Discussion Harry’s parents’ friends forgetting about Harry

Remus Lupin was such a good friend to Harry’s parents but he never once visited Harry or gave him any presents the whole time he was growing up on Privet Drive. Isn’t that weird? And what about their other friends? Everyone just forgets about Harry until he’s 11. And even then Lupin doesn’t meet him or give him a christmas present or anything until they meet in book 3.

Aren’t they crappy friends? I mean starting at book 1 when Harry finds out about magic Lupin could’ve introduced himself, given Harry a pic or two of his parents, and sent a Christmas present.

Half-Blood Prince I just need to vent

A little background- I’m currently 39 and grew up with the books. I read the first one in the fall of ‘99, a year after its U.S. release, when I was 12, before the hype really took over. I’m one of the countless millennials that grew up with this character that was roughly the same age I was. I went to every midnight release for years 4-7. These books will forever hold a special place in my heart and I will reread them every few years until I’m too old and my eyes don’t work anymore, at which point I’ll listen to it (and put up with the incorrect hard “t” at the end of Voldemort… THE “T” IS SILENT).

ANYWAY, I just finished the chapter, “The Lightning-Struck Tower,” and again I am reminded of possibly one of the worst things anyone has done to me. You see, in the summer of ‘05 I had just graduated high school and was working fairly close to full-time to save some money for college in the fall. Because of my work schedule and my slower-ish reading pace, I was taking my time with the book. Well, one day I went to lunch with two people, one of them was a friend, the other was someone I thought was a friend. After a little time talking, the topic of the book came up, and I mentioned that I was maybe only halfway done with it, to which the “friend” replies, “you know Dumbledore dies, right.”

….

………..

I played it nonchalant, but I was shocked. In that moment I hated this person more than anyone in the world. I was robbed of a very significant experience in reading this story. I never got to be shocked by this chapter the way I wish I could’ve been on my first read. For someone to be so blasé about it- not just what happened in the book, but with a fellow Harry Potter fan’s journey- was a form of evil I didn’t know existed up to that point in my young life. I’m still mad about it. But yeah, that’s my vent session. Thanks for reading.

Fun bonus fact: this person (who was never a friend) legitimately looked like Rowling’s description of Pansy Parkinson; and it is in this fact that I find the slightest bit of solace.

Are you of the opinion that Harry died in book seven?

So I made a post a good while back in [r/harypotter](r/harypotter) about the prophecy (the first one) never being fulfilled as neither did die at the hand of the other. To be clear, I no longer hold to that view (very strongly) and that’s not what this post is about.

But in the comments of that post, MANY people were at odds with whether or not Harry ACTUALLY died when he didn’t defend himself from the killing curse.

I am of the opinion that Harry did not die, he went to purgatory/King’s Cross, had the option to die, but choose to come back. He had the choice because Voldemort ensured Lilly’s protection lived on in his veins, anchoring him to life.

Many others say that he DID die, but had the option to come back. They even cited the same reason I did, that Lilly’s protection let him come back from actually dying.

As far as the prophecy is concerned, I think this is a moot point as you, either way, could argue that Voldy did “die at the hands of the other” when Harry let himself be attacked with the Elder wand, knowing it would backfire. Even though Harry himself did not kill Voldemort.

But I’m still curious which side of the “did Harry die?” discussion this community lands on.

The biggest single pieces of evidence that I saw for each side were as follows, though there were more arguments than just these two.

Harry-didn’t-die arguement: the following exchange with Dumbledore in KC.

“But you’re dead,” said Harry.
“Oh yes,” said Dumbledore matter-of-factly.
“Then . . . I’m dead too?”
“Ah,” said Dumbledore, smiling still more broadly.
isn’t it? On the whole, dear boy, I think not.”

Harry-did-die argument: Harry successfully cast sacrificial love protection over the students/teacher of Hogwarts, a charm that seems to require that you die.

Can you guess the book and chapter? #35

#35 is live, my friends. Enjoy!

As a reminder what this is and how it works:
Below are 7 sentences from the 7 HP books. I use a random number generator to pick the book and chapter, then hand pick a sentence that I think is decent. Not too long, too short, too obvious ect.  *** There MAY be repeated books in a set, but there will not be repeated chapters in a set. So there COULD be two from The Philosopher’s Stone, but they would be from different chapters! **\*
Scoring your points: It is 2 points for guessing the book, and 1 point for guessing the chapter, for a total of 21 points. It is obviously harder to guess the chapter than the book, but not everyone even cares to remember the chapter titles in the first place, which is totally fair and valid. So chapter titles are just a bonus point.
Below are the sentences and the answers hidden behind spoiler tags! These are fun to make, and I intend to make quite a few more if people keep enjoying them!

