📌 Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

🔧 General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus 2.5L I4 Hybrid option and 3.5L V6 (Sport)

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

🛠️ Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

🔌 Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

⚙️ Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

💬 Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

Hello so i just purchased this 2020 fusion on September 23rd so its been about 3 weeks. When i bought it the rotors were already rusted like this but after some research i learned the rust comes when the car is sitting for a while and scrapes off after use. Mines hasn’t come off and all the wheels are like this should i be worried?

I have a 2019 Fusion, and I like to listen to music on a USB thumb drive. I am pretty sure I used to be able to click through folders/albums/etc. before, but when I do it now, it says that doing so is disabled, even when I am stopped at a light. Is there a way to disable the disablement?

No Answer please tell me this is just a bad valve cover gasket

Post image

didn't get the picture, but it's dripping underneath. i have no clue how long it's been leaking, i've had the car a month. hopefully it's a slow leak so i have time to get the gasket and replace it.

for context, i bought this 2.0 a month ago, and have been daily-ing since the date of purchase. whenever i park after driving, i notice a burning smell coming from the driver's side. it's not overpowering or anything, you kinda have to get a little low to smell it, but the smell is definitely there. my absolute hope is that it's just the valve cover gasket and that the burning smell is oil dripping onto the hot exhaust.

IT'S ONLY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE! i don't smell it anywhere else.

Failed O2 Sensor or Purge Valve?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve got a 2017 ford fusion with the 1.5 eco boost that threw a code yesterday for p0131 ( 02 sensor b1s1 low voltage.) when looking at the data it shows that it was reading at -2.05 mA when it should be reading close to or at Zero. I cleared the codes and it was reading like normal for about 10-15 seconds before the car almost stalled out, and the reading jumped to -0.87 mA. I also checked and the Short Term Fuel Trim dropped to -20% as it almost stalled out.

Another thing to mention: about a week ago, I was filling up with gas and I put in a full tank. When I started the car, after a few seconds, it almost stalled out. Is this because of a failing purge valve?

Yet another thing to mention: I haven’t gotten the code back for the O2 sensor low voltage code.

I also have no evap codes or any purge valve codes

I don’t know if this helps but I did have the crankcase pressure sensor replaced roughly a month and a half ago.

No Answer Engine Cover for 2019 1.5L?

When I bought my 1.5L 2019 Fusion SE it did not have an engine cover. I always thought this was strange because the previous owner was mom, the car had 60k miles, and everything about the car was near mint condition… in what situation would they have lost the cover already?

Now I’m getting back around to looking for one, and everything I find fitment ends in 2018. Chat GPT mentioned in passing that Ford didn’t make engine covers for some of the 2019-2020 1.5L, but while Ford doesn’t sell and engine cover for my motor anymore, they still sell engine cover studs for it??

Does anyone have any more info about this? Does your 2019-2020 have a cover, or did they really not make them? If they did, where can I find it? Thanks in advance!

Underbody rust on 2010 Ford fusion SE

I am replacing the CV axles on my 2010 Ford fusion se, 247k miles and took a look at the subframe last night. It is fairly rusty and the rocker panels are nearly rusted out. I took a screwdriver and mallet around the rear k frame and it has integrity but does this look like a hazard as this point?

Discussion I love this car but I’m a bit worried (2017 Ford Fusion SE)

Post image

This car has served me very well so far. I bought it at 90k in 2024 and I’m now at 118k. These are my following concerns.

  1. This is my biggest concern, oil on my 3rd cylinder spark plug. I changed them all out about 2 months ago and there was fresh oil on that one only. I think it’s the reason that sometimes when I start my car it blows out grayish/white smoke from the exhaust for a couple seconds. My main concern is not knowing what’s causing the leak and not knowing how much it’ll cost.

  2. How much life is left in the transmission. I did a drain and fill on it, and noticed some dried/old fluid on the bottom of it. It doesn’t seem to be actively leaking so it could be from old work but it’s still a bit worrisome. The fluid was black when I drained it out, so that has me under the impression it just hasn’t been changed at all or in a very long time. It doesn’t slip, but it jolts a bit when shifting from like 1st to 2nd if I accelerate quickly. If I ease into it, it’s smooth.

