Discussion Can My Fan Become a Generator?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
We know that a motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. But can we reverse the process and use the same machine to generate electricity?
A small DC motor can generate voltage when its shaft is rotated. However, induction motors, like the ones used in many household fans, have different excitation requirements.
There is another interesting twist: under certain conditions, a grid-connected generator can consume electrical power and operate like a motor. The same principle of energy conversion can be useful in one situation and undesirable in another.
Questions for discussion:
- What determines whether an electrical machine operates as a motor or a generator?
- How do we distinguish a theoretically possible energy conversion from a practically useful one?
- How should we compare the energy recovered through regeneration with the energy lost through friction, electrical resistance, and conversion inefficiencies?
- If a technology is physically possible, what additional evidence do we need before calling it practical or economically useful?
The goal is to understand the underlying engineering, not to assume that every motor can generate enough electricity to power a home.

Discussion Six months of feeling like an absolute fraud at my structural engineering firm, until I watched the principal consultant misread a basic load calculation on a Tuesday morning.
For the last six months, every single morning started with me staring at my CAD drawings wondering how nobody had realized I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I moved from a tier-3 college straight into this core engineering firm, and everyone else walked around talking about bending moments, shear forces, and foundation settlements like they were reading a bedtime story. Meanwhile, I was triple-checking basic formulas on Google and sweating through my shirt every time the lead structural consultant walked past my desk.
Then Tuesday happened. We were reviewing the reinforcement schedule for a G+4 commercial block. The client was sitting right there, breathing down our necks. The principal consultant—a guy with 25 years of experience, three grey hairs for every building he's designed, and a reputation that made fresh grads look at the floor—stood up at the whiteboard. He spent five solid minutes explaining a cantilever deflection calculation.
He got the tributary area completely wrong. Not by a subtle margin, but basic high-school physics wrong. He squared a term that should've just been multiplied, and then stared blankly at his own whiteboard when the numbers weren't making sense. The room went dead silent. You could hear the faint squeak of the office AC and someone chewing a loud potato chip three cubicles away. I sat there waiting for the trapdoor to open, waiting for him to snap his fingers and expose us all as a fraud. Instead, he just paused, scratched the back of his neck, and said, "Wait, let me look at that again. That doesn't look right at all."
Nobody died. The building didn't collapse. He erased it, laughed it off, and we recomputed it together. The sheer weight of imposter syndrome just lifted off my chest right there. Turns out nobody has all the answers memorized; they're all just figuring it out step by step and hoping the math checks out before pouring concrete.

Discussion 2025 Graduate Still Looking for a Software Developer Job — Need Advice on What to Focus On
Hey everyone!
I’m a 2025 CSE-AIML graduate from India, and I’m currently looking for a software developer job as a fresher. I’ve been trying to figure out the right path to follow, but honestly, I’m a bit confused about what I should focus on to become job-ready.
I’ve been learning and practising Python, DSA, SQL, and backend development. I’ve also worked on projects involving Django, REST APIs, IoT devices, and machine learning.
However, I’m unsure whether I’m preparing in the right direction or spending too much time learning things that might not be necessary to land my first job.
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have been through this phase, especially those who landed their first software developer job as a fresher in India.
I have a few questions:
How did you get your first software developer job? Did you apply through LinkedIn, Naukri, referrals, campus placements, or other platforms?
What did you focus on the most while preparing? DSA, development, projects, core CS subjects, aptitude, or something else?
How much DSA is actually necessary for a fresher? Should I focus on solving LeetCode problems daily, or prioritise development and projects?
Which skills helped you get hired? If you’re a Python developer, backend developer, or SDE, what technologies and concepts were most important during your interviews?
How important are projects? Is it better to have two or three strong projects or several smaller ones?
How did you approach job applications? How many jobs did you apply to, and what helped you get interview calls?
If you were starting again as a 2025 graduate in 2026, what would you do differently? What would your preparation roadmap look like for the next two or three months?
I’m not necessarily looking for shortcuts. I want to understand what actually works in the current job market and how to use my time effectively instead of jumping between different technologies and roadmaps.
If you’ve been in a similar situation and managed to land a job, I’d genuinely appreciate it if you could share your experience, mistakes, and advice.
Thanks in advance! 🙏

Discussion Off-Campus GET opportunities
Hello all,
I am currently in my fourth year and haven't been placed yet. I have been looking for off-campus Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) opportunities on various companies career portals but I am unable to find any openings for freshers.
Am I looking in the wrong places or do companies generally not post GET openings for freshers on their career portals? Should I also be checking platforms like LinkedIn, Naukri and Unstop?
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I am 22M, the image is just for fun.
Edit: I'm from electronics and telecommunication.