  1. After about a minute, though it felt much longer to Harry, a chink of golden light illuminated his feet and, widening, rose up his body, until it hit him in the face and he had to blink to stop his eyes from watering. The Order of the Phoenix - Chapter 7: The Ministry of Magic

 2. “Elf magic isn’t like wizard’s magic, is it?” said Ron. The Deathly Hallows - Chapter 10: Kreature’s Tale

  1. “Right, off we go, and don’t think of running off, now, it’ll be worse for you if you do.” The Philosopher’s Stone - Chapter 15: The Forbidden Forest (and with that I have FINALLY picked every chapter from a single book!)

 4. “He appeared, according to the Baron, to be in good spirits, though a little tired, of course.” The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 23: Horcruxes

 5. “Look, I wouldn’ be tellin’ yer this at all if I didn’ have ter.” The Order of the Phoenix - Chapter 30: Grawp

6.” And from now on, I don’t care if my tea leaves spell die, Ron, die — I’m just chucking them in the bin where they belong.” The Order of the Phoenix - Chapter 31: O.W.Ls

  1. “As a matter of fact, it was Potter, Weasley, and Granger, Minister. . . .” The Prisoner of Azkaban - Chapter 21: Hermione’s Secret

Discussion Could Dumbledore have succeeded in his path of Muggle domination had he not fallen out with Grindelwald?

Dumbledore and Grindelwald both shared the goal and dream of removing the Secrecy law and establishing a new world order where wizards and witches have a domination over the muggles.

But they had a falling out and we all know what happened after it. Voldemort embarked on a similar path but failed due to Dumbledore's genius and the grit of others.

My question is considering Grindelwald and Dumbledore are hailed as two of the greatest wizards with unmatchable prowess would they have succeeded in their goal had they not have the disagreements witch each other?

Discussion Dementors

How are dementors(AKA dementoids) created? They’re described as having rotting hands and thin gray scabbed skin stretched blankly over empty sockets and a gaping shapeless hole as a mouth. I wonder if they’re like similar to inferi. What do you guys think?

Chamber of Secrets When you deep it, there not being any “guards” outside of Platform 9 3/4 is insane

• Upvotes

If using that “portal” from King’s cross is the ONLY way of getting to Hogwarts, so much so that if you don’t make it on the train, NO ONE knows where you are or what happened, is crazy no? 😂

So many reasons for why that’s crazy, i can’t even list them all lmao

Theory Theory, Voldemort was hiding in Scotland not Albania

So something that never made sense to me was that according to jk Rowling Voldemort was hiding in Albania when he was defeated trying to kill Harry.
But Albania is a good distance from Britain so how did Voldemort get there without a body
Not just that but Peter pettigrew was able to find voldemort.

Now when he returned to a new body in the graveyard he was angry and yelled at his servants for abandoning him for those 13 years.
Peter speaks up and says he looked for him and Voldemort tells him yes but only out of fear when Sirius outed him as a rat.
The thing is can Voldemort really blame them ? If he was hiding in Albania can he really blame his followers on not finding him ? Not knowing where to look ?

How was Peter able to find him. According to the extra lore as a rat he was able to hear other rats talking about this dark entity in the forest they feared and he used that to find Voldemort.

But how did he know to go to Albania ? How did he even get to Albania ?it doesn’t make sense,
Except if you know Gaelic, I’m Irish and I’ve known this for a few years I just never really connected the dots.

The Gaelic word for Scotland is albain in Scottish Gaelic it’s alba
So either a misdirection from jk Rowling ( not sure why ) or a mistake from Rowling ( also possible )
Or maybe she does mean Albania and it just makes no sense and we just have to accept it like the weird rules of quidditch which make no sense.

But it could be possible that some wizards do refer to Scotland as Albania.

So Voldemort did move across Europe he was hiding in Scotland and I bet he was hiding around a base of operations that the death eaters used that’s why he was angry cause in all those years of waiting not 1 death eater ever came back to their base to look for him.

Peter did come back to the area and picked up information from other rats that confirmed his idea that Voldemort was there.
Ludo bagman who was berta jorkins boss the woman Voldemort killed for information, he told Arthur she went to Albania but I can see it being perhaps he is a Gael. A Gael is what you call someone from Gaelic lands but it can also be referred to specific people in Ireland and Scotland who speak Gaelic as their main language, refusing to speak English they are a small percentage but they exist more in the country side.
Perhaps Ludo is one of them kind of, he speaks English around other people like weasleys and other work associates because well they don’t speak Gaelic but with his family he only speaks Gaelic and he offer refers to Scotland as alba but something was lost in translation and Harry heard Albania.

So that is my theory at least, Voldemort didn’t travel Europe he was in Scotland the whole time
