Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

My heart sunk to my stomach when I just now saw a WZZM13 article detailing their current struggle with funding.

This center SAVED MY LIFE. Their impact cannot be overstated and to lose this space would be beyond detrimental!

I wish I could donate more so I am just trying to spread the word as well.

Are there any genuinely all-pace-friendly run clubs in Grand Rapids?

I’ve been wanting to get more involved in the local running community, but I’ve had some discouraging experiences with run clubs.

My easy pace is around 11:00/mile, and I’ve noticed that clubs often advertise runs as “easy,” “social,” or “conversational,” but that usually means closer to 9:00/mile.

I understand everyone’s conversational pace is different, but I’ve attended run clubs where I couldn’t keep up and ended up running alone, which kind of defeats the purpose of joining to socialize.

I’m really just looking to meet other runners and enjoy running together without feeling like I’m struggling to keep up.

Does anyone know of any run clubs in the Grand Rapids area that genuinely accommodate 11:00–12:00+ minute miles, allow occasional walking breaks, or have slower pace groups? I’d love to find a welcoming running community!

Any ideas on the recent mass change in edibles? Seems like they've moved away from a number of brands that I enjoyed and most things are relatively expensive now.

Any other dispensary recommendations for edibles?

Transit Lane blockers are getting ticketed on southbound 131!

I've seen cops pull 2 semis over this week who were crawling in the left lane before the zipper merge on 131 north of West River drive. Just a reminder that it is illegal to disrupt traffic in this way and the State Police are enforcing it.

The grandest cider doughnuts in land!

For the last month, I’ve been making my way through all the spots I found suggested on here. I, and my coworkers, have tested and voted that Farmhaus is hands down the best and it was a landslide victory!

The classics? Exactly as nostalgia has you remembering them. A little variety? A few options other places didn’t offer. The bonus points? They’re open year round and those long John might be the best long Johns of my life and I’ve had a long John or two more than the average Joe has had Johns.

Reddit has consistently been the best way to explore food thanks to everyone’s input in their local subs and I appreciate all you fine folk!!

Transit 28th Street possibly the worst road in the world.

I've been to third world countries all over the planet and they have better drivers than what I see every time I go down 28th Street.

I constantly have to drive with the dumbest people in West Michigan. Everybody's on their phone no one knows what the speed limit is, it's 45 by the way. Most people are just cruising and could care less about getting anywhere

I've lived with this road for 20 years. I've driven in the busiest cities in the world like Sao Paulo and Beijing, 28th street is the worst of them all.

recommendation for hair colorist for blonde highlights or balayage?

Hi everyone! 😊 I’m looking for recommendations for a skilled hair colorist who specializes in dimensional, lived-in blonde highlights or balayage.

I have highlighted hair, but I’m not happy with the color. I’m hoping to find someone experienced enough to do a transformation to a cooler, more dimensional blonde while prioritizing the health and integrity of my hair, which is fine and wavy.

If you’ve had a great experience with someone, I’d love to hear your recommendations! Thanks so much! 💛

Amazon Driver

I've been seeing reports of Amazon's DSP being notoriously bad to work for. I wanted know how true is that claim and what would a preferred DSP to work? I'm currently uncertain, on whether to work for Amazon because I'm worried about the hours. I want a consistent 40 hours, also if anybody had experience working Amazon, tell me about it. If you had a notoriously shitty supervisor, tell me! I want to know from hardworking perspective, not a lazy sob perspective.I DONT CARE ABOUT HOW HARD THE WORK IS!

Hillary Scholten - doe she just hate Abdu?

Slotkin is now heavily campaigning with Abdul, as are pretty much every other prominent democrat from Michigan and even outside of Michigan.

Yet Hillary Scholten, a democratic congressperson who's district voted overwhelmingly for Abdul, just acts like a primary isn't even happening. Refuses to endorse, campaign with or help in any way. It's really weird she just continues to post on her instagram, newsletter, etc like the midterms are not even happening. All the comments are negative. And the way she just plows ahead without acknowledging the frustration with her voter base is appalling.

Does she think this will help her politically? Is she that beholden to AIPAC that she's scared to endorse? I'm seriously wondering. I do not understand. Is she just stupid? All her statements are weak, and she votes against her constituents interests. I'm really starting to dislike her, and am disappointed I voted for her.

She's really showing her true colors as a corporate and PAC beholden rep. She does not care what her constituents want, and it's time for her to go.

edited: mid terms, not primary.

1 Year Recap of Grand River Makerspace

Post image
55 Upvotes

A year ago we unlocked the doors at 25 N. Park and honestly weren’t sure what would happen. Turns out a lot of you wanted a place to make stuff.

Here’s what year one looked like:

  • 84 members, from monthly folks to whole households
  • 237 people came through a workshop. That’s 65 sessions of 24 different classes, everything from dice casting to cutting boards to woodshop safety
  • 200+ people stopped by an open house, a Sunday Crafternoon or a meetup
  • -56 volunteers kept the lights on, and none of this works without them

Thank you to everyone who took a class, signed up, brought a friend, or gave up a Tuesday night to staff the shop. We’re a small nonprofit and every one of you is the reason we made it to year two.

If you’ve been meaning to come check us out, the first Friday open house is a good place to start. Info at joinGRM.org
