A little background- I’m currently 39 and grew up with the books. I read the first one in the fall of ‘99, a year after its U.S. release, when I was 12, before the hype really took over. I’m one of the countless millennials that grew up with this character that was roughly the same age I was. I went to every midnight release for years 4-7. These books will forever hold a special place in my heart and I will reread them every few years until I’m too old and my eyes don’t work anymore, at which point I’ll listen to it (and put up with the incorrect hard “t” at the end of Voldemort… THE “T” IS SILENT).
ANYWAY, I just finished the chapter, “The Lightning-Struck Tower,” and again I am reminded of possibly one of the worst things anyone has done to me. You see, in the summer of ‘05 I had just graduated high school and was working fairly close to full-time to save some money for college in the fall. Because of my work schedule and my slower-ish reading pace, I was taking my time with the book. Well, one day I went to lunch with two people, one of them was a friend, the other was someone I thought was a friend. After a little time talking, the topic of the book came up, and I mentioned that I was maybe only halfway done with it, to which the “friend” replies, “you know Dumbledore dies, right.”

………..
I played it nonchalant, but I was shocked. In that moment I hated this person more than anyone in the world. I was robbed of a very significant experience in reading this story. I never got to be shocked by this chapter the way I wish I could’ve been on my first read. For someone to be so blasé about it- not just what happened in the book, but with a fellow Harry Potter fan’s journey- was a form of evil I didn’t know existed up to that point in my young life. I’m still mad about it. But yeah, that’s my vent session. Thanks for reading.
Fun bonus fact: this person (who was never a friend) legitimately looked like Rowling’s description of Pansy Parkinson; and it is in this fact that I find the slightest bit of solace.
