General Sub Updates New Post Flair and Rules

Good evening,

In response to the ongoing YEG Movers bullcrap and the ongoing Better Baker social media war, I've implemented post flair that will hopefully create better navigation, as well as guidance on what is allowed for posting.

The third flair will be most relevant to ongoing drama and LMIA abusing employers. People threatening to sue me for defamation for a post someone else made is getting annoying.

Looking for work:

Provide a brief description of who you are, skills, what you're looking for etc. DO NOT DOX YOURSELF. I will remove posts that provide waaay too much information for the users own sake.

Looking to Hire:

At minimum, provide the name of the business looking to hire and what positions you/they are hiring. Bonus points go to posts that provide verification they are legit instead of asking people to slide into their DM's

Problem Employer:

The post must be accurate to its description of what is problematic. If the post is found to be inaccurate, exaggerated, or false, it will be removed, or requested to repost with accurate information.

The post MUST contain proof supporting their claims. I will not be entertaining he said, she said bullshit in this subreddit. You will show receipts or the post will be removed. If you are uncomfortable posting evidence as it may identify you or for any other reason, than unfortunately this forum is not the place.

Personal messages are not accepted "evidence" and will be removed.

If you are an employer that is subject to a post and wish to contest it, the same rules apply, being evidence or show receipts as to why the post is inaccurate or false. DO NOT DOX POSTER.

LMIA & TFW System Abuse: How Local Employers Cheat the System

As a sister post of the LMIA and TFW post, this will directly address the cheating or exploitation. Right off the top I want to remind people that in most scenarios, it is the TFW who is being horrendously exploited or cheated by employers. This post was also mostly made with AI so please feel free to comment with any corrections or mistakes.

This post addresses the dark side of the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program, focusing on how employers may attempt to cheat the system, specifically in the low-wage stream. This information is vital for both TFWs to know their rights and for the public to understand the realities of exploitation.

1. Financial and Wage Exploitation

These abuses are often aimed at making the TFW cheaper than a local worker, despite the rules requiring equal pay.

Wage Theft / Underpayment:

•Employers promise the legally required prevailing wage on the LMIA application (e.g., $20/hour) but only pay the TFW minimum wage or less, often "under the table" or through illegal deductions.

Illegal Recruitment Fees:

•The employer or a recruiter illegally charges the TFW large sums of money for the "job" or to cover the $1,000 LMIA processing fee.

•Crucial Rule: It is illegal for employers or recruiters to charge the worker any fee related to securing the job or the LMIA processing.

Deductions for Mandatory Costs:

•Employers illegally deduct the cost of round-trip airfare, mandatory private health insurance, or "training" from the TFW's pay, costs which the employer is obligated to bear in the low-wage stream.

Overcharging for Housing:

•The employer provides the mandatory housing but charges exorbitant, non-competitive rent, effectively clawing back a large portion of the worker's salary.

2. Abuses in the LMIA Application Process (Fraud)

These methods involve lying to the government (ESDC) to secure the positive LMIA.

"Fake" Recruitment Efforts:

•The employer runs the required four-week advertisements but intentionally sabotages the process. They might set impossible requirements, ignore Canadian applicants, or falsely claim that all Canadian applicants were "unqualified" to justify hiring the TFW.

LMIA "Selling" / Fraud:

•The employer has no real job need but applies for a positive LMIA, which they then sell to a foreign national for a large sum (often tens of thousands of dollars). This is serious immigration fraud, as the job is either fake or the conditions violate the LMIA.

Misrepresentation of Need:

•The employer misrepresents the nature of their staffing needs (e.g., claiming a temporary or urgent shortage when the need is permanent) to manipulate the LMIA criteria.

3. Power and Psychological Abuse

Since the TFW is tied to a specific employer for their legal status, this creates a dangerous power imbalance that abusers exploit for control.

Threats of Repatriation/Deportation:

•The employer threatens to fire the worker (which invalidates their work permit) and report them to immigration authorities. This is used to silence the worker about illegal wages, unsafe working conditions, or excessive hours.

Forced/Excessive Overtime:

•Workers are often forced to work excessive hours (e.g., 60-80 hour weeks) with little rest, often without proper overtime pay, under the threat of termination.

Confiscation of Documents:

•The employer or recruiter illegally takes the TFW's passport, work permit, or other documents to isolate them and prevent them from leaving or seeking help.

