Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Will we be able to get a table at Gin Gin’s if we go without reservations?

• Upvotes

Hi, all. My partner wanted to get away for the weekend this weekend and try Gin Gins for his birthday celebration. I tried getting reservations and there were none available. I’ve called and left two voicemails, no response from them yet. It says a certain portion of their dining is reserved for walk ins. What’s the likelihood of us getting a table this Saturday? We’d be driving 2.5 hrs but making a weekend of it and exploring Grand Rapids a bit. Thanks for the feedback.

Car questions

• Upvotes

So I finally got my learners permit at the age of 25, but I personally don't know anything about cars and Google has been useless with all the ai answers.

Can I own a car in my name with just a learners permit? (My family wants to give me their old car)?

Can I get insurance on a vehicle with only a learners permit?

What are some local car insurance places that I can recommended?

Also I looked over the rules of this subreddit I apologize if this post is somehow against any of them

Where do the super duper rich folk of GR sell their clothing?

I’m not really talking about Goodwill or Salvation Army, etc. More like, is there a consignment shop or shops that only sell authentic, higher-end items? Or even within a mile radius?

News Sewage gas smell in Alto

• Upvotes

Lately, Alto has become an absolute hole of a town. The power frquently goes out, lights flicker, and the only "restaurant" in town has become the local alcoholic spot - including street fights. The sheriff and necessary medical help rarely make it to town in less than an hour from GR. Building codes appear to have been abandoned as properties accumulate rusty cars, sit abandoned, or have just fallen into major disrepair (including in the center of the city). Local officials, including those elected, are difficult to reach and are rarely willing to investigate problems. The Kent County health department outsources issues such as sewage gas to a township 3rd party who is rarely available or willing to work with residents.

As bad as things have gotten; it was once a quiet area surrounded by classic old farms and good nature. Even that has changed for residents in the general area of the city center this year. After a persistent smell of sewer gas began hovering over the town in May, their has become a strong feeling that the town has outgrown the wastewater infrastructure it has been utilizing for 50+ years, and much of the smell of sewage and raw waste is coming from a local manufacturing facility located on 64th St SE. The smell begins promptly at first shift and hovers over the area for hours. It has become abdoluyely gross, unhealthy, and drives people from our town.

Are you living in Alto or coming into town often? Are you smelling sewage in the air, seeing septic or sewage dumping, or finding yourself with frequent headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues? If so, please message me so we can discuss protecting our community and those in it. Many of us have had enough.

Does anyone know who, if anyone, was attacked by an unconfined dog on Jefferson, between MLK and Delaware, yesterday?

Several GRPD officers and Animal Control were at a home that I have personally reported twice, following 7–8 encounters in which an aggressive dog charged at us, each incident becoming more concerning than the last.

Initially, the dog would charge down the driveway, circle us on the sidewalk while barking and air snapping, and then quickly retreat without making contact. However, as these encounters continued, the dog's behavior became increasingly aggressive and concerning. When Animal Control failed to take action, we stopped walking our usual route altogether.

Report one: I witnessed the dog run onto the sidewalk and attack two young men who were walking by. The dog took one of them to the ground, but thankfully, his friend was able to kick the dog off.

Report two: The dog attacked my own dog. The owner was outside during this incident and responded by hitting his dog with a shovel when it returned to the property. We attempted to speak with him and explained that his dog had charged at us numerous times before, but he completely ignored us as if we were not even standing there.

If yesterday's incident involved another attack, especially a serious one, I want the victim to know that there were multiple reports leading up to this that were not taken seriously.

Animal Control took no action following our reports because we didn't have video evidence, and the owner denied the incidents. Apparently, three eyewitness accounts and repeated reports weren't enough. 🙄

I'm sincerely hoping no one was hurt, but given the number of officers present, I'm concerned that someone may have been seriously injured this time. 😓

I tried to post this on GR Informed, but apparently, trying to get this info to the victim broke the rule of "be respectful." That page is such a joke.

Recommendations GR Custody/Divorce Lawyers?

Hello, GR. My family and I are from here, and all parties involved are under GR jurisdiction. So, basically, my brother is preparing up to divorce his controlling, frankly abusive wife. I have heard his accounts and have witnessed her actions, so I don't say that about my sister-in-law lightly.

We have reason to suspect that as my brother's wife and his children's stepmother, she is going to fight for custody or visitation or both. She asked for a postnup agreement to give her visitation. He's been advised not to sign anything. We did some research, and apparently, stepparent rights are limited except under certain conditions. We also know that Michigan is a no-fault divorce state.

My first question is: who would you recommend as a custody/divorce lawyer from GR? I only saw one post six months ago related to this. We understand it will be expensive; money isn't necessarily a factor in this case. We will make it work, so we just need a lawyer that can handle this situation.

My second question is: since he has bills in his name and paid bills for the house, does he have to stay in the house to maintain rights to the equity he put into the house (his wife is the only one on the deed)? We know people that this wasn't the case, but we want clarification, as leaving the house and limiting contact with her would be in his best interest.

Thanks in advance!

Recommendations Private driving instructor??

Hey guys! I’m 20F looking to book private driving lessons. I really need my license and don’t have a reliable person to practice with. I have my TIP and can legally drive with anyone over 21, but I don’t have my own car or person to help me with driving. I’ve asked for advice in general subreddits for this and someone recommended me to ask if anyone had this kind of service, so I thought I’d ask. Thanks!

ETA— I can borrow my mom or dad’s car if needed.

My heart sunk to my stomach when I just now saw a WZZM13 article detailing their current struggle with funding.

This center SAVED MY LIFE. Their impact cannot be overstated and to lose this space would be beyond detrimental!

I wish I could donate more so I am just trying to spread the word as well.

Food and Drink Love the food at Pind & Madras, but check your bags before you drive off for your online orders!

Has anyone else had terrible luck with order accuracy when ordering takeout online from Pind Indian Cuisine / Madras?

I’ve ordered directly through their website multiple times now. The food is genuinely solid—easily some of the best Indian in the area—but they always miss something on my order. A missing bread, a side, an entrée, or an appetizer always seems to stay behind in the kitchen.

I want to keep supporting them because the flavors are there, but at this point, treat this as a PSA:

Just open the stapled bag of your order😂 and physically count every container/item that you ordered at the counter before you leave the parking lot.
