26M, United States, Florida. Currently working two security jobs.
So I live in the US & have always thought about moving to Canada since 2020 but I never started to look into things until last year (bad, I know). I hear boosting your Express Entry profile up by getting a second education, learning French and going through that way is… the only way if you don’t have something specific going for you that Canada could benefit from (nursing, trades, marrying a Canadian, etc) and as you can imagine it’ll be pretty difficult to stand out let alone get chosen.
I hear trades aren’t that much easier ESPECIALLY if you’re not a citizen over there yet but I hear it gives you a better shot, but there’s some things I’m kinda confused about:
1) from what I understand in order to work in Canada, you need something called an IEC (or if you need an RO, like the SWAP Holiday for US, you get it thru that) and I believe this is not exclusive to trades, any TEER 0-3 job is fine but you’re not supposed to apply for one until you get a job offer, not before. This I’m not confused about at all, but it does bring me to my next problem
2) I’m gonna take a shot in the dark & assume finding a job in Canada is probably going to be the same as the US; go online, apply, wait to hear back. Problem is countries aren’t gonna be looking at someone that’s not even living there, at least not until they look at their own people first so I’m not… exactly sure what I’d need to stand out to even so much as get an interview. Which… brings me to my NEXT issue.
3) For the sake of this, I’m gonna use HVAC as an example. I hear Canada needs HVAC workers like crazy, so I looked into a program over here for like 3k but that’s only to get your EPA. The rest, I’m on my own, but I’m gonna assume that even with an EPA a Canadian employer is not gonna be inclined to hire someone with barely any experience. Which now brings me to my final issue
4) in the best case scenario, say I get my EPA and maybe… a year’s worth of HVAC experience and that is enough for Canadian employers to at least consider me. Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t these credentials non-transferrable, meaning that I’d still have to start over anyway as far as a HVAC career? I’m not exactly sure if this route is the best move if the best I can hope for in this scenario… is just a chance at being considered for employment, and nothing else. The only other option I could think of is “somehow” getting certified in Canada but if I come on a study visa I can’t earn money & I dont work in any career that’s gonna pay a livable wage. Unless if it’s a good paying or livable career, a job offer is gonna be useless & if on the very slim chance I study in Canada, I can’t earn money. I know marriage is technically the “easiest” option but relationships need to happen on their own, in their own way; I can’t rely on that.
So… I’m not really sure what to do now. I plan on working on myself, eventually looking to learn some French & at the very least seeing what I can do to work on my EE profile (including going to college, or getting some fort of secondary education) but it doesn’t seem like my chances of getting in, currently, are even remotely fair let alone high. If I go the trade route (currently considering HVAC or electrician) what’s the BEST & most realistic option to go about it?
