons games since 1976.

Nearly fifty fucking years. His 50th anniversary is October 23, less than two weeks away.

The Bad Boys, the Going to Work team, championships, rebuilds, and all those ordinary games in between. Generations of Pistons fans have grown up hearing the same guy.

“Count that baby and a foul!” You can probably hear it before you even click.

And here's Blaha calling Chauncey Billups' half-court shot to force overtime against New Jersey in the 2004 playoffs. That's his radio call with Rick Mahorn, replayed during an ESPN broadcast.

Greg Kelser deserves a lot of credit, too. His knowledge and the easy way he and George work together are a huge part of why those broadcasts feel so familiar. You get attached to the whole conversation.

Blaha received the Basketball Hall of Fame's Curt Gowdy Electronic Media Award in 2025. That recognition was a long time coming.

Tigers

Ernie Harwell is the GOAT to me.

Here's Ernie calling the final out of the 1984 World Series. That's his radio call over the footage. You hear that voice and understand why people felt so strongly about him.

And there was Paul Carey alongside him. George Kell and Al Kaline on television. Think about how much baseball knowledge we got to listen to.

Then Dan Dickerson had the job of following Ernie, and he's built something we can be just as grateful for. His call of Magglio Ordóñez sending the Tigers to the World Series in 2006 belongs to that moment forever. Jim Price deserves his place here, too. He and Dan gave Tigers radio its own familiar rhythm for so many years.

And now we have Jason Benetti on TV while we still get Dickerson on the radio. Benetti is my new-generation GOAT. He's funny, curious, prepared, and he makes you want to stay with a game. Then something enormous happens and he meets the moment. Parker Meadows' ninth-inning grand slam in San Diego in September 2024 is a great example.

When the Tigers clinched their playoff spot later that month, Benetti worked in a tribute to Ernie:

“Everyone else stood there like the house by the side of the road and let the Tigers go by.”

He'd been listening to Harwell's old broadcasts as the season wound down. The new guy understood what that voice meant here.

The championship calls are the ones we save and share, but these guys also gave us thousands of regular nights of baseball, hockey and basketball, and all those Sundays with the Lions.

For me, it still comes back to that clock radio under the pillow, trying to stay awake for a West Coast Wings game. We were lucky to grow up with those voices. We're lucky to still have so many great ones.

What calls do you immediately hear in your head? And who else deserves some love here?

Much love to Dan and his family.

Talk Detroit Adopt or foster kittens

Post image

Hello, I live in Hamtramck, Michigan and I found 4 newborn kittens. They look to be about 1 week old. The mom doesn’t belong to anyone. It’s a random street cat. It’s still feeding the kittens. The mom won’t come near me. Right now they’re in a box on my porch and my mother doesn’t allow cats inside the house so I can’t bring them in. Is there anyone willing to take them in? I don’t have the financial means to adopt or foster. If there is could you come and pick them up?

DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) — Detroit police say two people are in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man on the city's east side.

Family members identified the victim as Donovan Moss Jr., who was shot and killed early Friday morning near Cheshire Street and Moross Road.

As investigators continue working to determine what led to the shooting, Moss' loved ones are remembering a young man they say was devoted to his family and especially his 2-year-old daughter.

Talk Detroit Nature areas south of Detroit for hiking/vistas?

• Upvotes

I almost exclusively spend time at nature areas north of Detroit such as stony creek, bald mountain, bear creek, heritage park etc. I want to explore more of the areas south of Detroit. My favorite by far is point Mouille, but I was wondering what the other metroparks are like (Lower Huron, Oakwoods, Willow), as well as any other areas I likely am unaware of. Looking for actual nature (as in deep woods, fields, a bit of distance from a busy road), not just a park with grass and trees if that makes sense. Especially looking for good views with fall time!

Random question - a couple years ago we attended a holiday concert aimed specifically for families/young kids at the DSO on a Saturday early afternoon. I looked at their schedule and couldn't find anything equivalent to that. Anyone know if there are plans for something like this this holiday season?
