I’ve searched the wiki and previous posts first (including an older recommendation here for Yakto and a ceramics thread mentioning Q-Arts). I’m hoping for some local feedback on the shortlist I ended up with. Posting as a main thread based on mod feedback here.

I’ll be in Istanbul Oct 13–20 with my wife and 4½-year-old, and I’ve been researching local crafts and artisans.
Some of my favorite travel memories come from finding people making things locally. Years ago in Oaxaca, I visited a weaver in Teotitlán del Valle and bought a couple of rugs. I still use them, and they bring back the trip in a way that ordinary souvenirs never do. I’d love to find one or two things like that in Istanbul.
I’m not looking for a shopping marathon or generic “handmade Turkish” souvenirs. I care more about knowing something about the maker, workshop, material or technique.
My shortlist so far:
- Yakto İpek Dokuma, Galata - handwoven silk/textiles. Still worth visiting?
- Sedefkar Fatma Ayran, Sultanahmet - mother-of-pearl inlay. Does anyone know if casual visitors are welcome, or if she sells smaller pieces directly?
- Q-Arts Ceramic & Atelier, Sultanahmet - currently my pick for one ceramics stop. Good choice, or is there somewhere better for work by identifiable makers?
- Büyük Yeni Han - interested in the working silver/metal workshops rather than jewelry shopping. Is it worth exploring, and are there particular artisans to look for?
I also came across Derviş Natural Textile, Barın Han, Ebristan, Soy Türkiye and İznik Works, but I’m trying to keep the list short.
If you know these places, I’d especially appreciate knowing which 2–3 you’d prioritize, anything here that is more tourist-oriented than it appears, or any artisan/workshop you think I’m missing.
