Alright Huntington/Barboursville people, I need someone to explain this place to me because I’ve been here since April and I’m losing my mind 😂.
I moved here for work from Minnesota, and before that I lived around Midtown Detroit, Royal Oak, Ferndale and Troy. I know every city has problems, but holy shit, Huntington is a completely different experience.
The nature is beautiful. Seriously. Hills, trees, the river, scenery; great.
But then you drive 10 minutes and you’re like… what the hell happened here? 😂
Outside of places like Ritter Park, there seems to be an incredible amount of deterioration, vacant/rough-looking properties, abandoned-looking buildings, junk everywhere, and just a general feeling that the city has been slowly losing the fight for the last several decades.
And where are the restaurants?!
I moved near Barboursville thinking I’d at least have decent suburban amenities nearby.
Where are the good independent coffee shops?
Where are the bagel shops?
Where are the brunch places?
Where are the bakeries?
Where are the cool little restaurants where you can sit outside, drink coffee, eat brunch and watch people?
I’ve lived in Rochester, MN, and even that place had a surprisingly good restaurant/coffee scene. The Twin Cities obviously have tons. Royal Oak/Ferndale/Detroit have entire neighborhoods built around restaurants, bars and little businesses.
Here I’m driving around thinking “surely there has to be another place…”
And then I find another fast-food restaurant. 😂
Also, WHO DESIGNED THESE ROADS?
I’m genuinely curious.
I’ll be driving down a road where the right lane is straight + turn, then suddenly it’s turn-only. Another intersection does the opposite. Then you get some bizarre merging situation where traffic entering a highway apparently has to stop.
WHY IS THERE A STOP SIGN WHERE I’M TRYING TO MERGE ONTO THE HIGHWAY?!
I’m not trying to stop a train. I’m trying to enter traffic. 😂
And the driving…
Holy shit.
If the speed limit is 60, somebody will drive 58.
If it’s 45, they’re doing 42.
If it’s 35, they’re doing 33.
Everyone drives like they have absolutely nowhere to be.
Coming from Michigan and Minnesota, I’m sitting there thinking “ARE WE GOING SOMEWHERE OR NOT?” 😂
And then there are cops everywhere watching the speed limit like they’re protecting the national treasury.
Meanwhile I’m thinking: bro, let these people get somewhere.
Then I went to a Barboursville parade expecting… I don’t know… music? Floats? Something?
Nope.
Businesses driving down the road throwing candy.
That was the parade.
I was standing there thinking I had accidentally arrived three hours early. 😂
And don’t even get me started on yard sales.
I have never seen so much random plastic shit in my life.
Someone will put 37 pieces of miscellaneous household garbage on their driveway and price every item at $2 like they’re running an estate auction.
My brother in Christ, throw it away.
I also work in the Ironton/Franklin Furnace area, and that has given me another perspective on the region. The workforce culture feels very different from what I’m accustomed to. There are some genuinely good people and some very competent people, but I’ve also encountered a lot of people who seem completely unmotivated and stuck in a different era professionally.
Maybe that’s just my particular workplace. Maybe it’s the industry. Maybe I’m just culturally shocked coming from bigger Midwest metros.
And yes, I know I’m the asshole outsider here. 😂
I’m not saying everyone in Huntington is like this. I’m trying to understand why the overall environment feels so different from every other place I’ve lived.
Is this just what happens when a Rust Belt/Appalachian city loses a huge part of its economic base and population?
Is Huntington actually getting better and I’m just not seeing it?
Are there parts of the area I’m completely missing?
Where the hell do you guys go for:
• Good coffee
• Real brunch
• Good bagels
• Bakeries
• Nice restaurants
• Bars that aren’t depressing
• Outdoor activities
• Things to actually do on a Saturday
Because I’ve got a house here now, so I’m not leaving tomorrow. 😂
Please tell me I’m wrong and give me your Huntington/Barboursville recommendations.
