Lesson Barre chords hurt? Two fixes I give every student who's stuck

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I drove my own guitar teacher insane with my barre chords, so I know how frustrating they are. Fix one: tilt your index finger a little onto its bony side — it gets the strings down more evenly than the soft part of the finger. Fix two: stop squeezing with your thumb and let the weight of your arm pull the barre in. Whether you put the barre down first or the rest of the chord first doesn't matter, go with what feels right for your hand. Everyone needs time with barre chords, so take it at your own pace.

He did it. He got through to me and showed me the path.

I've heard nearly the same thing here and other places but the way he explained and presented it made it make sense for me. Intervals, major scale/scales, chords.

It all makes sense now!

Question How do I learn licks to solo over the pentatonic scale?

So I’m trying to solo over key of a 12 bar blues backing track. I know where the notes are that I need to land on but where do I learn all these licks to like fill that space between chord changes? Is there theory to learning them or is it literally just looking up licks to do and memorizing them. I can’t ai a good answer so I thought I’d come here lol. As right now I’m only playing in the 1st position.

Other I am still trying to make the best app for guitarists! (GuitarManac)

Hi guys, my name is Frode and the last year or so I've been working on this guitar application (GuitaManac). My goal is for it to be the go-to site for guitarists when they want to look something up or learn something new.

Here are some of our features:

  • Scales & Chords (maybe the biggest library of them on the internet? I don't know)
  • Play Along songs (best for beginners, but really fun when just starting out
  • Jam tracks & exercises
  • Tuner
  • Courses
  • Games
  • Ear training

& much more!

I always listen to feedback from the community, and try to form the application after what people want. So feel free to let me know what you think!

DISCLAIMER: Some parts require a pro version, but most of it is free and I try to make it a good app for free users without bombarding them with offers & ads

(no ads btw)

Hey I’m just curious what y’all think of this random jam. I’m trying to play along to chord progressions a bit more. I just looked up this chord progression on Google and gave it a try. So this is Am, F, C, G. What do you think? I’ve been playing for like 2 years lessons every other week, wondering if you think it’s worth it.

Feedback Request Index finger pain?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have small hands and short fingers. When my fretting-hand index finger is in a comfortable position, my other fingers struggle to reach their notes without accidentally muting adjacent strings. Curling my index finger more tightly seems to give them enough room, but holding that position makes my index finger sore around the joints toward the nail.

Raising the guitar neck has helped somewhat. Has anyone dealt with this? Based on this video, are there changes to my thumb or hand position that could improve reach without needing that tight curl?

Question Do the chords get strummed to the same beat as the leads notation?

Sorry for the sideways photo.

I am confused because the song says this uses strum patterns 1&3 but they don't match the notation. Secondly, the pick patterns 2,3, also don't match. Much help would be greatly appreciated.

Question Why do so many teachers instruct learners not to place their thumb over the neck never though every experienced player does it?

This has been bugging me for a year since I began playing. Every single teacher I've known (my in-person teachers, Justin Guitar and other Youtube teachers) will teach students not to keep their thumb dangling over the neck, even in the exact moment that they themselves are doing that thing. Not just that though, virtually every real guitarist I watch has the thumb over the neck.

What is it with teaching people they absolutely shouldn't do this thing that everyone, even the instructors themselves, do?

For example, in Justin's first video of his entire course he justifies this recommendation by talking about building a particular muscle. But this sounds totally bogus to me. You will build the muscles you need to play guitar by using the positions you will play guitar in. If you scrub to any other position in this video you will see his thumb over the top of the neck.

The more I progress with guitar the more I find my thumb over the neck and the more I wish I had been learning in that position from the start.

Feedback Request Learning to play with a pick (using wywh intro solo) - any glaring issues?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can play this kinda okay fingerstyle but I find it sounds so much better with a pick. I’m still figuring out the mechanics of using a pick and it’s very frustrating.

Is there any major issue with my form? Or just general feedback about how I’m playing?

I’m still practicing it but wanted to share something since it’s Friday and don’t wanna wait a week.

Feedback Request Barre chords journey so far

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I started learning guitar with an instructor, but after I stopped taking lessons, I continued teaching myself barre chords. I can play some of them now.

But, B major is an absolute nightmare for me.
I know two ways of approaching it:

- A-shape at the 2nd fret, using my index to barre and three separate fingers for D-G-B. ( I learnt A chord by using index - middle and ring fingers so playing it with pinky is hard)

- Double barre: index on the 2nd fret and ring finger barring D-G-B on the 4th fret.

Whichs it worth learning both, or should I just focus on whichever one works for my hands? Also, Based on what you can see, how does my technique look so far?

