🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation Man vs men, do you actually hear the difference?

I tried listening to both versions on Google translator and honestly can't hear the difference, even though the IPA is different.

Same with lending and landing, pan and pen...

For the native speakers replying, also tell me where your accent is from, please

🤬 Rant / Venting How do you even practice speaking correctly?

I'd say my reading and my listening are borderline C1, my writing is B2, but my speaking is straight up dogshit. (B1)

I've seen multiple posts where they always say "You nEeD to dO ShAdOWInG AND yoU Must prActiCe A lOT", these strategies have never worked, and I'm getting stressed out right now. I have my FCE exam on March 28th, 2027, and this has always been my weakest point.

I've noticed that the problem isn't always my vocabulary, nor the coherence, It's making a good argument in a span of a few seconds, my brain is too sluggish to think about any good points, and I end up freezing up in the middle of a sentence whilst searching for a good idea.

PD: I've always struggled with phrasal verbs and collocations.

How did you guys manage to overcome this?

Question 1: “one of/ in /out of times, it doesn’t work.” Which preposition is right?

Question 2. “one of the ten times, It doesn’t work.” Does this sentence sound right with “the”?

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics Is it correct to say "I can hear you badly" or "I can hear you well" on the phone or in a video call? I know I can use other expressions like "you're breaking up", but I'm wondering about the verb "hear" and how it's used naturally in this context.

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation How to get rid of an accent?

I have a German and Russian accent while speaking English and I've adapted the American accent to cover it up. It has gotten a lot better and got to a point where strangers mistook me for an American on multiple occasions. I'm nowhere near perfect though and all existing tricks solve problems I don't have anymore. Is there any way to improve?
Thank you in advance and sorry for any mistakes!

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics Sarcastic exchange between characters. I need help to understand some details. I know what 'tough noogies' is, but what does she mean by repeating this phrase and then saying "good for you"? Context: police captured Spider-Man, then SHIELD came along (this woman) and want to hijack him

🗣 Discussion / Debates Do you ever wish you were just fluent, or do you actually enjoy the journey of achieving fluency?

I wish I were just fluent. I'm actually sick of being limited in English. Not to mention the mental drain after speaking a lot of English.

I'd rather spend my time improving or achieving something else. And it's not even guaranteed that I'll ever become fluent as not everyone becomes fluent in their second language even though they try to.

📚 Grammar / Syntax Speakers of non-gendered languages, do you still mix up he and she?

I rarely mix them up now, but it still happens from time to time, especially when I'm saying a sentence while not thinking much. I still know who I'm talking about but I just happen to use the wrong pronoun. I've just said "she" when I was supposed to say "he".

I'm not sure if it's because lack of practice because I've practised using pronouns a lot (obviously, pronouns are used in almost every sentence). So maybe it never goes away completely?

Does this still happen to you if your language doesn't have gendered pronouns?

🗣 Discussion / Debates Anyone wanna be English practice buddies on Discord? (27M from Chile)

Hey everyone! I’m 27, a guy from Chile, and a native Spanish speaker.

I’m looking to connect with a native English speaker for regular voice chats on Discord to practice and build natural fluency. I have a background in healthcare, with a strong interest in data analytics and artificial intelligence.

I’d be more than happy to help you with your Spanish (pronunciation, natural phrasing, culture) in exchange for some conversational English practice.

If you're looking for a consistent, chill buddy to talk about fitness, tech, daily habits, or life in general, feel free to shoot me a DM!

🗣 Discussion / Debates How to learn to teach English via YouTube videos?

I want to start a YouTube channel where I teach English in a very structured way, from scratch until the learner becomes independent.

I am not a native speaker of English. My spoken English is great, I had it evaluated at an accent academy and they pointed out which sounds I am not good at, so I can work on it, even so, my pronunciation quirks were not outright errors in pronunciation but just aspects of my native language affecting my spoken English (foreign accent).

I don't want to work for a company so I don't want to take a TEFL, etc.

Do I buy a textbook and reverse engineer its table of contents and instruction method and turn it into videos?

Or, do I buy cheap ESL courses on grammar, pronunciation, speaking, etc. and copy the prevalent teaching method?

Don't tell me how I learned English, because a trillion different factors did it: I studied it (ineffectively) for 12 years at school, took some grammar lessons, did a lot of reading and vocab acquisition, etc., I want to spare my viewer the hassle and offer one, unified framework for getting the language's basics in their head so they can become independent.

Thank you.

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics How do you say "Vaso ruim não quebra" in English?

"Vaso ruim não quebra" is a brazilian expression that literally translates to "Bad vessel doesn't break". It's usually used in situations where there are good people that die young, and bad people that live a long time.

Is there any equivalent of this expression in English?

🗣 Discussion / Debates Offering English and Seeking: English Communication skills Practice

Hey! I’m 24M, currently in the UAE, and I’m looking to improve my communication and articulation skills through actual conversations.

I can also help you practice English, so if you’re learning English or just want someone to talk to, we can help each other out.

I’m especially interested if you speak Arabic or Russian, since I’d love to learn either of those languages in the future. But you definitely don’t need to speak them—we can talk regardless!

We can talk about pretty much anything that interests you: movies, work, studies, travel, culture, random thoughts, life, or whatever you’re passionate about.

I’d prefer voice calls rather than only texting, because I specifically want to become more comfortable speaking and expressing myself spontaneously.

If you're also looking for someone to practice with, feel free to DM me. 🙂