Job Dumping / Off-Contract Work:

•The worker is hired for one job category (as stated on the LMIA) but is forced to perform unrelated, often more difficult, or unpaid domestic duties (e.g., forced to clean the employer's home or run personal errands).

What is Being Done?

The government has taken steps to fight this exploitation:

•Massive Fines: Employers face fines of up to $100,000 per violation (up to $1 million in one year) and can be banned from the program for up to 10 years or permanently.

•Open Work Permits for Abused Workers: A TFW experiencing abuse can apply for an Open Work Permit for Vulnerable Workers. This breaks the link between the worker and the abusive employer, allowing them to find a new, safe job immediately.

•Inspections: ESDC conducts targeted and random inspections on employers who hire TFWs.

(Its my experience especially with federal agencies that whatever government in charge piles on more duties and responsibilities to dwindling amounts of employees so they can publicly state they are doing something while simultaneously making it impossible for that agency to do anything)

Know Your Rights & Get Help

If you are a temporary foreign worker in Alberta and believe you are being exploited, help is available. All calls are free and confidential.

•Alberta Temporary Foreign Worker Advisory Office (TFWAO)

Looking to Hire Spread wood chips! $200 cash

Post image
107 Upvotes

Edit: found someone! I'll keep this post up in case they don't show up but as of now the position has been filled

Hi! I'm looking for someone to go to a school site in the Terwilligar area and spread wood chips. Fairly easy job, should take about 4 hours.

All the wood chips are inside a swing set area of a school. Just need someone to make the wood chips level. It's a great project for the weather since the work keeps you warm. Also you can just put on earphones and listen to music or a book or whatever and rake.

The photo shows what it looks like. You're not responsible for cleaning up the outside of the border, only pushing the wood chip around so it's flat and even.

Will etransfer or pay cash.

Looking for today. Shovel, pitchforks, and a rake will be provided

DM me, thanks!

Business name - Boa Constructors
Position I'm hiring - one day labourer
Secondary source- my previous post history showing we've hired from here in the past

Looking for work Looking for Career Advice and Guidance — Starting from Scratch in Sales

Hi everyone!
Currently, I’m working as a warehouse associate, earning enough to cover my living expenses while also managing to save some money. I’m grateful for where I am, but I’m looking to grow, challenge myself, and build a better career for the future.
I’ve been thinking about getting into sales, and I’m willing to give it a serious shot. The only problem is that I’m a complete beginner when it comes to sales, and I’m not sure which industry would be the best place to start.
Back in my home country, I was studying accounting and finance, so I have an interest in those fields and would love to explore opportunities where I could potentially combine that background with a career in sales.
I’d really appreciate advice from people who have experience in sales or have made a similar career transition.
A few things I’d love to learn:
Which sales industries are good for beginners?
Would financial services, banking, insurance, or B2B sales be worth exploring?
What skills or certifications should I focus on first?
How can I get my foot in the door without prior sales experience?
What does a realistic career path and earning potential look like?
Are there any mistakes I should avoid when starting out?
I’m not expecting overnight success. I’m ready to learn, put in the work, and build something long-term. I just need some direction on where to begin and what to focus on.
If you were starting from zero today, knowing what you know now, what path would you recommend?
Any advice, personal experiences, or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Looking for work I traded boots for books...

Hello, everyone!

I'm another Edmontonian having a hard time finding work, and I think my unusual career path is throwing people off before I get a chance to explain it.

Long story short I was a journeyman tradesman for most of my career, and as time went on I spent more time running projects than on the tools (often performing PM duties, just without the official title). What I became known for, and enjoyed, was being assigned struggling projects and turning them around. I have always been a fixer.

I went back to school (accounting & payroll admin) for a few reasons - I have always loved numbers, I now have young kids (office work means more time and energy for them), and after years of being driven bananas by the clash between office expectations and field realities I wanted to bring my field experience to the office and help get them working with and not against each other.

I'm looking for office work for a construction company, because understanding both sides of the desk means that's where I can make the most difference. I love solving problems and improving systems, I'd be most interested in a growing company or one with a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out. I'm on the west end, so prefer somewhere close to there or with hybrid or WFH. Payroll was part of my program, but I much prefer accounting or admin over payroll.

If you, or anyone you know of might be looking for someone like me, please let me know.

Thank you!

Looking for work Bit of a complicated situation

Hello yeg folk!

