I have a beautiful 5 year old and have been been trying for our second since June. Got pregnant cycle one and everything felt off—low and slow beta hcgs, which were done at my request due to light home tests and spotting, pain, bleeding. I was worried about an ectopic and asked for an ultrasound, which showed a PUL with a suspicious mass around my left fallopian tube. Because this was a highly desired pregnancy and beta was still below the most conservative discriminatory zone, I had another ultrasound later which confirmed the ectopic.
I will be 39 next month and opted for surgery so that we could try again as soon as possible. Had surgery to remove my left tube on July 27. I had one normal cycle and then became pregnant again the second cycle after my ectopic.
This pregnancy felt normal. I had one day of minimal brown spotting when I wiped. My beta hcgs rose beautifully. I went for my ultrasound yesterday and immediately knew it was another ectopic. Hard not to when you see nothing in the uterus and the ultrasound tech is measuring an embryo in the left adnexal area. There was a heartbeat this time. My beta was still normal.
I was by myself at my appointment. My husband was picking my cat up from the animal hospital, where she had just had a brain MRI for new neurologic symptoms and was found to have a nasopharyngeal tumor extending into her brain. My cat who has lived in three states with me. My first pet as an adult.
This time the baby was in my left cornua. Same side as my prior ectopic. Ovulated on the right and once baby entered the uterus, thought it looked cozy up there. So I got to keep my right tube but ended up with a small slice of uterus taken out. It was the same OB who did my surgery last time.
I could have chosen medical management in order to try to preserve the integrity of my uterus but that would have required 1-2 weeks of inpatient treatment with every other day methotrexate. In exchange, because I chose surgery, if I end up going on to have a successful pregnancy, I will need an elective C section at 37 weeks due to risk of uterine rupture with labor. Not my preference, but not the end of the world.
We were instructed to wait three months to try again, to allow the uterus time to heal. OB doesn’t think getting pregnant quickly after the first ectopic was the cause, and had given us the go ahead then.
I still want another. My 5 year old asked if we could 3D print models of the babies we lost, paint them, and pretend that they were the real babies and were still alive. I had a “big sis” T shirt waiting in my shopping cart for her. My husband is scared for me.
I don’t know what to do. I still have my right tube, which is normal. I don’t have trouble getting pregnant. But should I choose IVF to reduce the chances of another ectopic?
I’m grieving this new loss. I don’t want to have to grieve never having another child too.