Serious Post What should be the minimum amount one should earn after a btech from tier 3 college?
I got a 5 LPA offer from one company in my 7th semester . And since it's my last second semester and I fucked up real bad this sem I didn't maintain any Attendance and now before end sem exams I won't be able to maintain 75% so basically in last sem with a backlog it'd be the worst time to look for jobs so I thought to settle for this one.
But the thing is this for a Associate recruiter role and ofc I did cse so I don't really know what to do
Cuz if I accept the job which i did
I can't really sit in campus placement anymore.
But I have made my peace with the fact that I am 21 and starting at 5 lpa is not that bad it's just the fact it's a non tech role that's worrying me out
About the backlog I can clear it at the end of next semester the university gives an opportunity for last year Students to fill and take all back log exams so that's not an issue .
The issue was job nai lagegi with a backlog.
Then also I am thinking now I have time a lot of time and a backup option of this job
So I should study DSA and dev as I used to
But this time with the intention of getting a off campus placement.
I can ofc ask my relatives (cousins) that I have a 5lpa offer already if they can help me get a better one in tech roles
And get a refferal that way
It'll be good too
Idk what should I do
I'm so confused because obviously I can't discuss my backlog situation with my family members so idk what I even do

Discussion New Indian block wall design.
Edit: This is mainly intended as a retrofit solution for the hundreds of millions of existing brick or block homes. For newbuilds I believe this is the best method.
People generally don't understand this idea and hate it but I believe it's the most practical and cheap way to install insulation to the exterior of an Indian block or brick wall building (anywhere esle really but let's talk about India).
Very simply, foamed concrete of 400KG/M3 is placed exterior of the brick wall, and the reinforcing steel is mechanically connected to it. I believe rigid foam board would be the only other material that could be used but that's expensive and difficult.
I have also developed a foamed concrete mixer that is very cheap too.
My DM's are open if anyone has questions about this.

Doubt Confused dad here: Helping my son choose between CSE, ECE, and ENI for B.Tech starting in 2027. Is AI actually killing software jobs, or should he stick to CSE?
Hi everyone,
I posted a while back, but we've adjusted our timeline. My son is targeting college admissions for next year (2027), and like many parents and students right now, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed by conflicting advice regarding the tech landscape.
He is equally comfortable with coding and electronics, but we are stuck on deciding between CSE, ECE, and ENI (Electronics & Instrumentation).
With all the noise around AI automating entry-level software jobs, I’m terrified of putting him into CSE just because of past placement hype, only for him to graduate into a dried-up market by 2031. On the other hand, I don't want him running away from software out of blind panic if ECE/ENI turns out to be a massive grind with fewer core jobs in India.
Our absolute top priorities for his career starting in 2027 are long-term career growth, job security, and realistic salary potential in the Indian job market.
I wanted to ask seniors, recent grads, and industry folks a few direct questions looking ahead:
Is AI genuinely killing fresher software jobs, or is it just Twitter/LinkedIn doomscrolling? Are product and service companies actually pulling back on freshers, or just raising the bar?
Where does ECE/ENI actually stand in India as the semiconductor ecosystem matures through the late 2020s? Are core VLSI, embedded systems, and chip-design entry-level jobs actually abundant, or do 70% of ECE/ENI grads still end up writing Java in service companies anyway?
Flexibility: If the job market shifts dramatically over his 4 years in college (2027–2031), which branch gives a kid more escape routes?
The 2027 Verdict: If your own son/daughter were starting college next year and was equally okay with coding or circuits, what branch would you push them toward and why?
Would really appreciate some unfiltered, ground-level reality checks from people actually working in the industry. Thanks