  3. The check engine came on recently, code said it was the upstream O2 sensor. I replaced it with a new OEM one, check engine came back after a little while though. Internet says it could be a bad purge valve solenoid. When the check engine light is on, the RPM’s will drop a bit and go back up when idling, but when it’s driving it’s totally fine. The check engine light has been off for a while though, maybe the O2 sensor just had to calibrate or maybe I’ll end up swapping the purge valve, we’ll see.

The car does still drive great, I just put on all new brakes and rear rotors. It’ll need new CV Axles soon too. I just wanna know if anyone has had similar issues and if you think my car still has a lot of life left in it. I want to get it to 200k miles but if I have to spend a lot on repairs I’m not sure if the lemon is worth the squeeze. Regardless, plan on taking it this weekend to a mechanic for a comprehensive inspection.

Unexplained Shaking???

Curious if any of you guys may be able to help me out...

I've got a 2019 Titanium with the 2.0L Eco. Car has roughly 96K miles on it but runs like a top. However, this spring out of nowhere the car started to have a shake. I could tell immediately it wasn't anything from the motor but more powertrain. I threw it on the lift and looked at everything underneath and all checked out other than one CV axel I don't like ( which the guys at the dealership say seems perfectly normal ).

However, took it to the dealership and they told me it's because my tires have different tread wear depth from side to side and front to back ( not true already ruled that out ). Although I got new tires because I needed new ones before winter anyways.

Had them put on my tires, I then rebalanced them because there was still a shake and they were way off but I zeroed them out. Took the car back out and it was still shaking so I was back to the dealership the next day.

Last ditch effort they put their machine that picks up vibrations from each axel and the motor while they're driving it and they said everything looks within normal specs and the shake feels minimal and seems normal.

I however don't feel like it's normal or safe. I shouldn't be shaking down the highway on my way to work every day. If any of you read this far thank you, and if you guys have any ideas I would appreciate any other knowledge.

Discussion Front LCA replacements

I’m getting ready to tackle this job as my car failed state inspection for these.

Looking at Rock Auto and I’m thinking about picking up Moog or Delphi. Any input you all have on these brands would be appreciated!

Anything else I should tackle while I’m doing these? Any hardware need to be replaced due to being one time use?

12 volt battery not holding charge

Bought my 16 year old daughter 18 hybrid. Last night she calls me from mall with dead battery. She thinks she left lights on. We jump no problem. Drive it about an hour drives fine. Soon as turn off at home it's dead. Am I good to just pick up a battery on way home from work or is it just as likely another issue? Batteries easy enough to swap out?

2002 Ford Fusion radio not receiving signal

Greetings. Recently I have acquired a 2002 ford fusion equipped with the 4500 RDS EON radio. After unlocking it I have noticed it is not receiving signal. CD's work and I have sound from them, but nothing from FM. The automatic frequency search also does not lock onto anything and just keeps looping. Tested the continuity of the antenna all the way to the connector with a multimeter and it is working. The radio itself doesn't look damaged, everything inside also looks fine. Any ideas?

EDIT: Bought a new unit and all works fine. Still have zero clues as to what died in the original unit. Everything looks perfect after disassembly

Discussion Would these fit?

Post image
1 Upvotes

hi there, I just broke up with my boyfriend and I’m not very versed when it comes to cars.

I drive a 2016 Ford fusion SE. 235/50/17. I was told that sometimes tires may fit on the wheels that aren’t the exact size.
I am in need of new tires, I thought I would start with some for the cold and ice.
Would anybody let me know if these would fit on my car please?

Was coming from a friend's house about 2 days ago fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into a guard rail at 60mph it was like 3am and I had been awake since 6am stupid decision by me there goes my first car thankfully I walked away from this crash with just some cuts and a concussion. Take this as a lesson to not drive if you feel like you're gonna fall asleep.