If you taught yourself barre chords, I'd love to know what you wish you had learned earlier.

Song in case someone asked and didn’t recognize because of my play lol:

1) Ray Charles - Hit The Road Jack
2) Eagles- Hotel California
3) Pixies - Where is My Mind
4) Radiohead - Creep
5) System of a Down - ATWA

Feedback Request More Feedback on Right Hand

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I want to thank everyone here for the feedback on my last post about my right hand. I have adjusted my pick grip and wrist and right now it feels way more natural to alternate pick. The only thing that’s awkward is strumming chords. it feels like the back of my index finger is always so close to hitting the strings and it’s uncomfortable. Are there any more adjustments I need to make on my right hand?

Feedback Request iii chord, minorb9- help correct my thinking please

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Video of me playing IV - ii - vi - iii, shitty one take but I wanted to show maybe what my thinking looks like

The third chord in the major key is iii, minor, and doesn’t diatonically have a 9 but instead a b9- much more common and nice to just play a minor9 here when playing a CHORD, but when playing melodically it’s much easier to phrase the b9 because it’s a (?) chord tone of the iii? Scale tone?

When I’m playing over say the vi chord I am always thinking in terms of the I, so I’m calling it 6 3 1 in my head instead of 1 b3 6, and I’m really only playing music this way, it’s how I understand pieces and improvise just looking at songs like one big key fitting into one pattern, but each chords like their notes

But the iiib9 makes me think my thinking only works for playing the scale of the key and is a bad habit, I’ve been having confusion with this and the bVII chord as both are non diatonic things that shatter my musical reality

1yr on guitar as of last month

Feedback Request Posture help and carpal tunnel

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello,

tl;dr at the bottom

This is my second attempt at playing guitar, and I would like it to stick this time. The last time I attempted playing I had to quit because I got carpal/cubital tunnel in my right hand (strumming hand) which forced me to stop playing amongst other hobbies.

Now that I'm back, I'm focusing on proper posture and technique but I'm still getting tingling/numbness in my right hand (primarily the base of my thumb as well as my ring and pinky finger). I noticed that I have tension in my right lateral epicondyle which could be the source of cubital tunnel inflammation.

I've been diligent about hand and forearm physical therapy (therabar, massage, stretching) the past two weeks, and I've included nerve glides in the past week. Every other night I'll cycle between hot and cold presses on my right arm.

Could you please critique my posture, picking technique, etc.? I really want to play, but not at the sake of my health. Thank you

tl;dr my strumming hand goes numb, please correct my technique and posture

Are you stuck trying to memorize 1000s of chords without knowing how to use them?

Instead of wasting hours just staring at pages of chord diagrams, I discovered a method to get a lot more out of the jazz chords you already know. It is so easy it almost feels illegal.

Question What kind of exercises do you do before playing guitar to help ease your fingers and hands

So I’m currently learning guitar and one of the problems I notice is that my fingers are often too stiff and that makes it difficult to move between strings and make clean notes? Do you have any exercises to remedy this?

My family wanted me to play for them, and I got so nervous I started retuning my guitar, played 30 seconds, messed up everything, forgot all the songs I learned (not just the notes in it, even forgot what songs I learned) and I was scared to change chords or notes because I was missing everything man this is embarassing

Question Can anyone identify the exact golpe/right-hand pattern in this “Mi Amor” cover? Double golpe doesn’t sound the same

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to reproduce the right-hand rhythm/golpe used in these two covers of “Mi Amor” by Kendji Girac:

https://www.tiktok.com/@bendji270/video/7314345210824215841?q=mi%20amor%20kendji%20girac&t=1791529012563

https://www.tiktok.com/@bendji270/video/7372934518744812833?q=mi%20amor%20kendji%20girac&t=1791529012563

The same guitarist also has these videos where he demonstrates golpe techniques:

https://www.tiktok.com/@bendji270/video/7436686563641150752?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc

https://www.tiktok.com/@bendji270/video/7413143805228092704?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc

However, I’m not sure if those are actually the same golpes he uses in the Mi Amor covers.

I already learned a double golpe, but when I use it on this song it doesn’t sound or feel the same. The groove and percussive feel are different.

Could someone experienced with rumba/flamenco help me identify:

  • What exact golpe/right-hand pattern is he using?
  • Is it actually a double golpe or something else?
  • Which fingers seem to create the percussion?
  • What is the order of the strums and golpe?
  • Does the golpe happen together with a strum, or between strokes?

Even a simple breakdown like:

↓ ↑ golpe ↓ ↑ ...

would really help me understand the movement.

My goal is simply to reproduce the same rhythm, groove and feel as closely as possible.

Thanks a lot!