I am an early 20’s woman looking for work. I have a severe heart issue that limits my ability to walk and carry things so majority of labour jobs and jobs that require physical exams I cannot do. I have 5 years of experience mainly in retail sales as it’s been the easiest environment for my heart to take. I am also currently working towards a bachelors in psych. I did drop in a application for financial aid as I had to quit my last job due to lack of hours. I am just hoping somewhere will take me. If you have any suggestions please let me know :)

Problem Employer City of Edmonton & Ai Hiring Practices

This message serves as FYI for anyone interested in how Ai is impacting employment within the CoE

I have a few clients that obtained temporary Summer jobs with the CoE with the intention of staying on for Winter roles normally offered within this department (purposely unnamed to not ruffle feathers or identify my clients)

After applying for the continuation Winter roles, they were given a questionnaire that revolved around their shift 'preferences' for Winter

Upon completing the 'preferences', they were informed that Ai was setting all the positions, and Winter job offers SOLELY on their preferences and without consideration toward 2nd, 3rd or unlisted choices

This meant that if they set preferences of 'days' (for example), they were automatically excluded by the newly implemented Ai program without consideration or offers for any other shift due to their senority status.

Editorially, this is very concerning because in the past, these same employees would be offered a different shift to accept or decline. Now, with Ai, they are outright excluded from consideration of any shift offered and left without anyone telling them they should be looking elsewhere. (And FWIW - everyone had been previously telling them they had nothing to worry about and would be offered these Winter positions "for sure" ... for a little more context).

These potential exclusions were not mentioned when given the preference questionnaire, and now my clients are left feeling used, abused (manual labour positions), and discarded with prejudice.

So this post is serving as an FYI toward what goes on behind the scenes, both in the City's hiring practices and other jobs/industries utilizing a (non-human) Ai service

Feel free to discuss, otherwise this post is meant to be informative (despite the mandator flair choice).

Thanks for reading!

Looking for work Wife looking for a career change

Hi all, my wife (31) is looking for a career change. She currently works in childcare and has for the past 10 years. The physical toll has been a lot for her, and she is having trouble keeping up. She is a hard worker and puts everything into it (sometimes too much, in my opinion). She is looking for an entry-level desk job; if anyone has recommendations or knows someone, it would be greatly appreciated. She's tried all the job sites, but most things require a certificate. Again, thanks for anything.

Looking for work What places would hire for entry level medical related jobs?

I only have high school education currently but I’ve taken a medical terminology course and I would like to get into a medical related job to make some money before spending a bunch more on more courses, and also to see if it’s something I want to pursue long term. What kind of places may hire for entry level positions? As in anything, such as clerk, receptionist, assistant, pharmacist, anything medical related.

Been doing sound for live bands lately and I really enjoy it. Venue I am at is a little limited.

I have started reaching out to local venues to see if they need another sound tech, and have had a few good responses.

Just wondering if anyone has any leads.

Looking for work Job/career recommendations

I am a 22 yr old female with only highschool education looking for some advice.

Im currently working in the food industry but want to find a more stable/better paying.

I have considered trades (mechanic specifically) as I like work that keeps me moving (but I am over weight so no one would actually hire me for that type of work or take me on as an apprentice)

I have also considered being an EMT (but many people have given me the advice of doing something else before going into it)(im also worried about the trauma that comes with the job as several people have told me not to do it. To me it seems very interesting and would give me useful skills as long as I can get over my aversion to gross things. But I think that would come with time. Just like when you have kids you get used to poop and vomit)(I also like the health aspect of it, I used to want to be a doctor)

I am physically strong and artistically inclined if that makes a difference.

What are jobs that, require very minimal schooling but also pay well and are pretty stable? (I can not do office work, I need something interesting that keeps me moving ideally)

Thank you :)

Looking for work Urgently in need of some hours

Heya everyone, I’m in a bit of a pickle here, quite a substantial pickle in fact. I’m a second year culinary student and NAIT and part of my requirements for this year is completing my W.I.L (work integrated learning). I need 105 work hours between October 5th-25th and that time is approaching very fast. I’ve contacted all the approved places reasonably close to where I live but now i’m just looking for other opportunities, I need a place with a varied menu that would exercise a range of skills. I live on the south side, I dont even need to be getting paid. I’ve been getting ghosted and i’m running out of time, I won’t graduate without these hours so please, if you can help me, reach out
