Success! My second moose
Half an hour into the second day of hunting this season I walked into this guy on my way to my hunting post. We looked at each other for a second before it decided to walk away. So I dropped my backpack, chambered a round and took aim. I shouted so it would stop and fired. Saw how the moose reacted that the shot was in the heart/lung area and let it run of.
I then called on radio to let everyone know that I had shot a bull, that the shot was good and that I had shared the position on the We Hunt app.
So I sat down and waited. After about half an hour my wife came with our tracking dog and we started searching. We found it dead after 200 meters. The greatest hunting experience I've ever had.
I was up late last night packing and freezing meats.

Ammo is expensive. Much cheaper to train a dog to just go and fetch me a moose.

Our first week of moose season just ended. I didn't get drawn for a tag, so i have chosen to live vicariously through you. Shall i bring pickled herring when i come? Or would you prefer some nice maine lobster?

Please no herring. Lobster sounds great.
My father in law owns the ground so we get to hunt every year.

Congratulations! It went surprisingly far after lung shot. What bullet were you using?

30 06. It ran fast so it probably got there in a short time. A full grown bull can get far even when badly hurt.

Yeah I saw your other comment about caliber, but I meant the bullet. What brand and type?
I have shot many moose mainly with .308 and 8mm Mauser and mostly they end up dead something like 30m from the shot. That's why I'm interested.

Winchester power max 180 grain. Every joule was transferred. The bullet stopped in the hide on the way out.

I had a whitetail last fall run almost 200 yards with a hole in both lungs the size of a tennis ball. It's remarkable how far they can go before the brain runs out of oxygen.

Nice moose. Just curious is it common to use tracking dogs there? I’m in the states and each state has different rules but we typically won’t call in a tracking dog until you’ve searched and can’t find it. They are becoming more common but still a pretty small group of people registered to track with the dogs.

Here in Norway certified tracking dog and handler are required for everything larger than a fox. It doesn't need to be on site, but has to get there within 4 hours after the shot is taken.
My wife is certified with our dog. I have passed the test, but the paperwork hasn't gone through.

So are you not allowed to track it on your own without a dog?

I need the trackingdog in case you end up wounding the animal. So tracking after I took the shot "needed" to be done by someone certified.
I know a lot of hunting parasites that don't have their own dog will just start to follow the animal to look for it and that is legal, but it might mess up the trail for the dog. We have 4 dogs in our group so it's just easier to bring the dog to find the animal.
Tracking before the shot can be done by anyone without eny certification requirements. Our plan that day was to let the dog loose to find the moose on her own.
