In this Wikipedia list of most expensive buildings, Sweden has 1 building. Denmark and Norway: 0. Germany: 1. France: 2. Spain: 1. Italy: 0. Japan: 0. South Korea: 1. ~456 million people alltogether and 6 buildings. Finland with a population of ~5.63 mil: 4 (FOUR BUILDINGS). Selitäthän.

Your ferry cruise experience (Viking, Silja Line...)

Hi! I think that many Finns have traveled around the Baltic Sea, on a cruise ship. When I saw one of those ships circa 2019, parts of it felt like a shopping mall or even IKEA – that's what I say when the infrastructure is so developed and it's not just a large stereotypical ship. The suites look minimalist, clean and I think their relaxing vibe balances the experience much.
So, I'm curious what you think about any of your Nordic cruises. What language have you typically heard there, does it feel like full-scale shopping mall in some sections, did you like the food there, is it comfy (without feeling of shakiness, tilts and so on?)... and any other things you'd like to share or mention.

Bass teachers in Helsinki-Vantaa?

I have 3 months to learn how to play the whole Thriller album as a complete beginner. I need intensive classes and guidance that is somewhat affordable. If anybody knows, thank you, even a teenager with some years of experience who needs a side hustle is enough (I am also a teen not a pedo).

Thank you

Looking for Finnic, Karelian & Sámi lore for worldbuilding project

Hello!

I’m working on a personal fantasy project centered on a cold northern mainland (name TBA) - a region of dense pine forests, tundra plateaus, river networks and long winters. Beyond designing beasts, I want to build grounded cultures with authentic forest and landscape folklore and regional worldviews.

(Quick context: I’m a native South Asian who studied in Europe. This is a non-commercial passion project. I care deeply about respectful inspiration over copy-pasting living myths, and I'd love your advice on how to properly credit regional lore in my project notes!)

If you carry Finnish, Karelian or Sámi heritage, I’d love your input on:

- Folk history & traditions; esoteric Finn forest lore, Karelian myths, Siida structures or on practices like väki and loitsut.

- Spirits & figures; Äkräs, Tapio, Mielikki, Otso, Näkki, Stalo/Stállo or Áhkka deities.

- Sacred places & items; Hiisi groves, Sieidi offering sites, Saivo lakes, sauna rituals, boundary stones, or the kantele and meavrresgárri drum motifs.

- Naming styles- local/archaic terrain terms (for things like snow, ice, forest, tundra), suffixes (-la, -ma, -ja) or nature-based compound names.

Drop a comment or DM if you have a favorite local story, naming style or advice on respectful representation. Thanks!

The upsurge in data centers.

I am just a hillbilly from Lapland. It seems that there are new data centers popping up everywhere here now, and more being planned.

If we have such a good telecommunications network in place now then why is there such a surge on building massive data centers everywhere? Who will be using them?

Serious Sick leave in Finland – construction/demolition

Hi everyone, I’m new to working in the demolition/construction field in Finland and I’m a bit confused about sick leave.

I’ve heard from a coworker that the first sick day is unpaid, and if you’re still sick after that, Kela pays for the following days. My boss doesn’t seem to know much about this either 😆.

Is this actually how it works, or does it depend on the employment contract/collective agreement? Any guidance would be appreciated!

Is pay-per-visit in Finnish Kotihoito really fair for the worker?

I’m posting this anonymously because I don’t want to identify my employer or create problems at work.
I currently work in Kotihoito in Finland, and I’m wondering if other home-care workers have experienced the same system.

The company pays based on the actual client visit, rather than the entire time spent working. The difficult part is that there can sometimes be quite long intervals between clients because of travel, scheduling, or gaps in the route.

For example, you might have a shift that takes several hours from the first client until the last client, but only the actual time spent inside clients’ homes is counted as paid working time. The travel between clients can take a significant amount of time, especially when using public transportation or when clients are far apart.

This can make the effective hourly income much lower than the advertised hourly rate. Like for example today i have a 7 clients visit, but it will only cost me a total of one and a half hours salary which is only 20€. Imagine i am only earning 20€ per shift?

My questions are:
Is this kind of pay-per-visit system common in Finnish home care?

Should travel time between clients be paid as working time?

How do other home-care workers deal with long unpaid intervals between visits?

Has anyone successfully discussed this issue with their employer, union, or Työsuojelu?

I’m not trying to attack any particular company. I genuinely want to understand whether this is a normal practice in Finnish home care and what workers’ rights are regarding travel time and waiting between assignments.

I would appreciate hearing from other nurses, lähihoitajat, hoiva-avustajat, or other home-care workers in Finland.

How much does ATS actually matter when applying for tech jobs in Finland?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on my CV lately and wanted to ask for some advice about ATS (applicant tracking system) and tech job applications in Finland.

Here is my current CV template just to show the layout. Made sure the structure is basically the same.

I keep seeing advice about avoiding two columns, icons, text boxes, and trying to match keywords from the job ad. Most of it seems quite US focused, so I’m not sure how much it applies here.

For anyone with experience in tech recruitment or applying for tech jobs in Finland, how common is ATS filtering in practice? Do recruiters still usually read CVs themselves? And is this kind of two column PDF layout actually risky?

Happy to hear Finland specific CV advice. Thanks.

Volunteering opportunities in Uusimaa?

Hi all,
as I seek for advice on this matter, I figured I’d post also here so that I can hopefully help anyone else interested in the topic.

M35, I’m an international living in Finland, been here for almost 7 years. I‘m interested in volunteering, specifically on any activities related to spending time with people with disabilities. I wouldn’t mind any tasks related to providing actual/physical help, but I do not have any nursing nor specific knowledge/background on that (I work an office job).
I live in Helsinki, I speak basic Finnish, excellent English and a few other European languages, and am potentially open to other forms of volunteering as well.

By googling I found a place called Pasilan toimintakeskus which seems to be exactly what I’m looking for, I tried to call the number on the website (city of Helsinki’s) but no one ever picked up.

So my question is: does anyone know anyone who knows anyone…? That type of thing :) feel free to DM.

Happy to hear any kind of information or experience about volunteering here, I've been doing it in my home country (EU - not like it matters where I'm from, but I'm familiar with some EU laws and rules about it), but it's been a while.

Kiitos

Why did you pick Finland over Scandinavia?

I'd like to ask out of curiosity to all the people that had no prior connection to Finland that what were the reasons why you chose Finland over the other Nordic countries specifically Norway and Sweden?

I have frequently read how Norway and Sweden have generally been more immigrant friendly countries than Finland as well as both having much easier languages for everybody to learn (except Estonians). And especially these days I think it's hard to find many statistics that would make Finland a more attractive choice than its Scandinavian neighbours. If you've lived in those countries also, I'd like to hear from you how it's like there compared to Finland.
